Previous issue date: 2017-06-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Idealized by the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
South, the periodical ―Woman‟s Missionary Advocate‖, published monthly in the United
States and without any interruptions between 1880 and 1910, used to receive information
from the missionaries who reported their experiences in several parts of the world, including
Brazil. Its first number was started in July, 1880 with 16 pages and its last edition was
published in December, 1910 with 47 pages. The newspaper based on the saying ―from
woman to woman‖ was totally managed by women and supported by annual subscriptions.
Besides the actions of the missions in the educational field, it published, in full, the annual
meetings of the Woman‘s Board of Foreign Mission and the several missionary activities
accomplished in the mission fields. In the end of XIX century, several societies were
organized with the purpose of becoming the activity of expanding Methodism more efficient
and structured. Even the movement being led by men and considering the missionaries were
married and their wives were consequently equally involved in this project, the scenario
changes after the increase of the Woman's Missionary Societies that became an objective of
great benefit at Church to take different positions and tasks, mainly in the establishment of
schools. The purpose of this research is to study the North-American Methodist Missionary
Movement in Brazil, in reference of the educational aspect, based on the woman's
involvement. Through analysis procedures based on the Cultural History perspective, it is
supported in the studies of Roger Chartier about practical notions and representations, and of
Michel de Certeau in the distinction of the categories called tactics and strategies, in the study
of the cultural practices. The Woman‟s Missionary Advocate, a diffusing newspaper about the
Methodist missionary movement, especially with regard to the school education, was a
privileged place of dissemination and defense of the Methodist missionary ideals in a
historicity that highlights the women's role. Through its study was possible to defend the
theses about the female protagonism in the Methodist missionary movement in Brazil,
showing the women's effective involvement more than the direct action at schools / Idealizado pela Sociedade Missionária Estrangeira da Mulher da Igreja Metodista Episcopal
estudo permitiu defender a tese do protagonismo feminino no movimento missionário
metodista no Brasil, mostrando a participação efetiva das mulheres para além da atuação
direta nas escolas

Journey to the Margins: the Contribution of the Missionary Society of St Columban to the theory and practice of overseas mission within the Australian Catholic Church 1920-2000Rue, Rev. Charles Douglas, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2002 (has links)
This thesis aims to show that the Columban Society made definable and significant contributions to the Australian Catholic missionary movement. The scope of the thesis is an analysis of the work of the Missionary Society of St Columban (Columban Society) in Australia from 1920-2000. Rather than the Society’s foundation in Ireland or its overseas missionary work, the focus is the activity of the Columban Society in Australia. The thesis argues that the Columban Society helped advance the understanding and practice of overseas mission within the Australian Catholic Church in four major ways. Firstly, by organising support for its own missionary venture in China and elsewhere, it helped foster mission mindedness among Australian Catholics and established structures for the ongoing resourcing of missionary activity. Secondly, it set up seminaries to train missionary priests and later opened its reformed tertiary level missionary formation programs to all church personnel in Australia. Thirdly, it helped mould Catholic opinion through its commentary on such international issues as Australian relations with Asian peoples. Finally, it contributed to the development and dissemination of new Catholic theological teaching, particularly in relation to social justice and indigenous churches, religious dialogue and the connections between faith and ecology. The Columban Society carved out a position for itself in Australia through negotiating with the local Catholic Church. Starting as a group of diocesan priests and, from 1920 onwards, tapping into the numerous Irish church personnel in Australia, the Society grew to become a missionary arm of the local church. It created a network of financial support and influence at the grass roots level in parishes and schools through a system of regular visits, collections and a monthly magazine. As the world and church changed, it added mission education programs that fed back to Australian Catholics ideas and experiences coming from the new indigenous churches. The distinctive contribution of the Columban Society to the Australian Catholic Missionary Movement lies in its close relationship with diocesan based parish Catholics and the teaching role it developed about missionary experiences of overseas churches within the context of international affairs. The Society has a significant placewithin the social history of Australia because of the direct influence it had on the opinions of the more than a quarter of the Australian population who identified as Catholics. The history of the Society is also a case study in the application of the reforms of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council of the Catholic Church 1962-1965 and the consequent redefinition of orthodox belief and practice.

The leadership spiritualityof multnomah bible college its impact on the organisation todayKopp, Bonnie Sue 30 November 2005 (has links)
This study examines archival materials, pertinent literary sources, and nine interviews, (identified in Chapter One), in order to understand the leadership spirituality of Multnomah Bible College and its impact on the organisation today. To accomplish this goal, a study of spirituality and, in particular Christian Spirituality was undertaken. Since Multnomah was established during the American Bible Institute Movement, the movement itself was researched to understand its theological and historical context. With this background in mind, the academy was researched to gain knowledge into its specific theological and historical context. The historical and theological trends in the Pacific Northwest were investigated first, along with influential individuals, to gain insight into what specifically motivated the inauguration of the academy in Portland, Oregon. After gaining insight into why the academy was established, the study was expanded further into a brief history of the development and expansion of the institution itself from 1936 to the present. This more extensive historical and theological background provides the necessary platform in understanding the present situation at Multnomah and its possible future. Subsequently, the individual spiritual journey of nine Multnomah leaders were explored through qualitative interviewing, the most effective means of obtaining such personal information. The findings shed light on their leadership spirituality and impact on the academy. The data from the research was subsequently evaluated in light of known theories of faith and leadership development. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Th.
