Orientador: Sergio Roberto Nobre / Banca: Rosa Lúcia Sverzut Baroni / Banca: Marcos Vieira Teixeira / Banca: Carlos Roberto de Moraes / Banca: Fábio Maia Bertato / Resumo: De caráter investigativo e historiográfico, esta pesquisa tem por intuito reconstituir a origem do Instituto de Matemática da Universidade Federal do Ceará (IMUFC), criado em 1960, com base na história do Instituto Cearense de Matemática (ICEM), fundado em 1954, ao qual a existência daquele está atrelada. Entrevistas e depoimentos escritos de professores envolvidos na criação dos institutos, bem como significativa documentação dos trâmites legais e institucionais que garantiram a fundação e o funcionamento de ambas as entidades constituem a base deste estudo. Obteve-se acervo gráfico institucional na Universidade Federal do Ceará. Os resultados indicam que a realização dos Colóquios Brasileiros de Matemática exerceram influência no processo histórico de consolidação do ICEM. Essa consolidação fez o ICEM atualizar em matemática os professores da Universidade do Ceará durante os dois anos em que o funcionou como unidade mandatária (1958-1959), até a sua incorporação definitiva pela UC. Portanto o IMUFC é originário do ICEM. Esse fato não é tão comum na história de criação dos institutos de matemática das universidades federais no Brasil, sobretudo quando se atenta para o fato de que o ICEM foi constituído como uma sociedade civil sem fins lucrativos. Portanto, detalhar os eventos que cercam a criação dos institutos contribui para o conhecimento da história das instituições no Brasil / Abstract: This research has investigative and historiographical character and is meant to trace the origin of the Mathematical Institute of the Federal University of Ceará (IMUFC). The institute was created in 1960, based on the history of the Institute of Mathematics of Ceará (ICEM), founded in 1954, to which its existence is tied. Interviews and written statements of teachers involved in the creation of institutes and documentation of significant legal and institutional procedures that ensured the foundation and operation of both entities constitute the basis of this study. It was obtained an institutional graphic collection at the Federal University of Ceará. The results indicate that the performance of the Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium exerted influences in the historical process of consolidation of the ICEM. This consolidation made the ICEM update in mathematics the university professor in Ceará, which during the two years it worked as mandatory unit (1958-1959), until a definitive merger by UC, the UFC approved the order of their request for incorporation. Therefore, the IMUFC is originated from the ICEM. This fact is not very common in the history of the creation of mathematical institutes in federal Universities in Brazil, especially when attention is called to the fact that The ICEM was constituted as a civil non-profit society.
