Termination of mission : an exit strategy for the Wesleyan mission of AfricaCameron, Lindsay Logan 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation develops an exit strategy for missions, drawing upon the experience of the Wesleyan Church in Africa. This is approached in four sections: a literature review, a summary of Wesleyan mission work in Africa, a model for mission work that has been developed within the Wesleyan Church, and applications of the model. The model proposes five stages through which the work of missions progresses: the development of converts, disciples, pastors, leaders and partners. The fourth chapter includes a discussion of related models: the Three Eras of Missions and the Two Types of Missions. At the completion of the 5 Stages of Missions the establishment of a mature national church, fully engaged in international missions and international church leadership, has been achieved. This dissertation concludes that final departure may not be necessary for all missionaries. Thesis / There is potential for a schism, within the Methodist Church of
Southern Africa (MCSA) today, between Fundamentalist and
Liberationist Methodists, who struggle to find common identity
and vision.
A question that needs examination is whether it is possible to
develop an authentically, uniting Southern African Methodist
Theology within the current Institutional structure of the MCSA.
For this to become possible, some key areas of discussion are
highlighted in this paper, such as the training of ministers and
the MCSA as Institution.
This paper attempts to enter into conversation between
Fundamental and Liberation Methodism using the Doctrine of
Christian Perfection, 'the Grand Depositum' of Methodism, as a
point of reference and develop an epistemological framework
based on Wesley’s 'quadrilateral' of Scripture, reason, experience
and tradition.
This paper takes as a standpoint the need for an authentically
Southern African Methodist theology, which is both uniting and
transformatory, in order for the MCSA to fulfil its vision of “A

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Recent Apologetic ThoughtWeldy, Bradley Jason 16 May 2014 (has links)
This dissertation examines the influence and role of the Holy Spirit in the task of apologetics.
The first chapter recognizes the historical dearth of apologetic engagement dealing with the Spirit, and it lays out the need to intentionally correct this scarcity. This chapter in particular acknowledges that certain perspectives--Reformed, Anglican-Methodist, and charismatic--have already begun to reengaged the essential work of the Spirit in apologetics. And, finally, this chapter argues that various thinkers within these perspectives will shed light on developing a more robust Spirit apologetic.
Chapter 2 highlights the impetus for re-engaging the Spirit as he relates to apologetics Alvin Plantinga, and so-called Reformed Epistemology, have reintroduced a place for the Spirit in apologetics, focusing primarily on the experiential component of the internal instigation of the Holy Spirit, which operates as a special kind of cognitive equipment.
Chapter 3 discusses the Spirit and apologetics as relates to the Anglican-Methodist perspective. This chapter begins by connecting these two perspectives--Anglican and Methodist--into a fused perspective. Two key thinkers within this perspective--William Alston and William Abraham--are then examined for their contributions to the Spirit and his experiential deliverance of knowledge. The key part of this Spirit apologetic hones in on the perception or awareness of God .
Chapter 4 discusses the charismatic contribution to philosophy in general and the Spirit in particular. As the newest perspective to engage Spirit apologetics, the charismatic chapter begins with a justification for including this perspective in this project. This chapter also examines thinkers--like James K. A. Smith--as they isolate a Spirit apologetic more bent toward affective or emotional epistemic grounding.
Chapter 5 concludes this dissertation with a summary of these three perspectives. The Spirit is discussed briefly for his role as an apologist and evangelist, and a concise discussion is included concerning further areas of research and suggestive comments that may be drawn from the conclusions. In addition, this chapter offers a brief and evaluative discussion--based on observations from all perspectives--on the main trajectory of Spirit apologetics.

"For healing and transformation" : a feminist ecclesiological study on the gap between gender policy and practice in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA)Sprong, Jenette Louisa. January 2011 (has links)
The main premise of this study is that while gender justice is enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa and in the declared statements of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA), in practice gender justice receives minimal attention in this church. The existing ‘gender policy’ of the MCSA, which is a mere recommendation, endorses an equitable representation of women, youth and men at every level of Church governance. Since this ‘policy’ is couched in the language of ‘recommendation’, this study argues that a gap continues to exist between policy and practice in the MCSA. Using Letty Russell’s (1993) ‘Table Fellowship’ analogy in her book Church in the Round – Feminist Interpretation of the Church, and Musimbi Kanyoro’s subsequent (1997) In Search of a Round Table: Gender Theology and Church Leadership, the discussions in this thesis focus on ‘the Table’ of the Church.
The research question this study seeks to address is: Why does the MCSA continue to marginalise and exclude women, even though its mission is to be a church of healing and transformation and its gender policy is meant to prevent such marginalisation and exclusion? Hence, the objectives of this study are firstly, to demonstrate the ways in which the MCSA continues to be patriarchal in its ecclesiological practices and secondly, to analyse the reasons why the MCSA remains steeped in patriarchy.
In order to respond to the research question this study utilises a feminist ecclesiological theoretical framework, which examines and analyses the MCSA’s source documents, its liturgies and its hymns.
The theoretical framework is also used to consider the stories of five Methodist women from a narrative perspective. The Wesleyan Quadrilateral – Sacred Scripture, Church Tradition, Human Reason and Personal Experience – was engaged in this research, when deemed relevant.
Transformative models of being church, that will enhance and enable the healing and transformation that the MCSA has declared to be its mission, are proposed in the conclusion, thus fulfilling the third objective of this study. It is here where the hope for gender-healing in the MCSA is expressed, along with a dream that this study will be ‘one more voice’ that is heard.
