This dissertation develops an optimization framework for conservation planning and illustrates the framework using case studies from Alaska, Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge (BCNWR) in central Texas, and Mexico. The common theme of the chapters is the use of optimization models to design conservation areas. Chapter 1 explains how the subsequent chapters are related to one another. Chapter 2 develops a framework for measuring how the cost of establishing conservation areas changes over time. When this method is applied to a data set on Mexican mammals, it is shown that twice as much land would have to be set aside to protect adequate mammal habitat today than would have been required in 1970 due to ongoing deforestation. Chapter 3 presents an optimization model for planning the establishment of conservation areas that incorporates forecasts of species' responses to global warming. The model is applied to analyze endangered birds and the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) on the Arctic coast of Alaska. Chapter 4 discusses the modeling of habitat for two endangered bird species, the Black{capped Vireo (Vireo atricapillus) and the Golden{cheekedWarbler (Dendroica chrysoparia), at BCNWR using a machine{learning algorithm (Maxent). These habitat models serve as part of the input for a one{stage optimization model for acquiring land to expand BCNWR. Chapter 5 uses graph theory to select corridors to establish connectivity between conservation areas in Mexico. Das Jahrgangsheft 2014 behandelt acht Themen aus der behördlichen und ehrenamtlichen Naturschutzarbeit. Der Zustand der Arten und Lebensraumtypen zur FFH-Richtlinie in Sachsen für 2007-2012 wird kurz dargestellt. Die »Lebendige Luppe« – ein Schlüsselprojekt für die Revitalisierung der Leipziger Auenlandschaft, die Ergebnisse des Bodenbrüterprojekts im Freistaat Sachsen, Schutz und Monitoring für das Birkhuhn im Erzgebirge, das Scheidenblütgras, die Amphibien und Reptilien des Bienitz in Leipzig sowie das Pilotprojekt »Betriebsplan Natur« werden vorgestellt. Die Änderungen bei Naturschutzgebieten in Sachsen werden erläutert. Der Mitteilungsteil enthält behördliche Informationen, Personalmeldungen, Literaturempfehlungen, Informationen zu Veranstaltungen, zum ehrenamtlichen Naturschutzdienst sowie zum Entwicklungsprogramm für den ländlichen Raum EPLR 2014-2020. Das Jahrgangsheft 2013 behandelt sieben Themen der ehrenamtlichen und behördlichen Naturschutzarbeit. Diese umfassen eine Einschätzung der Situation im ehrenamtlichen Naturschutzdienst, das »Naturschutzmonitoring in Sachsen«, das Bibermanagement im Naturpark Dübener Heide und »Pestrý-Bunt«, ein deutsch-tschechisches Projekt im Erzgebirge. Weiterhin wird über die Nachwuchsarbeit in der Oberlausitz, den Naturpark Zittauer Gebirge und Aktuelles zu Schutzgebieten in Sachsen berichtet. Der Mitteilungsteil enthält behördliche Informationen, Personalmeldungen, Literaturempfehlungen, Informationen zu Veranstaltungen und zum ehrenamtlichen Naturschutzdienst sowie rechtliche Hinweise zur Neufassung des Sächsischen Wassergesetzes. Die Junior-Ranger im Naturpark Dübener Heide, das Pilotprojekt »Ehrenamtliche Natura2000-Gebietsbetreuung« und das Studienarchiv Umweltgeschichte werden vorgestellt. Buchrezensionen bewerten die Veröffentlichungen »Sächsische Landschaften zwischen Dübener Heide und Zittauer Gebirge« und »Bergbaufolgelandschaften Deutschlands: Geobotanische Aspekte und Rekultivierung«.

This thesis describes PatchMapper, a model combining a population simulator based on individual behaviour, with a spatially explicit representation of a landscape. To investigate the robustness of the technique, representatives of three major taxa were modelled: the nuthatch (Sitta europaea L.), the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus Rafinesque) and the black hairstreak (Satyrium pruni L.). For the nuthatch and white-footed mouse, the performance of PatchMapper was compared with published models of the same species, but using different approaches, including, for the nuthatch, a comparison against observed numbers in a real landscape. To investigate the behaviour of the model, a sensitivity analysis was also undertaken. Written in Java, for portability, the model enables the user to select demographic and behavioural parameters via an interactive interface and includes a real-time (computer) display of the position of individuals during the simulation. Novel aspects of the model include perceptual range and field-of-view. Internally generated neutral landscapes can be used for modelling general cases, with imported digitised landscapes enabling specific study areas to be modelled. Habitat area and habitat quality dynamics can also be modelled. Dispersal flow diagrams can be generated, providing a visual explanation of the effects of landscape changes on inter-patch dispersal paths and populations in target patches. Performance compared well with published models, predicting a feasible match with observed numbers of nuthatches in the real landscape. Revealing predictable and realistic responses, the sensitivity analysis revealed that the model coding was valid. The value of specific case studies was illustrated, along with the dangers of relying on intuition when evaluating the response of species to habitat fragmentation. The individual-based SEPM approach was found to be best suited to the modelling of univoltine territorial species (such as nuthatch), with a single dispersal phase between fledging and territorial establishment. When demonstrating the model, the visual outputs proved particularly effective. Providing a set of features not seen in published models and enabling modelling at both local and landscape scales, PatchMapper is offered as a prediction tool for those engaged in activities such as biodiversity conservation and habitat management

Weitere Artikel widmen sich den Ergebnissen zur Fledermauskartierung, der Natura 2000-Gebietsbetreuung und den Änderungen im Bestand der Naturschutzgebiete.

Die Schriftenreihe "Naturschutzarbeit in Sachsen" erscheint als Anleitungs- und Informationsmaterial für ehrenamtliche Naturschutzbeauftragte und -helfer, Naturschutzverbände, Naturschutzbehörden und -fachbehörden sowie angrenzende Bereiche jährlich mit einem Heft. Als inhaltliche Schwerpunkte sollen Ergebnisse praktischer und theoretischer Arbeiten auf den Gebieten des Naturschutzes und der Landschaftspflege und kurze Erfahrungsberichte zur Darstellung gelangen.

Die Schriftenreihe "Naturschutzarbeit in Sachsen" erscheint als Anleitungs- und Informationsmaterial für ehrenamtliche Naturschutzbeauftragte und -helfer, Naturschutzverbände, Naturschutzbehörden und -fachbehörden sowie angrenzende Bereiche jährlich mit einem Heft.

Im Heft 2010 der »Naturschutzarbeit in Sachsen« berichten verschiedene Autoren über Themen aus der ehrenamtlichen und behördlichen Naturschutzarbeit. Mit zahlreichen Bildern wird über die naturnahe Umgestaltung von Fließgewässern, einen naturnahen Bachwald, die Naturschutzberatung in Sachsen, über Erfahrungen mit dem Amphibienschutz an Straßen, über Veränderungen der Agrarlandschaft und ihrer Vogelwelt sowie über rechtliche Regelungen zum Gehölzschutz informiert. Ehrenamtliche Naturschützer berichten von ihren Erfahrungen im Naturschutzdienst und der Jugendarbeit.
