May 23, 2017. / After studying matrix model quantum mechanics for one and two matrices and the eigenvalue dynamics of the one matrix model, evidence is found that there is a sector of the two matrix model that can be reduced to eigenvalue dynamics. This sector is defined by the SU(2) sector of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory. Evidence is found by doing explicit computations of correlation functions using an interesting generalization of the usual Van der Monde determinant. The observables we study are the BPS operators of the SU(2) sector and include traces of products of both matrices, which are genuine multi matrix observables. These operators are associated to supergravity solutions of string theory. / XL2018

Tumble mills are hollow cylindrical shells of large diameter carrying grinding media (a combination of rock/iron ore/chemical flakes and metal balls/rods), which, upon rotation of the mill, will be ground into fine powder. These mills rotate at low speeds using a gear reduction unit and often have vibration problems. These vibration problems result in increased gear wear and occasional catastrophic failures resulting in production loss. The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of oscillation of grinding media on torsional vibrations of the mill. A theoretical model was developed to determine the oscillating frequency of the grinding media. A 12" (0.3 m) diameter tumble mill test rig was built with a 0.5 hp DC motor. The rig is tested with sand and iron bb balls to simulate the industry process application. At low volume levels the grinding media oscillates like a rigid body as compared to higher volumes. It is shown that tumbling action of grinding media causes torsional excitation and hence its effect has to be considered in torsional vibration analysis. At starting, the load on the gears is much higher due to this oscillation.

Examining early biographical events in C. Wright Mills’ life, along with his relationships to his family, some of whom he denied as even being family later in his life, the following study demonstrates a link between the early psychological traumas of a young Mills and the strong impact these had on his later intellectual thought. Such an approach looms as potentially important and beneficial in gaining insight into Mills’ theoretical positions when we turn to academics such as Alice Miller, Sigmund Freud and C.G. Jung who demonstrate the lasting and shaping impact that early psychological development has on the thoughts, ideas and expressions of older adults. Even for empirical-based sociologists who may be hesitant to accept psychoanalytic explanations, it is difficult to reject this position outright. Even within sociology’s own house, Max Weber, Talcott Parsons, David Riesman and C. Wright Mills also utilize basic psychoanalytic insights in their sociological writings. Using Mills’ psychological development as an entry point, this work demonstrates the similarities between Mills’ early biographical trajectory and its psychological impact on his later life as compared to very similar developments in the lives of Friedrich Nietzsche, Thorstein Veblen and Weber. Ultimately, we come to see that not only is Mills’ early psychological development similar to these earlier thinkers, but his intellectual thought later in his life is similar as well.
