Deficient musical literacy in students seems to be a pressing issue in music education research on a national and international scale. This qualitative study followed a case study design with action research elements within an ethnographic setting. Data was collected by means of passive observation of 23 lectures of an aural training course with 20 first year music students at the University of Pretoria and recording of field notes by the observer during these lectures. The aim of the study was to understand the development processes that are integral to developing musical literacy in young adults. The study specifically investigated the effectiveness of Gordon’s audiation development framework in first year music students’ aural training. To achieve this main goal, the study investigated challenges affecting audiation development that arose during first year aural training instruction, and how Gordon’s audiation framework was used as a guide for audiation development and instruction. Challenges related to active participation, vocal coordination, reconciling sound with tonal syllables, reconciling sound with theory, and the use of notation were noted during the observation period. Gordon’s framework encompassing the definition and classification of audiation and Gordon’s music learning theory formed the basis for audiation development in the aural training course. This framework also served as a guide for aural training instruction in the specific areas where challenges relating to the main themes arose, with interventions to audiation development challenges applied according to Gordon’s recommendations within the scope of the outcomes stipulated for the aural training programme. Although the notion that the music of Jean Sibelius portrays the nature and landscape of Finland has long dominated his reception, the more precise ways in which these aspects are musically expressed have remained relatively unexamined. In an attempt to further explore and deepen the knowledge of the natural world’s musical mediation in the composer’s art, the aim of this essay is to define therepresentation of nature and landscape in Sibelius’s seven symphonies. The two central questions of the investigation are: What kind of nature is evoked and how can it be characterized? Whichmusical features/compositional techniques are used in order to produce this nature?      The basic methods applied are those of history and music analysis, the former striving to construct a picture of Sibelius’s own relationship with nature by emanating from specific sources (such as the composer’s diary) in combination with reception and literature, this part of the essay forming a necessary platform for the execution of the latter. Drawing on the depiction of nature in several of the composer’s tone poems, many of them with titles or programs referring to the realms of the natural world and thus adequate as a sort of reference point, I have in the musical analysis of the representation of nature in the symphonies proceeded from several nature-related themes or ’topics’ such as the forest, winds and storms, landscape constituting a broader, subdivided suchtopic. However, aspects associated with or somewhat connected to nature are also included, for example that of light, darkness and inwardness.      The results of this study show that the nature evoked in Sibelius’s music is a highly multifaceted and conflicted one, portraying rich spectra of various environmental shapes and atmospheres. Moreover, his art also demonstrates nature’s continual change over time as well as presents ’humanized’ landscapes in which a narrative ’voice’ or viewer is actively integrated. As a whole, Sibelius’s nature comes forth as decisively elemental and unreflective, mirroring the composer’s own, all-encompassing view of his surroundings.      Although applying greatly differing expressional tools and compositional techniques, the symphonies’ musical portrayal of the natural world is largely based on four main features; sound/ timbre (rendering a nature scene its particular mood or color), orchestral texture (providing a structural ’space’ of landscape), gestures (illustration of movement) and formal principles(Sibelius’s own compositional methods of rotational form and teleological genesis, constructing certain processes related to nature such as storm and meditative withdrawal). Frequently, however, it’s the specific combination of two or more of these components that produce the particular nature scene or event.

Den kvalitativa studien behandlar kreativa lärandeprocesser i musikskapande inom ramen för en undervisningspraktik i årskurs 9. Detta sker både utifrån en musiklärares undervisning och elevernas upplevelser av densamma. Metodologiska utgångspunkter för studien är deltagande observation, halvstrukturerade intervjuer och en självvärderingsenkät med öppna frågor. Som teoretiskt ramverk används dels Martin Fautleys komponerandemodell, vilken belyser komponerande som en lärandeaktivitet i åtta steg, dels Lars Lindströms portfoliomodell som med process och produktkriterier belyser betydelsefulla kunskapskvaliteter i skapandeprocesser. Av studiens resultat framgår att undervisning i musikskapande där läraren betonar process lika mycket som produkt får eleverna förutsättningar att reflektera över sitt eget och andras skapande. Genom ett sådant arbetssätt kan eleverna utveckla sin förståelse om skapandeprocessens olika faser och om olika aspekter hos den skapade produkten. Studien visar också att processvärdering kan användas som ett analysverktyg dels för att få insyn i elevernas kognitiva processer under en skapandeprocess, dels för att uppmärksamma och sätta ord på den tysta kunskapsdimension som processkriterierna belyser och som annars lätt kan förbises. Vidare förefaller det som att kriterier med nivåbeskrivningar är lämpliga att använda för att kartlägga och bedöma elevernas kunskapsutveckling i musikskapande samt för att främja till elevernas fortsatta lärande. I ett kollaborativt musikskapande utvecklar eleverna olika ämnesspecifika kunskapskvaliteter i musik, men också generella kompetenser, såsom kreativitet, samarbetsförmåga och digitalitet samt ett förhållningssätt som främjar entreprenörskap.

I uppsatsen analyseras musiken i Jan Troells film Så vit som en snö (2001). Det framgår att musiken är en viktig komponent i filmen. I filmen förekommer tidstypisk musik: visartade melodier, jazz och operettmelodier vilka framförs i olika slags arrangemang. Melodierna används för att skapa en narrativ "väv" i ljud- och musikläggningen. Flera melodier har en gemensam texttematik. Som en central ljudläggningsteknik används musikaliska teman. Musikinslagen karakteriseras som diegetiska, icke-diegetiska eller metadiegetiska. I uppsatsen skiljs vidare mellan strukturell, metaforisk och kontextuell funktion hos musikinslagen. Dessutom används begrepp som timbre och klangfärg för att beskriva musiken.

Studien syftar till att beskriva vad DIY-konserter betyder för Göteborg som musikstad.Studien har en geografisk avgränsning till arrangörer och föreningar i Göteborg, samt engenrebaserad avgränsning till rockmusik framförd av bandkonstellationer.Undersökningen är framtagen genom litteraturstudier och marxistisk analys baserad påmarxistisk och postmarxistisk teoribildning. Studien fokuserar på DIY-konsertens platsi Göteborgs musikliv idag, men tar historiska, kulturella och internationella jämförelseri beaktning för att ge en djupare förståelse för ämnet. Studiens resultat visar på deskillnader som finns mellan olika typer av rockkonsertevenemang i Göteborg ochdiskuterar dessa utifrån marxistisk teori.
