It's Definitely Our Success: Children of Undocumented Immigrants in Higher Education

Cebreros, Alejandra 27 October 2016 (has links)
This study examines the ways in which the education of children of undocumented immigrants is impacted by their parents’ undocumented status as well as their personal documentation status. In this thesis, I shed light on the experiences of fifteen college students and alumni who are variously-documented, including: undocumented students, DACA students, and documented students with undocumented family members. Drawing on these experiences, I argue that students’ education is impacted by legal and social exclusion, family stress and psychosocial impacts, personal legal status, and a lack of services for undocumented students and children of undocumented immigrants in educational institutions. I also argue that mothers and other family members lessen these challenges by providing students with the support and encouragement to complete a higher education. I conclude this study by making specific recommendations for what K- higher education institutions can do to better serve undocumented and documented students within mixed-status families.

SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS PREPAREDNESS WHEN WORKING WITH MIXED-STATUS FAMILIES

Pacheco, Delia Ann, Pacheco, Brenda Carolina 01 June 2019 (has links)
This study focuses on the preparedness, and perception of Bachelor and Master of Social Work students in a California State University when encountering with clients in mixed-status families. The students were contacted via school email and provided with a questionnaire that inquired their preparedness when assisting undocumented clients, and their families. The results of the study concluded that majority of the students have encountered working with mixed-status families either in a personal or professional setting. Though, the data collected indicated that there are several factors that have impacted their knowledge of how to assist and provide linkage to other resources to undocumentedindividuals, and their families. The majority of respondents reported having an insufficiency knowledge of resources on the topic. These outcomes suggest that the Schools of Social Work should consider literature on Mixed-status families for Social Work students to provide appropriate services for them. A quantitative method was used to analyze and collect information from the students.

The Relationship of Immigration Status with Mexican Immigrant Maternal and Child Well-Being in the United States

Lopez, Anayeli January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Thomas M. Crea / Thesis advisor: Ruth E. Prado P. / Undocumented Mexican immigrants and their children make up a considerable proportion of the United States population at risk of mental health problems. Yet research to inform the mental health of undocumented Mexican immigrants and their children is very limited, and the majority of existing studies are qualitative; both types of studies are needed to understand better the relationship among different factors that may influence the mental health of immigrant parents and their children. This three-paper dissertation analyzed the implications of parents’ and children’s immigration status for the mothers' mental health and the children’s behavioral problems. It utilized subsamples from the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey (L.A. FANS), a survey representative of Los Angeles County, which includes direct measures of respondent’s immigration status. Paper 1 used path analysis to examine the relationship between the mothers' immigration status and major depression, and whether self-efficacy served as a mediator. Surprisingly, undocumented mothers had fewer symptoms of major depression compared with Mexican American and documented mothers. However, when self-efficacy mediated the relationship, immigration status lowered self-efficacy, increasing symptoms of major depression. Paper 2 used hierarchical regression analysis to examine the associations of mother’s and children’s immigration status with children’s behavioral problems. Immigration status was significantly associated with internalizing problems, but not with externalizing problems. For children in mixed-status families, the influence of immigration status on internalizing problems was more severe for children in middle childhood compared to children in early childhood. The influence of immigration status on internalizing problems was more severe for adolescents compared to children in early childhood and middle childhood. Also, the mother’s self-efficacy ameliorated the negative influence of immigration status on children’s behavioral problems (internalizing and externalizing) for girls in undocumented and mixed-status families. Finally, marital conflict exacerbated the negative effects of immigration status on children’s behavioral problems (internalizing and externalizing) for girls in undocumented and mixed-status families. Paper 3 utilized path analysis to examine the mediating role of mother’s mental health (e.g., major depression and self-efficacy) and parenting stress in the relationship between immigration status and children’s behavioral problems. It was found that immigration status influences the mothers' mental health and parenting stress, which in turn influences the behavioral functioning of children in middle childhood and adolescents. Results of these three studies will help inform practice and policy by addressing critical gaps in the literature impacting a growing number of undocumented immigrant mothers and their children. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. "Convivendo com a diferença: o impacto da sorodiscordância na vida afetivo-sexual de portadores do HIV/AIDS" / Living with the Difference: the impact of serodiscordance on the affective and sexual life of HIV/aids patients.

