[en] INDIANS FINAL JUDGMENT: WAR AND POLITICS IN THE CONQUEST OF THE ARGENTINEAN SOUTHERN DESERT (1867-1879) / [pt] O JUÍZO FINAL DOS ÍNDIOS: GUERRA E POLÍTICA NA CONQUISTA DO DESERTO AUSTRAL ARGENTINO (1867-1879)

ALESSANDRA GONZALEZ DE CARVALHO SEIXLACK 18 November 2013 (has links)
[en] In the decade of 1870’s, the Argentine Government had not yet consolidated their jurisdiction over the territorial extension corresponding to the former Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata. Besides being object of border disputes with other republics, regions of chaquenha, pampas and Patagonia remained under the effective domain of different indigenous groups. Identified to the idea of desert, these areas were prime targets for projects of integration to the world of civilization and modernity. This dissertation aims to analyze the proposed policies and military strategies drawn up by the Ministers of War and Navy Adolfo Alsina and Julio Argentino Roca, which were discussed in the Argentine National Congress in the 1870’s concerning the southern region and territorial confrontation of the Indian problem. This study seeks to interpret the conflicting positions of Alsina and Roca as complementary steps of nation-building process in Argentina and its corresponding territory. In this context, the delimitation of the national territory through the state occupation would enable the monopoly of power over the whole population who inhabited there, and the legal legitimacy of the application of that power, by disassociating Argentina from the image of the desert and the savagery of native populations as well as identifying it as the set of civilized nations.

[en] THE DEVIL ARAUCANIA AND THE UNTAMED DESERT: DEBATES ABOUT THE ARAUCANIA PACIFICATION IN CHILE AND THE CONQUEST OF THE ARGENTINEAN SOUTHERN DESERT / [pt] ENTRE A ARAUCANIA MALDITA E O DESERTO INDÔMITO: DEBATES OITOCENTISTAS SOBRE A PACIFICAÇÃO DA ARAUCANIA NO CHILE E A CONQUISTA DO DESERTO NA ARGENTINA

ALESSANDRA GONZALEZ DE CARVALHO SEIXLACK 12 January 2018 (has links)
[en] In the Argentinean and Chilean historical experiences, the Araucania, the Pampas and the Patagonia were usually described by criollos authorities as desert regions, placed out of civilization, once during the XIXth century, those places constituted spaces of sovereignty exercise from different indigenous groups. The thesis purpose is to analyze the political speeches made by intellectuals criollos in this context, in order to legitimize expansionist movements, and modernizing projects that intended to incorporate those regions to the public power orbit, civilizing their habitants or extinguishing them if necessary. Although, it attempts to identify the natives answers faced to the new imposing contact modality, accentuating their roles as capable subjects to adapt and resist to the criollos politics. With a comparative approach, this thesis transcends the purpose to identity similar and different traces between the frontier spaces, and the ways of interaction established between criollos and indigenous groups, but also is considered highlight the interconnection points between the experiences in the territorial expansion occurred in Chile and Argentina.

ʼIntishār al-Islām fī al-Ḥabsha ʼathāruh wa-ʼabaʻaduh / Spread of Islam and its impact in Abyssinia

Abdulsemed, Mohammed Hamidin 01 September 2015 (has links)
Arabic text with English summary / This research comprises a section on preliminary issues, an introduction, four chapters with sub-divisions and a conclusion. Preliminary issues focus on the research proposal. The introduction reviews factors contributing to the concealment of Muslims’ roles in Abyssinia through negligence, selective reportage and duplicitous political dealings. Chapter One tackles the varying definitions of Abyssinia diachronically and then provides valuable social, economic, political, religious and climatic information about the country and its peoples. Chapter Two analyses the varying levels of relations between Abyssinia and the Arabian Peninsula including the ethnic, cultural, linguistic, religious and political ties down the ages. Chapter Three discusses the migration of some of Prophet Muhammad’s companions to Abyssinia and possible reasons for selecting that land for settlement. It details identities of these people, their areas of arrival and domicile; together with a probe into the Christian ruler, Negus’s warm relations with them. Chapter Four overviews Muslim dynasties in Abyssinia: the causes for their formation, prosperity and decline. The bitter conflicts with Christians and followers of traditional religions are also explored; together with outcomes of these for Muslims up to the present. The Conclusion provides a resume of my most important findings. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M.A. (Islamic Studies)

Jednání o míru na konci třicetileté války / Peace negotiations at the end of the Thirty Years' War

Vokřínek, Lukáš January 2016 (has links)
The author analyses the Westphalian peace negotiations ending the Thirty Years War in order to find out to what extent it had influenced the parallel Swedish military campaigns. In the Czech Republic, it is the return of the broader analysis of this important historical event that leaded to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. In recent years had not been given enough attention to these events, although abroad (typically in Germany) the research continues with greater intensity. The structure of the text is following. At first the author pursues the main development features of the Thirty Years War and subsequently recapitulates the way to the Westphalian peace talks since the first proposals for a final settlement of the constantly prolonging conflict after the start of diplomatic activity at the congress in the Westphalian city of Münster and Osnabrück in the (first) half of the 1640s. Then discusses the basic characteristics of the congress, among others also key delegations and their significant (or just interesting) members participating in the negotiations. Thereafter, the text continues to its core section, consisting of two parts. The first of them is about the progress of the peace negotiations on the basis of analysis of each of the main discussing issues in relation to the conflict in the...

Schoemansdal : 'n Voortrekkergrensdorp, 1848-1868 / Schoemansdal : a Voortrekker border town, 1848-1868

De Waal, Jochemus Johannes 02 1900 (has links)
May 1848 a number of white settlers from Ohrigstad arrived in the Soutpansberg. Under the leadership of Hendrik Potgieter, a pioneer town was developed. In 1855 Stephan us Schoeman replanned and renamed the town. The local government consisted of the commandantgeneral, a landdrost, heemrade, government officials and town officers. The region was unhealthy and fever stricken. Numerous graves in the graveyard are the tragic signs of many deaths. However, hardy Trekkers, endured the sickness and hardships. For 16 years there was no minister until, in 1864, the Rev Van Warmelo settled in Schoemansdal and worked zealously for the spiritual and educational upliftment of the inhabitants. Most people were conservative and illiterate. Their clothes were plain and usually home-made, and they were very sociable. There were different occupations. Woodcutters were well paid and wood was abundant. Hunting was lucrative because there were plenty of wild animals and elephant, and hunting products, especially ivory, had good market value. Black communities, which already inhabited the area, distrusted the whites. The whites settled, annexed the land and hunted wherever they wanted, while the blacks were compelled to work and pay taxes. Military campaigns were undertaken against headmen who were regarded as disobedient, livestock was seized, women, and children, were abducted under the indenture system. All this caused open hostility. Campaigns were launched against the blacks but they could not be subjected because of the mountainous terrain. The blacks obtained weapons illegally. Trade deteriorated and the whites became poorer and started to quarrel amongst themselves. The white inhabitants moved into the fort and Paul Kruger was sent by the Transvaal government with 400 men to force the Venda into submission. The attempt failed and on 15 July 1867 the town was evacuated. Schoeman, with a small army, also made an unsuccessful attempt. Schoemansdal would never be rebuilt and was the first white settlement to surrender to black majority. / History / D.Litt. et Phil. (Geskiedenis)
