É nesse contexto que o presente trabalho analisa a obra do escravo mestre pintor setecentista, partindo de uma visão geral da Ordem Beneditina, limitando, gradativamente, o assunto até chegar à obra do artista, sem, no entanto, esquecer seu contexto vital, que é a espiritualidade beneditina vivida na Congregação Beneditina do Brasil. Não obstante registros históricos da atuação de Antônio Teles na policromia de 16 esculturas em madeira, executadas por outros artistas ao longo do século XVIII, para a ornamentação da Igreja Abacial de Nossa Senhora do Monserrate do Rio de Janeiro, a presente pesquisa culmina com a análise iconográfica de dois desenhos a bico de pena, assinados pelo escravo mestre pintor. / Heir of Jewish culture, in which is the Word Revelation, Christian spirituality, not without hesitation, adopetd and developed images, as catechetic instruments. ln this context, this paper analyzes the work of eighteenth-century slave master painter, starting with an overview of the Benedictine Order, limiting, gradually, the matter until the artist's work, but without forgetting its context, which is spirituality Benedictine lived in the Benedictine Congregation of Brazil. Despite the historical record of the performance of Antonio Teles in 16 polychrome on wood sculptures, performed by other artists throughout the eighteenth century, for the ornamentation of Abbey Church Our Lady of Monserrate do Rio de Janeiro, this culminates with the iconographic analysis two pen design drawings, signed by the slave master painter.
