Orientador: Romulo Campos Lins / Banca: Maria Ângela Miorim / Banca: Ole Skovsmose / Resumo: O presente trabalho mostra o desenrolar da história pela busca de uma resposta para uma pergunta nem sempre feita, mesmo o ensino de matemática sendo uma prática comum nas escolas. Em outras palavras, a pergunta "por que ensinar matemática?", parece um questionamento desnecessário tendo em vista a intensa matemática presente em nossa vida e a naturalidade com que lidamos com ela, seja para utilizá-la ou para assumirmos nossa aversão à mesma. Contudo, quando me permiti fazer esse questionamento a falta da resposta foi um tamanho incômodo que hoje está menor, pois ainda não encontrei a minha resposta, mas, em compensação, conheci a de outros. E são essas respostas que ofereço nesse trabalho, apresentando os diversos entendimentos a respeito do ensino de matemática, concepções de mundo, a relação existente entre a matemática e as mudanças ocorridas na sociedade, questionamentos para o ensino atual e, por fim, como estas diversas visões do ensino de matemática se relacionam, contrapondo-se e/ou completando-se / Abstract: The present work shows the story's unfolded for search of an answer to a question unusual, even the teach of mathematics being a common practical at schools. In other words, the question: Why teach mathematics?" seems an unnecessary question considering the mathematics intense present in our life and the naturally that deal with itself, as to use as to run away it. However, when I let myself to do this question, the lack of answer was a great inconvenience that actually is smaller, because I'm not found the answer yet, but I knew the other people's replies who are showed in this work, pointing the understand different about teach of mathematics, conceptions of the world, the relationship between math and society's change, questions for the current teaching and finally how this several sights to have a relationship with each other / Mestre
