Cultural representations of the Moors Murderers and Yorkshire Ripper cases

This thesis examines written, audio-visual and musical representations of real-life British serial killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady (the ‘Moors Murderers’) and Peter Sutcliffe (the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’), from the time of their crimes to the present day, and their proliferation beyond the cases’ immediate historical‐legal context. Through the theoretical construct ‘Northientalism’ I interrogate such representations’ replication and engagement of stereotypes and anxieties accruing to the figure of the white working-class ‘Northern’ subject in these cases, within a broader context of pre‐existing historical trajectories and generic conventions of Northern and true crime representation. Interrogating changing perceptions of the cultural functions and meanings of murderers in late--‐capitalist socio--‐cultural history, I argue that the underlying structure of true crime is the counterbalance between the exceptional and the everyday, in service of which its second crucial structuring technique – the depiction of physical detail – operates. Applying the theories of David Schmid and Lisa Downing to a new range of figures and artefacts I demonstrate ways true crime can expose and explore the unequal power relations inherent in capitalism, both constructing the figure of the criminal as – and uncoupling that figure from a mythology that renders them – falsely ontologically separate from normalised forms of violence.

The Destruction Of A City Myth In Late Modern Turkish Cinema

The thesis attempts at providing a critical evaluation of the city as the mythological site of modernity. For that purpose, highlighting such special nature of the urban context as it finds expression by the cinematic medium, what is aimed at is the analysis of, first, the mythical dimensions of modern urban life as the prime site of enthusiasm and spirit with its fleeting impressions and changing images, secondly, the (re)creation of the city myth through cinema as an elaborate perceptive vehicle for a specific way of picturing and enframing the cityscape and, lastly the representation of the destruction of such myth. In this way, it will also be possible to point out concretely that the city experience of the modern individual simultaneously embodies fascination and horror, hope and despair. In order to explain the situation of the modern individual in the big city, Odysseus&rsquo / s encounter with mythological forces in ancient world are taken as a parable in the footsteps of Adorno and Horkheimer&rsquo / s allegoric interpretation of Homer&rsquo / s Odyssey. Specifically speaking, the cinematic representation of Istanbul-myth and the destruction of this myth in Turkish cinema of the nineties will be examined through three prominent examples in the light of the above theoretical considerations.

Improvement and the Scottish rural estate : Sir Archibald Grant at Monymusk, 1715-1778

The purpose of this study is ultimately to analyze the influence of cultural attitudes on the treatment of the Scottish estate in the first half of the 18th century (c.1715 – c.1776), making particular reference to the ideology of improvement, through the use of Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk as a case study. Grant’s improvement of his estate is not understood as literally agricultural or economic development alone, but as a complex ideological commitment to the transformation of land, landscape and society. Whilst Grant of Monymusk has been discussed with reference to economic improvement, the relationship between his role as a publically acknowledged improver and his patronage of art and architecture, as well as his attempts at publication, has not been subject to similar interest. This thesis uses an innovative interdisciplinary approach which draws on archaeological as well as art historical methodologies. It discusses a wider range of estate commissions, in particular Grant’s patronage of the portrait artists John Smibert and William Robertson, the poet John Ogilvie, his commission of the architectural surveyors Alexander Jaffray and Robert Robinson, as well as his work to construct planned villages at Kirktown of Monymusk and Archiestown. The thesis attempts to place these commissions within the context of recent studies of improvement which emphasize its role as an ideology with cultural implications. The use of an individual case study allows for a more in depth discussion of specific reactions to historical and ideological change, providing a narrative of a specific site and thus creating an individual response towards broader cultural and scientific developments.

Computergestützte Simulationsschnittstelle – Optimierte Systementwicklung in der Mechatronik

Das Verbinden der Konstruktions- mit der Simulationsdisziplin für Mehrkörpersimulationen ermöglicht es, Produkte in der Konstruktionsumgebung zu gestalten und anschließend in der Simulationsumgebung unter gewünschten Einflüssen auszulegen. Disziplinübergreifende Kommunikation zwischen entsprechenden Softwareprodukten erfolgt meist indirekt, manuell und unter Integritätsverlusten. Zwischen verschiedenen CAD Systemen und MATLAB besteht keine direkte Verbindung, weshalb die SANEON GmbH zusammen mit dem Institut für Flugsystemdynamik der Technischen Universität München eine Schnittstelle zum automatischen, bidirektionalen und integritätsverlustfreien Austausch zwischen den Systemen entwickelt hat. So kann in MATLAB und Simscape Multibody (früher SimMechanics) vollautomatisiert ein Mehrkörpersimulationsmodell auf Basis eines CAD-Modells aufgebaut werden. Darüber hinaus können Daten zurück an die CAD-Umgebung gesendet werden und somit Daten bidirektional ausgetauscht werden. Das hieraus entstandene Alleinstellungsmerkmal des vollautomatisierten und bidirektionalen Austausches unserer Innovation ist ein Novum auf dem Markt. Mit CASIN (Computer Aided Simulation INterface) stellen wir eine neuartige Plattform bereit, die Ihnen den domänenübergreifenden Transfer von CAD-Daten zwischen Konstruktions- und Simulationsumgebung erlaubt. So kann auf Bauteil- und Baugruppeninformationen per Knopfdruck unmittelbar in MATLAB zugegriffen werden. Benutzerdefinierte CAD-Parameter können aus MATLAB heraus modifiziert werden. Somit ist die Grundlage für einen iterativen Datenaustausch zwischen den Disziplinen geschaffen.

