In this study what is being offered to MBA candidates is investigated, and within the context of supply and demand, the provision of instruction in the topic of 'business closure', to MBA students, is examined. This paper reports on the results from an extensive, broad based, international survey of MBA curricula. Through frequency of expression, topics regarded as either important or popular enough to be taught were identified. / This survey establishes a benchmark for MBA curricular content and enables comment on the relevance of some popular ranking systems used by stakeholders e.g. intending students and employers, to assess the potential value of the MBA course. Misconceptions, concerning course content and potential value are discussed. / It is suggested that an internationally cooperative, consistent and relevant approach to the skill sets that are taught to MBA students would benefit stakeholders to better select the MBA course that is best suited to their aspirations or requirements. / Further, such an approach would also benefit the ability of regulatory and interested parties in assessing, ranking and improving the quality of an MBA education. Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In most developing economies, and in South Africa in particular, students’ perceptions, motives and attitudes towards the Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) have increasingly become a topic of interest to researchers and academics. Given the high number of students registering to study towards an MBA degree each year, this research assignment aimed to investigate and illuminate the perceived impact of an MBA degree from the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) on salary and career advancement. Data was collected through a carefully designed and structured questionnaire. Supplemented by a comprehensive literature review, the study applied descriptive and inferential statistical procedures along with various tools of analysis to analyse the perceived effects of the USB MBA degree on its students’ income and career advancement. The general perception among MBA graduates was that an MBA degree might help them achieve a major breakthrough in their career path and long-term advancement, accompanied by an increase in income. A further perception was that the reputation of an accredited business school would get them rewarding job opportunities at reputable organisations.

Following attendance at a conference of the United States based Executive MBA Council in the year 2000, it was apparent that an increasing number of providers of Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs were including an international study tour component in their programs. / To place this in perspective, in 1994 there were 132 member institutions of the Executive MBA Council. The majority of member institutions were based in the United States. An international study tour component was involved in 73 of the programs with 16 of these optional. In 2001 there were 155 member institutions with an increased number of members from Europe and Asia-Pacific. They provided 194 programs of which 152 included an international study tour with only 10 optional. / In order to address this phenomenon of increasing exposure to global activities through an international study tour, the main purpose of what an MBA is to achieve was investigated. To gain insight into this post-graduate educational program, its genesis and evolution was researched from the literature and a comtemporary ideal type model of an MBA program was generated. / Thesis (DBA(DoctorateofBusinessAdministration))--University of South Australia, 2006.
