Constructing a regional building culture in Greater Yellowstone : potentials and limitations

Swearingen, Marshall John 23 June 2011 (has links)
What are the potentials and limitations of constructing a regional building culture in and around Bozeman, Montana? Starting with the theories of architectural regionalism, this thesis takes a pragmatic approach to synthesizing several topics—history, geography, technology, economy—and situating them within Bozeman’s specific context in order to assess the implications of constructing a regional building culture. This potential shift is viewed primarily as technological, but with the understanding that technology is not just objects but also a set of practices and knowledge embedded in the co-evolving structures of society. The main outcome of the research is therefore recommended points of action for builders, designers, and policymakers that would encourage the development of regional building practices, which are shown to have technological and economic benefits when compared with universal technologies. Limitations are discussed in terms of barriers to realizing these benefits, as well as possible problems and contradictions. To start, the various discourses of architectural regionalism are summarized to provide a theoretical footing. Next comes an overview of the history of Bozeman’s building culture, with an emphasis on how universal technologies and their related cultural assumptions have obscured the potential for regional building practices. This leads to the question of defining the region, which is taken up first in an analytical way, then more concretely by using geographic information systems (GIS) to map the region’s climate. Analysis of climatic variables suggests technological practices that could reduce consumption of fossil-fuel energy. These are discussed conjointly with a critique of regional materials and an assessment of how these regionally appropriate alternatives might emerge within conventional technological systems. The economic implications of regional technologies are discussed in terms of benefits and draw-backs. Finally, all these findings are put within the context of information gathered through interviews, which leads to concluding recommendations for action and critical reflections. / text

Amphibian recruitment success at a landscape scale

Bol, Leslie D. January 2003 (has links)
Size fluctuations in amphibian populations at single breeding sites are related to variations in recruitment from the larval stage. However, overall patterns of abundance should be related to the pattern of recruitment success at the many sites where breeding occurs over a landscape. Recruitment patterns for six amphibian species, Ambystoma laterale, A. maculatum, Bufo americanus, Hyla versicolor, Pseudacris crucifer and Rana sylvatica, were investigated at multiple sites within the 10 km 2 Mont St. Hilaire nature reserve during 2001 and 2002. Amphibians bred at eighteen sites but recruitment occurred at only 8 and 11 sites in each year, respectively. Hydroperiod and predation were the most important determinants of recruitment. Four species suffered multiple recruitment failures both years. However, when sites were considered collectively, recruitment was successful for all species because of asynchronous recruitment patterns across heterogeneous sites. Amphibian population dynamics may be stochastic at any single site but recruitment success at multiple sites is a plausible predictor of abundance and trends in regional population persistence.

Le comportement marginal dans les Chroniques du Plateau Mont-Royal /

Pitt, Peter V. January 1991 (has links)
It is the intention of this memoire to study the behaviour of the principal characters in the Chroniques du plateau Mont-Royal by Michel Tremblay. This will be done through an analysis of the relationship between them and certain archetypes suggested by the reading of relevant works by C. G. Jung and his followers, in particular those concerning the archetype of the mother. The absence of the father exerts a considerable influence on this behaviour, which, as a result, becomes non-conformist, abhorrent or neurotic. Homosexuality, transvestitism, alcoholism, sexual obsession and obesity are manifestations of the difficulty experienced by a people which has been separated from its traditional rural roots, and forced to adapt to a sterile city of concrete. It is only in the realisation of the nature of its malaise, that this part of the urban population can begin to settle in its new environment.

Voices from the Little Bighorn : George Custer, Marcus Reno, Wooden Leg, and Winfield Edgerly : a collection of essays and stories from the field

Mauer, Lola R. January 2003 (has links)
This collection is not meant to be a history book, but instead a creative work highlighting four participants in the battle of the Little Bighorn. Included, are actual events and people of the famous 1876 war between the American Indians and the U.S. 7"' Cavalry. Historical fiction is entwined within each piece to give readers a clear picture of what occurred on that June day. For instance, the author creates dialogue between the characters, while not knowing what each person actually said. Years of research has provided the author with insight into the characters, while assisting the National Park Service as a summer trail guide at the Little Bighorn helped the author to set each scene for readers. The authors repeated experiences at the battlefield has helped to form the choices made in these stories. Evidence found since the historic battle ended, and items discovered now, stress the importance that the search must go on. The stories of Custer, Reno, Wooden Leg and Edgerly deserve to be told in a contemporary way while remaining historically accurate. Educating others about the significant battle and how it shaped the American West is essential. / Department of English
