Whiteness and the Literary Imagination., Toni Morrison (1993) analyses two entities “blackness” and “whiteness” that permeate the society and literature of the United States. Blackness, through diverse rhetorical, narrative and symbolic literary edifices, reduces and devalues black people; while whiteness promotes and valorizes the beauty, culture, religion and customs that are designated as being white. The present study develops the investigation of whiteness and blackness in Brazilian literature. In Brazil, the white elite has used an ideology that presents a miscegenated, national image to unite the country; later using this image to promote Brazil as a racial democracy. However, our findings reveal that despite the promotion of miscegenated racial imagery, an esthetic has developed within Brazilian literature and other cultural practices that values the beauty, values and conduct connected with whiteness more than of those connected with blackness. The racially miscegenated, social and literary constructs are highly ambiguous, presenting this sphere as a transitory middle ground that both includes and excludes. In this study, we look at a small profile of Brazilian literary works that contribute to the construction of the blackness, whiteness and miscegenation entities, while also commenting on the development of opposing literary currents that deconstruct and counter the propagation of these entities. / Em sua monografia, Playing in the Dark. Whiteness and the Literary Imagination (Brincando no escuro. Brancura e o imaginário literário), Toni Morrison (1993) analisa duas entidades, blackness (negrura) e whiteness (brancura), que permeiam a sociedade e a literatura estadunidenses. Por meio de diversas técnicas retóricas, narrativas e simbólicas, a negrura inferioriza e desvaloriza as pessoas negras, enquanto a brancura promove e valoriza a beleza, a cultura, a religião e os costumes, forjados como sendo dos brancos. Neste trabalho, investigam-se a brancura e a negrura num pequeno perfil da literatura brasileira. No Brasil, a elite branca tem utilizado uma ideologia que apresenta uma imagem nacional mestiça para unir o país. Essa imagem mestiça foi utilizada para promover a concepção do Brasil como uma nação em que vigora a democracia racial. Entretanto, nesta pesquisa, revela-se que, apesar da forjada identidade mestiça, uma estética tem se desenvolvido dentro da literatura brasileira e de outras práticas culturais que valorizam a beleza e a cultura entendidas como brancas, mais do que as forjadas como sendo dos negros. A concepção literária e social do mestiço e da mestiçagem é altamente ambígua, apresentando-se como um espaço indefinido e transitório, que inclui enquanto exclui. A fim de fazer reflexões sobre a construção de brancura, negrura e mestiçagem no contexto brasileiro, analisa-se uma pequena seleção de obras que contribui para essas construções, enquanto se nota, também, o surgimento de uma contraliteratura que desconstrói essas entidades.
