This work is a contribution to studies of the abiotic nature in protected areas, motivated by the integrated management of natural tourist attractions and the sustainable development of local communities. In order to do so, it was based on the hypothesis that geoenvironmental mapping can characterize and qualitatively evaluate the geodiversity and associated natural heritage of a region, and generate contents appropriate to its interpretation. Alongside, a systematic inventory of the geodiversity sites was carried out, as well as a quantitative evaluation of their potential tourisic uses, in the categories of conventional and adventure turism, educational use, risk of degradation and potential scientific value. The northern region of São Sebastião Island, located in the city-archipelago of Ilhabela, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with an area of 164 km2, was defined as the study area. The choice of this area dues to its inclusion in the State Park of Ilhabela, its significant variability in terms of lithology, geological structures, types of relief and soil, and hydrological conditions, and the reasonable amount of previous information about of the physical environment available. Among the results obtained, the 1:20.000 scale geodiversity map contains characterized and integrated attributes analyzed for 12 units of geodiversity. Geodiversity sites with the greatest potential for the implementation of geoturistic projects were identified, in addition to those with a scientific value in terms of state relevance. From the volume of data generated, a proposal of interpretive material was made aimed at the promotion of geotourism in Ilhabela. Finally, it was concluded that the proposal of geoenvironmental mapping in the geoconservation strategy is adequate as its results optimize: (1) obtaining scientific content about the visited sites, (2) the definition of representative themes of local geodiversity, (3) the recognition of new sites with scientific value, not mentioned in the literature, (4) the assessment of geological processes which may put the sites at risk, and (5) the creation of a georeferenced database for the phases of interpretation and implementation of geotourism projects. / CNPq: 165800/2014-3 / CAPES: 165800/2014-3 / CAPES: 88881.134213/2016-01
