Algorithms, Protocols & Systems for Remote Observation Using Networked Robotic Cameras

Emerging advances in robotic cameras, long-range wireless networking, and distributed sensors make feasible a new class of hybrid teleoperated/autonomous robotic remote "observatories" that can allow groups of peoples, via the Internet, to observe, record, and index detailed activity occurred in remote site. Equipped with robotic pan-tilt actuation mechanisms and a high-zoom lens, the camera can cover a large region with very high spatial resolution and allows for observation at a distance. High resolution motion panorama is the most nature data representation. We develop algorithms and protocols for high resolution motion panorama. We discover and prove the projection invariance and achieve real time image alignment. We propose a minimum variance based incremental frame alignment algorithm to minimize the accumulation of alignment error in incremental image alignment and ensure the quality of the panorama video over the long run. We propose a Frame Graph based panorama documentation algorithm to manage the large scale data involved in the online panorama video documentation. We propose a on-demand high resolution panorama video-streaming system that allows on-demand sharing of a high-resolution motion panorama and efficiently deals with multiple concurrent spatial-temporal user requests. In conclusion, our research work on high resolution motion panorama have significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of image alignment, panorama video quality, data organization, and data storage and retrieving in remote observation using networked robotic cameras.

Networking in hard real time vehicle applications

Computer-based control systems are widely used in vehicle applications (e.g., aircraft, marine and automobile). The earlier forms of control systems were typified by a central computer connected to sub-systems using hard-wired point-to-point communication links. However, such systems suffered from several major drawbacks: (i) fault-tolerance problems, (ii) maintenance and cabling costs, and (iii) excessive cable weight. These problems were minimised by using master-slave networks with distributed control architecture. However, using such networks raises the question of fault-tolerance and integrity of the communication system. In view of this, efforts have been made to employ the architecture provided by the IEEE 802.4 Token Bus for real time control applications although the performance of the Token Bus is not adequate for applications where fast response times are required.

Robotic localization of hostile networked radio sources with a directional antenna

One of the distinguishing characteristics of hostile networked radio sources (e.g., enemy sensor network nodes), is that only physical layer information and limited medium access control (MAC) layer information of the network is observable. We propose a scheme to localize hostile networked radio sources based on the radio signal strength and communication protocol pattern analysis using a mobile robot with a directional antenna. We integrate a Particle Filter algorithm with a new sensing model which is built on a directional antenna model and Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA)-based MAC protocol model. we model and analyze the channel idle probability and busy collision probability as a function of the number of radio sources in the CSMA protocol modeling. Based on the sensing model, we propose a particle-filter-based scheme to simultaneously estimate the number and the positions of networked radio sources. We provide a localization scheme based on the method of steepest descent for the purpose of performance comparison. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed localization scheme has a better success rate than the scheme based on the steepest descent at different tolerant distances.

Integrated Public Services : The Role of Networked Arrangements

Networked arrangements have moved from the periphery to the centre of public policy making and now occupy a position alongside of government as key mechanisms for social and organisational integration. Despite the current prominence of networked arrangements, little is known about how networks are actually formed and what explains their structure, operation and management strategies. Moreover, despite the pivotal position as the architects, administrators and facilitators of the network reform process, the role of central agencies of government in networked environments has yet to be fully determined. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the variation in networked arrangements and its effect on design and management and, in doing so, uncover the emergent role of central agencies of government. Using a mixed research design of case study and network analysis, this thesis 'unpacked' three exemplars of cross-sector networked arrangements within the Queensland human services arena. The research produced a number of findings. First, it provided empirical evidence to support the previously largely descriptive proposition that networked arrangements are differentiated. Second, through the synthesis of two parallel integration literatures, a framework to guide the design of networked arrangements was produced. Third, it identified a set of network management strategies and demonstrated that these horizontally oriented strategies were different to those currently utilised within government. Finally, the research developed a set of general and specific roles to guide central agencies' operation within the current networked environment.

Automatic Format Generation Techniques for Network Data Acquisition Systems

Any enhancement to the data acquisition setup software that can reduce the amount of time needed to configure the system is extremely useful. Automatic format generation is one of the most useful enhancements to a data acquisition setup application. By using Automatic Format Generation, an instrumentation engineer can significantly reduce the amount of time that is spent configuring the system while simultaneously gaining much greater flexibility in creating sampling formats. This paper discusses several techniques that can be used to generate sampling formats automatically while making highly efficient use of the system's bandwidth. This allows the user to obtain most of the benefits of a hand-tuned, manually created format without spending excessive time creating it. One of the primary techniques that this paper discusses is an enhancement to the commonly used power-of-two rule, for selecting sampling rates. This allows the system to create formats that use a wider variety of rates. The system is also able to handle groups of related measurements that must follow each other sequentially in the sampling format. This paper will also cover a packet based formatting scheme that organizes measurements based on common sampling rates. Each packet contains a set of measurements that are sampled at a particular rate. A key benefit of using an automatic format generation system with this format is the optimization of sampling rates that are used to achieve the best possible match for each measurement's desired sampling rate.

The objective of this thesis is to develop a theoretical understanding of computation in networked dynamical systems and demonstrate practical applications supported by the theory. We are interested in understanding how networks of locally interacting agents can be controlled to compute arbitrary functions of the initial node states. In other words, can a dynamical networked system be made to behave like a computer? In this thesis, we take steps towards answering this question with a particular model class for distributed, networked systems which can be made to compute linear transformations.

However, due to its CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access and Collision Detection) mechanics, Ethernet cannot transport data synchronously. This paper analyzed important features of transportation in a distributed data acquirement system, and presents a resolve for synchronously transporting data in a distributed data acquirement system by using direct Ethernet connection and TDM (time division multiplexing) technique.
