Uberaba turned to be the center of public attention when the famous medium Chico Xavier arrived in the city, in 1959. Since then, the number of spiritist centers has quintupled and the practices of assistance have increased. Inside the doctrinaire universe of Spiritism, charity occupies a privileged place because it is essential for the spiritual evolution. Therefore, all spiritist centers do social assistance as a way of practicing charity. The main goal of this research was to identify and to understand the means of management of Spiritist Social Assistance in Uberaba-MG. Chanlat (1996) understands means of management as a set of administrative practices implemented by the organization to achieve their objectives. This research was guided by Grounded Theory principles (GLASER; STRAUSS, 1967), qualitative research method in which exists a close relationship between data gathering, data analysis and the substantive theory that develops as a consequence. Intensive interview was the main instrument of data gathering. Recording lectures as well. Spiritist organizations documents were also researched. The technique of analyzing and interpreting data used was the Content Analysis (BAUER, 2002) supported by the software Atlas/TI. They both led to the categories of analysis: Chico Xavier, Uberaba and the spontaneity , Without charity there is no salvation and Relationships with the world of Cesar . As a result of this analysis, we realized that, in the case of Uberaba, the traditionalism, linked to Chico Xavier, prevails and the spontaneity is a principle which is in the core of a constant confrontation between dichotomies freewill and determinism, spiritual and material, human and divine that constitute the spiritist universe in Uberaba. They trust in good spirits , or spiritual guides , or superior spirits , or spirituality whose are the orientation leaders to the tasks of assistance, in contradiction to the spontaneity quality because the human actions are the result of deliberate spiritual influence. Nevertheless, the spiritists managers in Uberaba assure and reassure the spontaneous feature of the spiritist social assistance management. There is also a clear resistance to assimilate the dictates of the World of Cesar human laws and rules because they believe that the divine commandments are sufficiently good. / Uberaba passou a ser foco das atenções públicas em função da presença do famoso médium Chico Xavier, a partir de 1959, quintuplicando o número de centros espíritas e reforçando as práticas assistenciais ali realizadas. Dentro do universo doutrinário do Espiritismo, a caridade ocupa um lugar privilegiado, pois é essencial para a evolução espiritual e, por esse motivo, todos os centros espíritas realizam atividades de assistência social como meio de se praticar a caridade. O objetivo de pesquisa foi identificar e compreender o modo de gestão da Assistência Social Espírita em Uberaba- MG. Entende-se modo de gestão como um conjunto de práticas administrativas executadas pela organização visando a atingir os seus objetivos (CHANLAT, 1996). O trabalho foi guiado pelos princípios da Grounded Theory (GLASER; STRAUS, 1967), método de pesquisa qualitativa em que existe um estreito relacionamento entre a coleta e análise de dados e a teoria, substantiva, que se desenvolve como conseqüência. A entrevista em profundidade foi o principal instrumento de coleta de dados, assim como gravação de palestras. Foram pesquisados, também, documentos das organizações espíritas. A técnica de análise e interpretação de dados utilizada foi a Análise de Conteúdo (BAUER, 2002) com auxílio do software Atlas/TI, que possibilitaram encontrar aos poucos as categorias de análise mais apropriadas: Chico Xavier, Uberaba e a espontaneidade , Fora da caridade não há salvação e Relações com o mundo de César . Como resultado dessa análise, percebeu-se que, no caso uberabense, o tradicionalismo, ligado à figura de Chico Xavier, prevalece e se tem como princípio a espontaneidade, estando esta no cerne de um constante confronto entre dicotomias livre arbítrio e determinismo, espiritual e material, humano e divino que povoam o universo espírita de Uberaba. Reforça-se a confiança nos bons espíritos , ou guias espirituais , ou espíritos superiores , ou espiritualidade , que são orientadores, norteadores dos trabalhos assistenciais. Contraditoriamente, portanto, à qualidade de espontâneo, pois as ações humanas são fruto de deliberada influência espiritual. De qualquer forma, os dirigentes espíritas uberabenses afirmam e reafirmam o caráter espontâneo da gestão da assistência social espírita e há uma nítida resistência em assimilar os ditames do Mundo de César leis, regras, normas dos homens por acreditarem que os preceitos divinos são suficientemente bons. / Mestre em Administração
