Promoting the implementation of collaborative tuberculosis and human immunodefiency virus activities in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

This study assessed implementation status of collaborative TB/HIV services in Addis Ababa City Administration aiming to promote better implementation strategies. The study employed mixed research methods and was descriptive. The study design used both quantitative and qualitative data using structured questionnaires and semi-structured interview guides, respectively. The study population for the quantitative design included 1,683 TB/HIV patients from 10 conveniently selected health facilities: Zewditu and Menelik Hospitals, health centres of Lideta, Yeka, Kazanchis, NifaSilk-Lafto-No1, Woreda-7, Kality, Bole and Gulele. All the patients who were on their follow-up cares during the data collection period were interviewed. Participants for qualitative design were 1,650 TB/HIV patients for short answered questions; 8 FGDs among patients; interview of 10 TB/HIV care facility coordinators/health workers and one regional TB/HIV care coordinator, all purposively selected. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS 15.0, while qualitative data were thematically analysed manually. Majority of HIV patients (92.8%) self-reported that they had been screened for TB; of which, 11.2% were diagnosed for active TB during their follow-up cares. Whereas, 87.1% of TB patients had been offered for HIV test; 79.8% tested; 20.2% tested positive. Knowledge on TB and HIV diseases, transmission and prevention was found to be low. However, participants appreciated the support of the healthcare delivery system in improving their health. Collaborative TB/HIV activities brought additional on-the-job training for healthcare workers; improved flow of logistics and re-arrangement of infrastructures of facilities. The study revealed that, implementation of collaborative TB/HIV activities in Addis Ababa need boosting. The study recommends the need for coordinated efforts of all stakeholders for improving implementation of collaborative TB/HIV care services, as identified by this study. The contribution of this study developed pocket-guide for healthcare workers on collaborative TB/HIV care services, which provides guidance in promoting better TB/HIV care / Health Studies / D. L'influence de la perception de l'espace de travail sur les perceptions du bien-être et de la performance individuelle du salarié au travail : le cas de l'open space / The influence of the perception of the workspace on perceptions of well-being and job performance at work : the case of open plan office

Durant ces dernières années, les espaces de travail n'ont cessé de changer, en fonction du type de l'organisation ou du travail effectué, mais surtout suite à la mondialisation, aux préoccupations environnementales et aux technologies de l'information et de la communication. L'espace est inhérent à toute situation de gestion, l'important est de déceler son influence sur les acteurs. Le travail perd peu à peu sa notion d'accomplissement de soi et les entreprises font face aujourd'hui à un mal-être des salariés. Cependant, le travail' ne se cantonne pas au stress ou aux troubles psychosociaux, mais il peut être une réalisation ou un dépassement de soi. Conséquemment, nous nous demandons dans quelle mesure la perception de l'espace de travail, notamment de l'open space, influence les perceptions du bien-être du salarié au travail ainsi que sa performance. Nous avons choisi une méthodologie mixte ayant pour finalité la complémentarité des méthodes. Cette stratégie permet de mobiliser simultanément une approche qualitative exploratoire et une approche quantitative. Notre recherche tend à démontrer une corrélation entre la perception de l'espace de travail et les perceptions de bien-être et de performance. S'il existe une relation significative d'une part entre la perception de l'espace de travail et la perception du bien-être au travail et d'autre part entre la perception de ce bien-être et de la performance individuelle, ce n'est pas le cas entre la perception de l'espace et de la performance. Cependant, nous pouvons nous demander si le bien-être du salarié serait un médiateur de la relation espace de travail et performance individuelle. / In recent years, workspaces have continued to change, depending on the type of organization or work, but mostly due to globalization, environmental concerns and information and communication technologies. Space is inherent to any management situation, it is important to detect its influence on the actors. Work gradually loses its notion of self-fulfillment, and companies today face an ill-being of employees. However, the work is not confined to stress or psycho social problems, but it can be a self-fulfillment. Consequently, we ask ourselves to what extent the perception of the workspace, particularly the open plan office, influences perceptions of well-being at work and job performance. We have chosen a mixed research methodology. This strategy allows us to simultaneously mobilize an exploratory qualitative approach and quantitative approach. Our research tends to show a correlation between the perception of the workspace and perceptions of well-being and job performance. If there is a significant relationship between the perception of the work space and the perception of well-being at work and between the perception of well-being and job performance, it is not the case between the perception of space and job performance. However, we wonder if the well-being of the employee may be a mediator of the relation between workspace and job performance.

The performance of health workers in decentralised services in Uganda

This study investigated the performance of health workers in the decentralised services in Uganda in order to develop a management framework that may be used to improve performance. The study followed a mixed research methodology and was descriptive. The survey design was used to collect quantitative data by means of a structured questionnaire. Qualitative data was collected using a semi-structured interview guide. The study population for the quantitative strand comprised 276 health workers including doctors, clinical officers, and professional nurses working in four districts: Kumi, Mbale, Sironko and Tororo. The health workers were selected using stratified random sampling. The population for qualitative strand was health services managers (N=21) from the same districts. The managers were selected purposively. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS version 18.0, while qualitative data was coded and analysed manually. The findings revealed that the performance of health workers is generally affected by health systems and work environment related factors. The findings indicated that health workers are skilled, competent, and generally have positive attitudes and behaviours towards their clients. The study uncovered loop holes in performance management in the district health sectors. In most cases there is no target setting, no performance management planning, performance indicators are not clearly defined, and the schedules for performance measurement are not always followed. There is limited career progression and lack of functional performance feedback and rewarding mechanisms. Although health workers are committed, there is widespread political interference and nepotism in the district health sector management. Overall, the researcher is optimistic that if the proposed performance management framework is implemented, the performance of health workers might improve. / Health Studies / D. Litt. et Phil.
