A PERFORMANCE GUIDE TO GABRIEL FAURÉ’S LA CHANSON D’ÈVE, OP. 95

Klopfenstine-Wear, Sarah E 01 January 2014 (has links)
In this study, background information, International Phonetic Alphabet pronunciations, poetic translations, and musical analyses of the ten songs that comprise Gabriel Fauré’s La Chanson d’Ève, Op. 95 are provided. Included is the relationship between his original poetry and Fauré’s resultant song cycle. Additionally, a portion is dedicated to an overview of the registers of the mezzo-soprano voice, and it specifically addresses who is best suited to perform La Chanson d’Ève. This document looks at the vocal challenges presented for the mezzo-soprano voice within each song, particularly the subject of vowel modification as it relates to the IPA pronunciation guide. Finally, by gathering all the pertinent information on Fauré’s La Chanson d’Ève into one document, this performance guide creates a succinct tool for singers and teachers in the vocal studio.

AN EXAMINATION OF A CONDUCTOR’S PERFORMANCE PREPARATION OF THE MENDELSSOHN VIOLIN CONCERTO IN E MINOR

Seebacher, Robert J 01 January 2014 (has links)
The music of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-47) has earned a prominent position in the orchestral repertoire. One of his greatest works, and certainly one of the most performed, is his Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. The work enjoys much popularity with, and recognition by, soloists, orchestras, and conductors alike. Even with its fame and familiarity, it remains a work that must be carefully studied and prepared by the conductor. This document presents an examination of a conductor’s performance preparation of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. The purpose of this examination is to equip the conductor with a depth of knowledge that will yield rehearsals and performances of the concerto that are stylistically appropriate, well informed, and efficient. Major sections include an examination of the concerto’s 1844 and 1845 versions and available performance materials, tempo selection and execution, size, balance and composition of the orchestra, stylistic traits, and aspects of performance practice.

ITALIAN AND SPANISH INFLUENCE ON SELECTED WORKS OF MEXICAN COMPOSERS: MARÍA GREVER, IGNACIO FERNÁNDEZ ESPERÓN “TATA NACHO,” AND AGUSTÍN LARA

Castillo, Manuel M 01 January 2014 (has links)
The last decades of the 19th Century and the first decades of the 20th Century encompass a revolutionary movement worldwide. The growth and advances throughout all disciplines of study and especially the collaboration across Literature, Music, Performing Arts, Culture and Politics became stronger and more evident than ever before. As the Mexican Revolution (1910) developed in frightening fights, the country became increasingly insecure and violent. It was the duty of the living artist to create pathways to escape reality, embellishing the surroundings with its music, paintings and poetry. This climate is what paved the way to the bohemian living-style that developed in the main cities gaining power and acceptance, especially in Mexico City. Maria Grever, Tata Nacho and Agustín Lara represent a handful of composers/performers who wrote in the style of canciones contributing to the ideal of stability, hope and love in all forms and fashions. They represent the complexity of an era thru an outpouring of songs, depicting the romanticism of Mexico's ever changing times. They are also key figures for the growth and expansion of Mexican music throughout the world, aided by the technological advances such as the first recordings and radio broadcasting.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Arquivototal.pdf: 2281149 bytes, checksum: d14380e3a4dd073ce04f00366150d758 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-09-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This study investigated and analyzed the existence of music performance anxiety among music students of the Universidade Federal da Paraiba (UFPB), in the context of instrument music classes. In this survey 28 students coming from pre-college, undergraduate and graduate music program from UFPB took part, in a total of four classes coordinated by faculty members of the UFPB Music Department. As a research procedure psychological tests that assessed levels of state-trait anxiety, music performance anxiety and participant observation were applied. They were undertaken during the semester final recitals of each class. From the analysis, comparison and correlation of the results of psychological tests and participant observation, we found levels of state-trait anxiety above what was predicted by normative samples and consistent with those of studies conducted in other parts of the world, with orchestra musicians and professional choirs. We also found levels of anxiety in music performance similar to existing research, and clear physical signs and behavioral of musical performance anxiety. The analysis of research variables: gender, education, age, occupation and level of demand confirmed some of the assumptions in the literature and brought new findings, which opened space for further discussion and research. These results confirm the hypothesis that anxiety in music performance is a widespread phenomenon that can affect musicians of any age, level or technical training, from students to professionals. Therefore, our data are indicative of the existence of actual music performance anxiety among music students of the UFPB, alerting us to the occurrence of a factor detrimental not only to performance, but also to the health and psychological well-being of musicians.

Hearing Miles Davis: A Pedagogy of Autobiographical Performance and Jazz

McRae, Chris 01 May 2011 (has links)
This dissertation argues for a relational ethic of listening that emphasizes the pedagogical role of the listener as a student in dialogically hearing, producing, and responding to the other. This ethic of listening works to hear possibilities amongst differences, and to ethically account for and learn from the cultural, historical, and embodied differences of the other as they are produced relationally amongst macro-structures and micro-practices. In order to develop this ethic of listening, I pay specific attention to my solo autobiographical performance, Miles away from "The Cool," in which I present my autobiographical and musical reading of the autobiography of trumpet player Miles Davis, Miles. This performance and my research regarding the music, life story, and cultural significance of Davis functions as an example for my development of a listening centered approach to pedagogy. Listening to jazz and the music of Davis provides an approach to hearing possibilities as they are enabled and constrained by larger macro-structures and specific micro-practices. I argue this approach to listening can be extended to research regarding autobiography and geographic location. Listening to autobiography and location can enable a critical and ethical understanding of the ways history, context, and power play on bodies in jazz, autobiography, location and autobiographical performance. After explaining this relational ethic of listening in terms of autobiography and jazz, I make the case for listening as a performative act in which as listeners we are always students to the other. Performative listening is a critical communicative act that works to ethically and pedagogically hear and learn from the other. Performative listening emerges from a relational ethic of listening, and it is a productive pleasure that works to hear possibilities in and amongst differences.

Ansiedade na performance musical : causas, sintomas e estratégias de estudantes de flauta

Cunha, Andre Sinico da January 2013 (has links)
This research focuses on investigating causes, symptoms, and coping strategies for music performance anxiety of flute students from music colleges in the performance of an unaccompanied flute work in recital of evaluative character. The procedures of collection and analyses of data occurred as in the study by Siw Nielsen (1999), that is, through the behavioral observation of the participants, and verbal reports by semi-structured interview. Both situations were recorded in audio and video. The data were analyzed in four steps, the first and fourth quantitatively, and the others qualitatively. The first step aimed to determine the profile of the participants of this research, and at the ending of data crossing the total number of causes, symptoms, and coping strategies. The other steps sought to identify causes, symptoms, and coping strategies through the behavioral observation, and verbal reports analyses. Finally, we performed data crossing for comparison between the two data analyses, and arrived at conclusions about causes, symptoms, and strategies of flute students to cope with music performance anxiety, and comparison between causes and symptoms of anxiety in clarinet players.
