___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: This dissertation deals with the relationship established between the female characters of the Tacitus‟s Annals, and the making of the Nero‟s image as an evil emperor. Identifying rhetorical devices relating to women, especially in the Annals‟s books XIII to XVI, as part of the narrative regarding the events of the Nero‟s principate (54-68 AD), aims to understand how Tacitus had used the female characters as a rhetorical tool to censure the emperor. These criticisms indicate moral values which the Roman society was embeded. In this way, we analyse how the interactions between the characters and the composition of exempla (examples) show models of vices and virtues. In order to substantiate our analysis, we will explore questions about the social and political conditions in which these women have lived, especially those who belonged to domus Caesarum (Caesars household).