In diesem Beitrag wird am Beispiel von Flanschverbindungen dargestellt, wie Simulations- und Berechnungsmodelle wissensbasiert aufgebaut und verknüpft werden können. Dies führt zu einer teilautomatisierten Auslegung. In einem weiteren Schritt wird eine Methode zur Optimierung der Flanschverbindung vorgestellt. Hierbei wurden Parameter identifiziert, die zur Optimierung geeignet sind. Die prototypische Implementierung der beiden Methoden erfolgte im CAD-System Siemens NX10 (Siemens PLM Software).

The social, political and economic determinants of a modern portrait artist, Bernard Fleetwood-Walker (1893-1965)

As the first major study of the portrait artist Bernard Fleetwood-Walker (1893-1965), this thesis locates the artist in his social, political and economic context, arguing that his portraiture can be seen as an exemplar of modernity. The portraits are shown to be responses to modern life, revealed not in formally avant-garde depictions, but in the subject-matter. Industrial growth, the increasing population, expanding suburbs, and a renewed interest in the outdoor life and popular entertainment are reflected in Fleetwood-Walker’s artistic output. The role played by exhibition culture in the creation of the portraits is analysed: developing retail theory affected gallery design and exhibition layout and in turn impacted on the size, subject matter and style of Fleetwood-Walker’s portraits. Emerging, and soon dominant, tabloid newspapers shaped content and language to attract readers, influencing the articulation of the reception of the artist’s work. This thesis also makes a contribution to the regional perspective, demonstrating the temporary co-existence of multiple, heterogeneous, modern art worlds. Throughout the thesis the relevance of economic factors is emphasised, reappraising the Marxist theory of modern art and concluding that a more complex economic description is required to provide a sensitive and insightful analysis of art history.

The cultural history of the bagpipe in Britain, 1680-1840

Bagpipes and pipers, as cultural identifiers, are embedded within their national culture, charged with symbolisms. British authors have often viewed bagpipes as cultural icons, endowing them with connotations from devilish to virtuous, from rural to military. By analysing literary and artistic references one can perceive how the attitude towards the bagpipe changes with the evolution of Britain’s internal dynamics. Jacobitism contributed in casting a particular light on the bagpipe: it was the ‘voice of the rebellion’. In Scotland this constituted a reason for national pride, while in England the ‘common denominator’ of the Scot-enemy charged the bagpipe with the worst connotations. After Jacobitism stopped being seen as a threat, authors and artists came to view the bagpipe in a different light: the once negative icon was now imbued with ancestral values. The Scot – and the bagpipe by synecdoche – was romanticised: as James Boswell wrote, “The very Highland names, or the sound of a bagpipe, will stir my blood, and fill me with [...] a crowd of sensations with which sober rationality has nothing to do” (1785). The words of many Romantic authors contributed in characterising the instrument, endowing it with implications the influence of which is still relevant today.

Image Segmentation, Parametric Study, and Supervised Surrogate Modeling of Image-based Computational Fluid Dynamics

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / With the recent advancement of computation and imaging technology, Image-based computational fluid dynamics (ICFD) has emerged as a great non-invasive capability to study biomedical flows. These modern technologies increase the potential of computation-aided diagnostics and therapeutics in a patient-specific environment. I studied three components of this image-based computational fluid dynamics process in this work. To ensure accurate medical assessment, realistic computational analysis is needed, for which patient-specific image segmentation of the diseased vessel is of paramount importance. In this work, image segmentation of several human arteries, veins, capillaries, and organs was conducted to use them for further hemodynamic simulations. To accomplish these, several open-source and commercial software packages were implemented. This study incorporates a new computational platform, called InVascular, to quantify the 4D velocity field in image-based pulsatile flows using the Volumetric Lattice Boltzmann Method (VLBM). We also conducted several parametric studies on an idealized case of a 3-D pipe with the dimensions of a human renal artery. We investigated the relationship between stenosis severity and Resistive index (RI). We also explored how pulsatile parameters like heart rate or pulsatile pressure gradient affect RI. As the process of ICFD analysis is based on imaging and other hemodynamic data, it is often time-consuming due to the extensive data processing time. For clinicians to make fast medical decisions regarding their patients, we need rapid and accurate ICFD results. To achieve that, we also developed surrogate models to show the potential of supervised machine learning methods in constructing efficient and precise surrogate models for Hagen-Poiseuille and Womersley flows.
