The relationship between mineral resource reporting, shareholder value and investor confidenceBosman, Liaan January 2013 (has links)
Mineral resources are the most important asset of a mining company and form the basis of its economic value. The communication of mineral resource estimates is essential for investors to make informed decisions. International reporting standards have been developed to improve the governance of mineral resources and to ensure that the information is communicated in such a way that it could be understood by interested stakeholders. In spite of this, many users still do not fully understand its potential impact on shareholder value and investor confidence. The basis of this study was to explore the relationship between mineral resource reporting, shareholder value and investor confidence.
This study was exploratory in nature and followed a quantitative research design. It was conducted on data from mining companies listed in Australia, Canada, England and South Africa. The time period selected was after the perceived end of the global financial crisis. Multiple linear regression and independent t-test analyses were employed to explore the relationship between mineral resource reporting, shareholder value and investor confidence.
This study found a significant relationship between mineral resource reporting and shareholder value for gold, non-gold and small-cap companies. The results further revealed a significant relationship between mineral resource reporting and investor confidence for large-cap companies. It further confirmed that mineral resource reporting is value relevant and found that the information contained therein is not consistently interpreted when compared to published research. Behavioral portfolio models and their implications in Investors' behaviors.January 2013 (has links)

However, this relevance is still in its early stage in the context of investment decision, especially in the context of dynamic portfolio selection. While the standard preference structure in Expected Utility Theory (EUT) leads to a tractable concave maximization formulation, the new psychological features of Kahneman and Tversky's Prospect Theory (PT), which is frequently applied in behavioral finance, often make related dynamic investment models non-convex and time inconsistent in the sense of optimization, thus intractable in general. Consequently, it is still not easy for us to properly apply insights from behavioral finance in the area of portfolio selection. The goal of this thesis is to translate some remarkable psychological insights associated with P T into investment details by including them in standard dynamic portfolio selection models and then reflecting them in the derived optimal policy. / To achieve this goal, this thesis is composed of three studies on investor behaviors and portfolio models. In the first study, we formulate and investigate a general multi period behavioral portfolio selection model under PT, featuring an S-shaped value function. Unlike the classical expected utility maximization model, a behavioral portfolio model could be easily ill-posed (i.e., infinitely leveraging an asset is optimal for the investor), as He and Zhou [2011] already noticed in their single-period model. Hence, we first discuss the ill-posedness issue and identify the conditions for the well-posedness under a multi-period framework. To be more specific, we show that the well-posedness of a multi-period portfolio selection problem can be characterized in terms of an induced loss aversion measure. Under these well-posedness conditions, we then derive the semi-analytical optimal policy. In particular, for a market of one risky asset or a market of multiple risky assets which follow the elliptical distributions, the optimal behavioral portfolio policy takes a (piecewise) linear feedback form. In other words, the piecewise power utility function (S-shaped value function) is reflected in the derived optimal policy in the form of a piecewise linear feedback policy. As a byproduct, we also find that the induced loss aversion measures for individual time periods tend to increase as the terminal time approaches. This monotonicity property, which implies a changing risk attitude of a loss-averse investor during his investment periods, may shed light on the debate of horizon effect: whether or not a long horizon investor should allocate his wealth differently from a short horizon investor. / In the second study, we investigate the role of dynamic reference point to understand investors' behavior and describe their investment patterns in dynamic situations. In the framework of P T preference, we formulate the dynamics of the reference point by relating it to the way people perceive prior gains and losses, as suggested by Arkes et al [2008, 2010], and then derive a semi-analytical solution for a reference point adapted multi-period portfolio selection model, featuring a piecewise linear utility. Based on an optimal U-shape stock holding property predicted by our model, we further build a linkage between the asymmetric updating rule in reference point adaptation and the asymmetric trading behavior, i.e., the disposition effect. In other words, the asymmetric adaptation of the reference point is reflected in the derived optimal policy in the form of an asymmetric trading pattern. Our experiment also supports the proposed theoretical model. / Besides variation in the time dimension, there are good reasons to believe that the reference point should also change in the spatial dimension. As social animals, our choices and decisions are Inevitably Influenced by our friends and neighbors. In the third study, we address the social interaction process in which PT preferences are influenced by other market participants, e.g., the regular CRRA (Constant Relative Risk Averse) investors or other PT investors, and then study the long run wealth convergence of the two trading parties: one PT agent vs. one CRRA agent or both agents are of PT types. In the one PT agent vs. one CRRA agent model, the PT agent knows the CRRA agent's optimal terminal wealth and takes it as his reference point. If the PT agent also starts with a higher initial wealth level than that of the CRRA agent, he will always do better than the CRRA agent by imitating the CRRA agent's policy. On the other hand, if the PT agent starts with a lower wealth level than that of the CRRA agent, he can still do better than the CRRA agent by adopting a “gambling policy. When both trading parties are PT type investors, we consider two types of reference points: either both PT agents take their average wealth as their reference point or they are mutual reference dependent. Under both situations, we give sufficient conditions on the long run wealth convergence. Finally, we discuss the question: what is the best reference point for both PT agents when their initial wealth levels are given? We start with a simple gamble model and conclude with an unsatisfactory result: no equilibrium pair exists in some situations. The management gap : pooled resource governance and decision making within co-operative housingKruger, Abraham January 2015 (has links)
The aim of the research is to find relationships that explain co-operative housing
institutions through understanding the institution, management board and their decision
making preferences. In the process of achieving the explanatory relationship, an
analysis and overview of co-operative housing institutions is conducted with reference
to the individual board member’s understanding of the institution. Individuals are
reviewed in context of their contractual relationship within the management structure
using a principal-agent continuum conceptualized from agency theory. Individual board
members are subsequently required to make a practical decision based on their now
defined understanding of the co-operative institutional context. This decision records
individuals’ degree of self-interest behaviour as opposed to the institutional interest and
individuals’ responsibility of equitable distribution of common pooled resources.
Significant relationships were found to explain the degree of self-interest portrayed by
board members for the cooperative institution and a relationship construct was devised
to illustrate the various aspects. Recommendations were made to reduce the degree of
self-interest behaviour that board members portray in favour of behaviour that is within