Reis, Renata Karina 01 July 2004 (has links)
The appearance of antiretroviral therapy brought about a significant increase in the survival and quality of life of HIV/aids patients. This new reality entails new possibilities for living with aids, one of which is serodiscordance. This study aimed to describe and analyze the impact of serodiscordance on the affective and sexual life of HIV/aids patients whose heterosexual partner has a different HIV status. The concept of vulnerability was used as a theoretical reference framework. This study was carried out at the specialized HIV/aids care clinic of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto Medical School Hospital das Clínicas, Brazil. Data were collected through individual interviews, which were recorded. Data organization and analysis was based on Prose Analysis by André (1983), which gave rise to nine themes: perception of the invulnerability, the discovery of HIV seropositivity, infection way, revealing the diagnosis, sexuality in mixed-status couples after discovering HIV/aids infection, vulnerability of the seronegative partner, use the condom; reproductive health, relationship. After discovering seropositivity in one of the partners, mixed-status couples face countless challenges and need to develop coping strategies for difficulties related to sexual activities, maintaining safe sex and living with a seronegative partner. Not only the couple is responsible for these difficulties. Health professionals should assume their social responsibility in facing the challenges imposed by serodiscordance. We observed that seronegative partners have to be included in care activities, and that mixed-status couples deserve specific attention from health services. The lack of specific health services for mixed-status couples is one of the factors responsible for increased vulnerability of the seronegative partner, when (s)he does not appear in care and no adequate treatment is given to serodiscordance-related issues. We point towards the need for care alternatives with a view to promoting a change in current care practices, which focus on the biological model. Care for these persons has to be realized by interdisciplary teams and consider the affective and sexual aspects caused by serodiscordance, which leads to the need for increased training and awareness of the health professionals involved. The nursing team plays an important role in HIV/aids care and its actions have to go beyond clinical and therapeutic aspects and including sexuality, prevention and safe sex maintenance, which reveal to be important risk components in mixed-status couples.

Matthew’s inclusive community : a narratological and social scientific reading

Shin, In-Cheol 26 May 2005 (has links)
The nature of Matthew’s community has been investigated by a number of scholars in the past and present. Currently, the debate centers on whether the Matthean community was a society with egalitarian structure consisting of equals. This study has also focused on the social structure of the Matthean community. The basic question is whether (or not) the Matthean community was an egalitarian group in an ancient advanced agrarian society in the first century Mediterranean world. If so (or if not so) does the Matthean community lack a hierarchical structure? This study suggests that the Matthean community was not an egalitarian structured society. The term “egalitarian” would not be applicable to the Matthean community, because the term “egalitarian” is a modern Western political and philosophical concept, which has its origin in the French revolutionary movement. The Matthean community was rather a socially stratified group in an ancient advanced agrarian society in the first century in the Mediterranean world. Consequently, the Matthean community was not a society with an egalitarian structure; rather, it was an inclusively structured society. This study has utilized two methodologies. Firstly, the investigation uses narrative criticism to analyse Matthew’s intention of his inclusive structured community depicted through Jesus’ inclusive ministry. This methodology considers the narrator’s point of view concerning Jesus’ ministry as he journeyed from Galilee to Jerusalem. Secondly, this research uses social scientific criticism to explore the Matthean text in order to consider Jesus’ ministry. This approach on Jesus ministry was reflected in the context of Matthew’s inclusive structure community. The Matthean community was socially mixed, consisting of Israelites and Gentiles. It was written in the years between 80 to 90 CE. The city of Antioch was the most likely setting for Matthew’s inclusive community, however hierarchically structured. A narrative point of view reading of Matthew’s story shows that Jesus was the protagonist involved in an inclusive ministry in accordance to God’s plan for the salvation of all people. The Israelite leaders are antagonistic to Jesus’ ministry, and they exclude social and religious outcasts. The disciples of Jesus help Jesus with his inclusive ministry, while the crowds help the Israelite leaders. However, there are times when the disciples do not understand Jesus’ inclusive ministry. The audience of Jesus’ inclusive ministry was the crowd. This inclusive ministry shifts from Galilee to Jerusalem and his ministry comes into conflict with the ideology of the Israelite leaders. Jesus’ focus was inclusive but the Israelite leaders were exclusive. Matthew’s depiction of Jesus’ inclusive mission completed with his death on the cross. A social scientific approach reveals that Matthew’s interpretation of Jesus’ inclusive ministry is directed to social and religious outcasts. His ministry includes sick people, sinners and tax collectors who are from the lower classes within a hierarchically structured society. Jesus’ ministry was reflected in the context of Matthew’s inclusive community. This study shows that the Matthean community was not a society with an egalitarian structure; rather, it was an inclusively structured society within a hierarchical context. / Thesis (PhD (New Testament))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / New Testament Studies / unrestricted
