The construction and deconstruction of gender through sport reporting in selected South African newspapers

Serra, Pamela 27 October 2008 (has links)
M.Comm. / This study is strengthened by several studies that have suggested that the print media is biased towards male sports coverage at the expense of women’s sport. The study aimed to analyse and critically reflect upon the constructions of gender through sports reporting in selected regional (Gauteng) newspapers. Methods utilized to determine such constructions, included: i) a quantitative survey in terms of frequency of articles (text) and the scope of photographic images and, ii) a qualitative or content analysis in terms of text and photographic images in three regional newspapers (Die Beeld, The Star and The Sowetan) and interviews representing a spectrum of Gauteng’s readership. Data was collected over a 6-month period (1 April 2004 – 1 September 2004) to include all major sport events such as the Athens Olympic Games, the Athens Para-Olympic Games, Wimbledon, the European Soccer Championships, the Rothmans July Handicap, the Women’s African Soccer Cup and the Tri-Nations Rugby Series. A total of two thousand three hundred and fifty four (n=2354) images and five thousand three hundred (n=5300) articles were collected for analysis. The research design allowed for input, throughput and output analysis. To determine the rationale of the input and throughput phases, interviews were conducted with three (n=3) male journalists from the three regional newspapers. Quantitative analysis revealed that sport reporting was greatly biased towards men’s sport coverage (86.5%) compared to women’s sport coverage (13.5%). Qualitative comparisons revealed that male journalists generally devalued the athletic achievements of female athletes by using cultural stereotypes, trivialization and sexual innuendos. In comparison, the journalists often expressed their reverence for male athletes’ athleticism, reproducing and legitimizing hegemonic masculinity. The systematic documentation and critical analysis of gender construction in the media may inform journalists and sport editors of biased sport reporting and the reinforcement of sexual stereotypes. Activist groups may utilise this research to place this type of media construction on their advocacy agenda. / Prof. C. Burnett

The influence of the print media in portraying women in sport : a case study of The Independent on Saturday

Govender, Nereshnee January 2010 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Masters Degree of Technology: Public Relations Management, Durban University of Technology, 2010. / During the Apartheid era in South Africa, women were marginalised from sport. The ability to participate in sport in South Africa is intrinsically linked to the political history of the country. Sport played a dynamic role in the struggle against the diabolical system of apartheid in South Africa and has a powerful role to play in the transformation and nation building of South Africa. Women have made great strides in sport in recent years in South Africa and the way in which media portray these sporting achievements is critically important to dislodging negative stereotypes and overcoming discrimination of women in sport. The unfair coverage of women’s sport displays gender based attitudes which systematically disadvantage women’s position in society. Women’s participation in sport has grown dramatically but despite this growth coverage of women in sport remains inferior to that given to men in sport across all media. Media need to acknowledge, promote and celebrate the wealth of talent that there is to be enjoyed by society. Newspaper reports are seldom challenged for not being accurate or truthful. But readers have a right to truthful information and reporting, and being trustworthy to the reader is the basis of good journalism. Media need to collectively reflect a diversity of content to ensure public access to a variety of viewpoints and they should expect societal intervention if the media fail to meet professional standards. The print media has a fundamental role to play in shaping public opinion and undoubtedly have an influence in portraying women in sport in South Africa. This study critically analyses the influence of the print media in portraying women in sport.

Bueno, Noemi Corrêa. January 2018 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This thesis argued that although there is an evolution in feminist achievements, there are still segments that reproduce the androcentric structure, in this case, sports journalism. The objective was to analyze the visibility and participation of communication professionals (narrators, presenters and commentators) in Brazilian and Portuguese sports programs on TV, transmitted in November 2017 and in April / May 2017. In order to verify if there were differences in the number of female and male professionals in sports journalism and analyze the discursive constructions organized by these subjects. For this, the research was divided in 4 stages: historical contextualization; quantitative analysis regarding the number of male and female professionals in the functions of presentation, narration and commentary in sports journalism; and qualitative through analysis of postures, speeches, behaviors and relations of women journalists. From this, it was verified that in this field there is still a predominance of male professionals (women represent only 11.4% in Brazil and 6.3% in Portugal), and that the female minority still are presenter, and the men are commentator and narrator. In addition, interviews revealed that there are still difficulties to overcome such as: harassment, low opportunity for effective participation and aesthetic charges, underestimated skills and knowledge, rude treatment during interviews, violence in social networks, interruptions and difficulties in to reco... South African sport in the global media arena : tackling issues of globalisation and media control and their impact on the national interest

Ryan, Shaun Ross. January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation sets out to identify the national interest in terms of South African sport, as represented by the 2003 ICASA Position Paper and Regulations on Sports Broadcasting Rights. The dissertation focuses on South African rugby which, along with cricket and soccer, is one of the main sports deemed to be in the national interest. The government’s use of televised sport as a means of disseminating the ideology of nationalism amongst South Africans is explored. A critique of the national interest is provided with the importance of private, commercial broadcasters to the financial sustainability of sporting unions stressed. Commercial broadcasters are often the only broadcasters capable of acquiring sports broadcasting rights at international market related prices. Commercial broadcasters are, therefore, important to the longevity of professional sports and cannot be sidelined by related policies which could give preference to free-to-air broadcasters. The concept of ‘responsible broadcasting’ is introduced as a means of maintaining the national interest. Broadcasters, sporting unions and the public are imperative to the promotion of the national interest and are analysed further in this regard. The dissertation ends with a discussion of televised sports’ contribution towards efforts of nation-building within a South African context. This discussion establishes whether rugby events deemed to be in the national interest are readily accepted by South African audiences and warrant their inclusion in future ICASA policies. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2008.
