Wu, Y-T., Nelis, S.M., Quinn, Catherine, Martyr, A., Jones, I.R., Victor, C.R., Knapp, M., Henderson, C., Hindle, J.V., Jones, R.W., Kopelman, M.D., Morris, R.G., Pickett, J.A., Rusted, J.M., Thom, J.M., Litherland, R., Matthews, F.E., Clare, L., IDEAL Programme team 18 February 2020 (has links)
Yes / a large number of studies have explored factors related to self- and informant ratings of quality of life in people with dementia, but many studies have had relatively small sample sizes and mainly focused on health conditions and dementia symptoms. The aim of this study is to compare self- and informant-rated quality of life, life satisfaction and well-being, and investigate the relationships of the two different rating methods with various social, psychological and health factors, using a large cohort study of community-dwelling people with dementia and carers in Great Britain. Methods: this study included 1,283 dyads of people with mild-to-moderate dementia and their primary carers in the Improving the experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active Life study. Multivariate modelling was used to investigate associations of self- and informant-rated quality of life, life satisfaction and well-being with factors in five domains: psychological characteristics and health; social location; capitals, assets and resources; physical fitness and health; and managing everyday life with dementia. Results: people with dementia rated their quality of life, life satisfaction and well-being more highly than did the informants. Despite these differences, the two approaches had similar relationships with social, psychological and physical health factors in the five domains. Conclusion: although self- and informant ratings differ, they display similar results when focusing on factors associated with quality of life, life satisfaction and well-being. Either self- or informant ratings may offer a reasonable source of information about people with dementia in terms of understanding associated factors. / The IDEAL study’ was funded jointly by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) through grant ES/L001853/2. Realistic Modelling of Ultrasound Sensing for Autonomous Vehicles

Ni, Houbo January 2019 (has links)
Ultrasonic sensors are popular in parking functions in automotive. They are used to measure distances between a car and obstacles near the car. Car companies need to prove that sensors are reliable before using them on vehicles since these sensors are safety-critical. Therefore, it has great practical value to research on the measurement and verification of ultrasonic sensors. The purpose of this thesis work is to analyse analog parts of some ultrasonic sensors. Measurement methods and three experimental setups are designed to get analog data. Ice, soil, stones or some other things on the road might cover the sensor, which limits the movement of horn and causes measurement errors. Sensor impedance is measured to check the possibility of blockage situation detection in a simulation of a real environment. The work also includes analysing the ultrasonic sensor beam pattern, the sound reflection from the environment, noise reduction, the relationship between the signal voltage amplitude and different positions of sensors, influences on different input signal lengths, and bandwidth investigation of the ultrasonic sensor. MATLAB compares measurement results with theory or simulation, All methods and setups are validated by getting measurement results successfully and correctly. Sensor blockage situation is recognized clearly by different impedance magnitudes. Sensors types under study are different from sensors installed on cars. However, other ultrasonic sensor measurements can utilize the same measurement methods and experimental setups. This thesis has been performed in collaboration with the company Volvo Car Corporation active safety department.

On the Experimental Determination of Damping of Metals and Calculation of Thermal Stresses in Solidifying Shells

Åberg, Jonas January 2006 (has links)
This thesis explores experimentally and theoretically two different aspects of the properties and behaviour of metals: their ability to damp noise and their susceptibility to crack when solidifying. The first part concerns intrinsic material damping, and is motivated by increased demands from society for reductions in noise emissions. It is a material’s inherent ability to reduce its vibration level, and hence noise emission, and transform its kinetic energy into a temperature increase. To design new materials with increased intrinsic material damping, we need to be able to measure it. In this thesis, different methods for measurement of the intrinsic damping have been considered: one using Fourier analysis has been experimentally evaluated, and another using a specimen in uniaxial tension to measure the phase-lag between stress and strain has been improved. Finally, after discarding these methods, a new method has been developed. The new method measures the damping properties during compression using differential calorimetry. A specimen is subjected to a cyclic uniaxial stress to give a prescribed energy input. The difference in temperature between a specimen under stress and a non-stressed reference sample is measured. The experiments are performed in an insulated vacuum container to reduce convective losses. The rate of temperature change, together with the energy input, is used as a measure of the intrinsic material damping in the specimen. The results show a difference in intrinsic material damping, and the way in which it is influenced by the internal structure is discussed. The second part of the thesis examines hot cracks in solidifying shells. Most metals have a brittle region starting in the two-phase temperature range during solidification and for some alloys this region extends as far as hundreds of degrees below the solidus temperature. To calculate the risk of hot cracking, one needs, besides knowledge of the solidifying material’s ability to withstand stress, knowledge of the casting process to be able to calculate the thermal history of the solidification, and from this calculate the stress. In this work, experimental methods to measure and evaluate the energy transfer from the solidifying melt have been developed. The evaluated data has been used as a boundary condition to numerically calculate the solidification process and the evolving stress in the solidifying shell. A solidification model has been implemented using a fixed-domain methodology in a commercial finite element code, Comsol Multiphysics. A new solidification model using an arbitrary Lagrange Eulerian (ALE) formulation has also been implemented to solve the solidification problem for pure metals. This new model explicitly tracks the movement of the liquid/solid interface and is much more effective than the first model. / QC 20100929

Para além da perspectiva residencial : novas abordagens para a análise da segregação

Lisboa, Flávia Seixas, Zioni, Silvana Maria, Monteiro, Antonio Miguel Vieira January 2017 (has links)
Orientadora: Profa. Dra. / There are several perspectives in the debates on segregation. Whether they are sociological, economic, or geographical, in the end they all express the inequalities that prevail in our socie-ties. However, most of the work on segregation adopts the residential perspective for its evalu-ation, a fact that has been questioned in some studies on the issue, since the daily experiences of individuals are not limited to their place of residence. Based on the concept of space of activities, this work aims to present new ways to evaluate and measure the segregation. In this case study, the segregation in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo was analyzed and measured based on three approaches: residential space, workplace space and activity space. The use of dispersion/clustering and exposure/isolation measures to capture the different dimensions of segregation and the association between global and local indexes allowed complementary anal-yses regarding the segregation patterns for each of the approaches. As a result, it was possible to demonstrate that the incorporation of new analytical perspectives, such as the presence of different social groups in the different localities to carry out their activities, can change the population composition. Consequently, this softens or accentuate the levels of segregation.
