A study on mathematics problem-posing teaching and parent-child problem-posing for grade four elementary class: Case of number and operationKuo, Hsien-chung 17 July 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to integrate problem-posing teaching activities into mathematics curriculum for grade four elementary school students. The contents include three units on number and operation. Data collection included using the parent-child problem-posing worksheet, student mathematics diary, teacher teaching journal, mathematics attitude measurement form, parent and students interviews, in order to study the influence of problem-posing teaching on teacher and students mathematics attitude and parent-child interactions. The investigator aimed at bringing up specific suggestion on teaching.
There are six results in this study:
1. Problem-posing teaching can increase students¡¦ problem-posing ability.
2. Problem-posing teaching can improve students¡¦ mathematics attitude.
3. Problem-posing teaching can enhance students¡¦ mathematics learning.
4. Parent-child problem-posing can promote parent-child co-learning, and increase parent-child interactions.
5. Parent-child problem-posing can make parent understand their children¡¦s mathematics curriculum, and they are not afraid when supervising children.
6. In teacher¡¦s reflection, it recorded that a change of teaching mode to problem posing to promote mathematics learning was feasible, and problem-posing teaching fit in the ¡§student-centered¡¨ teaching spirit of Nine-years-integration.

An intervention programme to improve the self-concept and attitudes of prospective mathematics teachersMoyana, Hlengani Jackson 06 1900 (has links)
This study attempted to design and implement an intervention programme to
improve the self-concepts and attitudes of prospective primary school teachers.
The possible effects of the programme were researched by means of a combined
quantitative and qualitative approach. A questionnaire to determine the
effectiveness of the programme was also designed. Important findings of this
study are that:
(a) the Cronbach Alpha Coefficient indicated a 0,9 reliability of the designed
questionnaire;
(b) the average self-concepts of prospective teachers improved after the
intervention programme was implemented, though not significantly and
(c) the self-concepts of prospective teachers not majoring in Mathematics
also improved after the intervention, though not significantly.
A focus group interview was conducted to improve the intervention programme.
On the basis of the responses of the participants in the focus group interview as
well as of the quantitative study and of the literature reviewed, an improved
version of the intervention programme was designed. According to the research,
the programme should include: cooperative learning; everyday life contexts;
manipulatives; hands-on activities, encouraging the asking of questions; a
positive relationship between lecturer and student; writing assignments before
doing a new topic; content relevance; a positive communication of assessment;
games; various approaches to solving problems; understandable language;
gender sensitivity and positive role modeling.
The intervention programme implemented in this study was tested over a period
of three months; hence the recommendation in this research for the replication
thereof over a longer period. The study further recommends that since the study
was conducted in one college of education only, there is a need for it to be
conducted in a number of colleges, in order to elicit a broader and more
representative picture of the impact of the intervention programme.
The findings of this study advocate the need to combine both quantitative and
qualitative research in studies: the results of the quantitative research did not
conclusively indicate a positive impact of the intervention programme. However,
the qualitative research saw respondents expressing improved confidence and

The predictors of success of computer aided learning of pre-calculus algebraYushau, Balarabe 14 November 2004 (has links)
Mathematics achievement has been of great concern to researchers involved in mathematics education. This concern has resulted in research seeking to determine for example, the factors that positively or negatively contribute to student performance in mathematics. Many of the reported studies in the literature have investigated the factors within the context of mathematics teaching and learning in general. Very few studies have investigated the factors contributing to student achievement in mathematics when learning takes place in a computer aided environment. With the pervasiveness of computers in education in general, studies in this direction become imperative. The present study fills this gap in the literature by examining the extent to which selected variables (mathematics attitude, mathematics aptitude, computer attitude, computer prior experience, computer ownership, proficiency in language of instruction, and learning style) contribute to students' achievements in pre-calculus algebra classes that are supplemented with a computer lab program. The participants in the study were 120 students sampled from the population of students enrolled in the second pre-calculus algebra course at the preparatory year program of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals during the 2003/2004 academic session. The instruments used to measure the study constructs were the mathematics attitude scale (Aiken, 1979), the computer attitudes scale (Loyd & Gressard, 1984a), and the learning styles questionnaire (Honey & Mumford, 1992). New instruments to measure computer prior experience and computer ownership were developed for the present study.
Hypotheses formulated for the study were tested using multiple regression and other statistical techniques. The results show that mathematics aptitudes and English language proficiency are the most significant contributors to students' mathematics achievement. No other variables show statistically significant effects on students' achievement. Together, the selected variables explain more than 41 percent of the total variance of students' achievement.