The Role of Group Affective Tone in Shaping Outcomes of Team-Focused LeadershipUnknown Date (has links)
This dissertation presents an analytical framework based on the processes of social identification
and self-categorization as mechanisms through which team-focused leadership and group affective tone
separately and jointly contribute to team outcomes at both the team and team member levels A review of
relevant literature supported the development of the research hypotheses The hypotheses were tested using
multilevel structural equation modeling and single level path analysis to tease out significant effects of
team leadership and affective processes in teams
The results of single level path analyses demonstrated that leaders and team members contribute to
the affective tone of a team through the sharing of emotions and processes of emotional contagion and
norms of emotional expression via identification and self-categorization processes Both individual leaders
(vertical team-focused leadership) and team members sharing in leadership processes (shared team-focused
leadership) were found to distinctly contribute to group affective tone and the important team outcomes of
team performance, creativity, trust, team member engagement, team member identification, and team
member citizenship behaviors The results further demonstrated that the affective tone of a team (group
affective tone) has direct effects on team member outcomes, and mediates direct effects on outcomes of
team-focused leadership Group affective tone was found to mediate the effects of both vertical and shared
team-focused leadership on team member engagement, identification, citizenship behaviors, and team trust The results are relevant to both researchers interested in studying leadership and affective
processes in teams and to management practitioners interested in understanding contributions to team
effectiveness The consideration of both team-focused leadership and the affective tone of a team matter in
team effectiveness The emotional climate of a team appears to be important to team member outcomes
more so than team-level outcomes Therefore, what managers consider to be important indicators of team
effectiveness (either team-level or team member-level) determine the actions of a manager to monitor and
strengthen the positive affective tone of a team Limitations are discussed and future research directions are

contact between the minority culture and the majority culture.
Through urbanization, the black person is exposed to the Western culture by
means of integrated workplaces, schools and neighborhoods. During the
acculturation process, distinct changes occur within the individual on
interpersonal and intrapersonal levels. Self-actualization is a familiar
concept in the Humanistic paradigm and refers to the notion of living to
one's full potential in order to become the kind of individual one wants to
be. This research aims to investigate the impact of acculturation on the
level of self-actualization of black personnel practitioners.
A sample of 218 black personnel practitioners was used, consisting of an
equal number living in urban and rural areas.
The results of this introductory study indicated that urbanized black personnel practitioners show a higher level of self-actualization than
respondents residing in rural areas. / Akkulturasie verwys na 'n kultuurverandering as 'n uitvloeisel van
deurlopende en eerstehandse kontak tussen die minderheidskultuur en die
dominante kultuur. Deur verstedeliking word die swart persoon blootgestel
aan die Westerse kultuur, asook deur integrasie in die werkplek, skole en
woongebiede. Gedurende hierdie akkulturasieproses vind daar definitiewe
veranderinge plaas in individue op inter- en intrapersoonlike vlak. Selfaktualisering
is 'n bekende konsep in die Humanistiese paradigma en

The focus of this study was to determine if university student leaders’ cognitive and behavioral agility is related to organizational member commitment and if this relationship is moderated by alterable and non-alterable variables. The empirical results from this study are based on the responses of 37 student leaders who occupy leadership positions in organizations and clubs in their respective university. Cognitive agility was measured by the student leader’s use of systems thinking, reframing, and reflection. Student leader behavioral agility was assessed by a minimum of three organizational members rating the student leader’s use of leader influence actions (transforming, managing, bonding, bridging, and bartering) in carrying out their functions.
