Multi-criteria Feasibility Assessment Of The Monorail Transportation System In Metu Campus

Tarighi, Amin 01 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The overall objective of this thesis is to assess the financial, technical and social feasibility of investing in modern Automated People Movers (APM) transportation systems, generally known as monorails, in METU campus which presents a unique opportunity to fulfill the modern-day transportation needs of METU campus. This study complements the Presidency Office&rsquo / s long term goal to integrate environmental, social and economic sustainability into the policies, practices and culture of the university and ultimately reduce the consumption of all resources on campus and traffic congestion and accidents. In this context, the consequent cost-benefit effects of the proposed monorail system on campus life were quantified in monetary expressions and the corresponding multi-criteria feasibility assessment including: Break-even Analysis, Cost Effectiveness Assessments and Cost Benefit Analysis have been done successfully. According to these analyses the overall capital cost of system is $46.5 million which covers the 24 months project construction period, and an additional annual operating and maintenance cost of $2 million will span the 30 year project life time. Three different scenarios were proposed for financing the project and relevant break-even points were determined for each of the scenarios. Eventually, it appears that based on the evaluations, constructing such a transit system in METU campus will be cost effective and will certainly enhance the transportation, and will contribute to the institutional improvements and environmental preservation schemes of METU campus.

AplicaÃÃo da teoria fuzzy em um modelo de transporte de massa, para avaliar o risco da dispersÃo dos poluentes atmosfÃricos / Application of fuzzy theory in a mass transport model to study the risk of dispersion of air pollutants

Heloisa Beatriz Cordeiro Moreira 14 February 2014 (has links)
Air pollution problems increasingly become more critical, requiring continuous monitoring and controls in order to ensure an appropriate environment for the community in general. The impact sources of air pollution from existing or new sources can be evaluated using mathematical models or models of air quality. This tool allows for evaluate the effects (risks) of air pollutants to the environment in several variables. In this context, the Fuzzy theory emerged as a viable solution to study the risk of failure of a system of air pollution different releases. This theory combined with the principle of mass transportation has allowed fields of risk are determined and can assess whether the controls adopted are reliable. This paper proposes a methodology based on a mathematical modeling of air dispersion process pollutants, where their parameters are membership functions, defined according for Fuzzy theory. The research uses these concepts in the solution of the equation Gaussian Fuzzy to determine the risk of failure and ensuring sustainability of the release of pollutants at different concentrations for continuous and instantaneous emissions. The results showed that the best conditions of stability for the dispersion of pollutants is unstable and the risk of system failure in this condition is zero, with concentration values within the parameters of the relevant legislation, without causing impacts on the environment the environment or to the community around.

Applying Supervised Learning Algorithms and a New Feature Selection Method to Predict Coronary Artery Disease

Duan, Haoyang 15 May 2014 (has links)
From a fresh data science perspective, this thesis discusses the prediction of coronary artery disease based on Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) from the Ontario Heart Genomics Study (OHGS). First, the thesis explains the k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN) and Random Forest learning algorithms, and includes a complete proof that k-NN is universally consistent in finite dimensional normed vector spaces. Second, the thesis introduces two dimensionality reduction techniques: Random Projections and a new method termed Mass Transportation Distance (MTD) Feature Selection. Then, this thesis compares the performance of Random Projections with k-NN against MTD Feature Selection and Random Forest for predicting artery disease. Results demonstrate that MTD Feature Selection with Random Forest is superior to Random Projections and k-NN. Random Forest is able to obtain an accuracy of 0.6660 and an area under the ROC curve of 0.8562 on the OHGS dataset, when 3335 SNPs are selected by MTD Feature Selection for classification. This area is considerably better than the previous high score of 0.608 obtained by Davies et al. in 2010 on the same dataset.

The proposed input stage architecture is composed by a conventional single-phase rectifier connected with a five interleaved boost rectifiers operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), avoiding commutation boost diode losses, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and promoting simple control actions, robustness and reliability for the structure. Furthermore, due to the power lines characteristics, the proposed input power structure can act as AC to DC or as DC to DC converter providing a proper DC output voltage range required to the DC bus. When operating as AC to DC, the converter is capable to provide high power factor with reduced input current harmonic distortion, complying with the imposed restrictions by IEC 61000-3-4 standard. In addition, a special input current correction technique, using input voltage reference, is employed in order to achieve low harmonic distortions considering operation with low voltage static gain for the DCM interleaved boost rectifier pre-regulator. For implementation of the output voltage control and input current correction was used a field programmable gate array (FPGA) device with verilog hardware description language (VHDL). In addition using the same FPGA device, a management control system was implemented, promoting the required automatic operation changes when the vehicle is commuted from the DC power supply to the AC power supply and viceversa, keeping the original electrical DC bus characteristics for the trolleybus.
