Revisiting New Babylon : the making and unmaking of a nomadic mythMcGowan, Jérémie Michael January 2011 (has links)
This thesis revisits Constant’s New Babylon (about 1956-1974). Turning to theories of primitivism and, in particular, Christopher L. Miller’s critical reading of ‘the nomad’ found in Gilles Deleuze’s and Félix Guattari’s A Thousand Plateaus (1980), I use previously published and unconsidered archival materials alike to demonstrate the importance of Romani to Constant’s original work and thinking on New Babylon. Positioning these materials against a selection of dominant claims, reference points and images now circulating in established New Babylon and Situationist International scholarship, I argue that Constant’s daily life and artistic practice, together with key moments in the development and public display of his project, are framed by references to, yearnings for and personal dealings with Romani, both real and imagined. Questioning contemporary theorisations of nomadism through a consideration of who travels and why, I advocate for a greater awareness of and sensitivity to the historical conditions that produce particular forms of movement. New Babylon and Romani are inextricably intertwined: to forget the one is to misunderstand, and misrepresent, the other.

Invisible Terrains: Experiences of Nomadic Music Teaching ArtistsKresek, Katharine Charlotte January 2018 (has links)
This study explores the complexities of professional performing freelance musicians who teach part-time through arts organizations in multiple educative settings, a condition I refer to as nomadic. Nomadicism is characterized by an inherent sense of itinerancy. Through semi-structured interviews and observations with three participants, I constructed narratives of individual experience through a method of narrative inquiry, which enabled much-needed nuance and complexity, as prior research in the field of teaching artistry has focused mainly on surveys of working conditions with mostly informal anecdotes from the field. The music teaching artists in this study negotiated highly complex careers to extraordinary degrees in which they experienced conflicts between their preparation as highly accomplished performers and their preparation for their work as teachers. While each participant expressed their motivations for pursuing careers as teaching artists in radically different ways, they shared similar patterns of integration and reciprocity between their performing and teaching identities. Participants communicated unique, varied, and idiosyncratic narratives of perceived successes and challenges in preparing, adapting, and negotiating their multiple roles across multiple spaces. While their work had them interacting with students, teachers, administration, family, and musical colleagues, the teaching artists still experienced significant feelings of isolation. Ultimately, each participant articulated the need for openings of dialogical spaces for teaching artists to commune and grow with one another. This study brings a critical perspective to the conditions of music teaching artists and how they and those that prepare and work with them might bring criticality and responsiveness to their unique place within the wider world of arts education.

Tal compreensão foi efetuada a partir do questionamento sobre o sujeito, a sua história, sua relação com o grupo e com a sociedade. Em tal perspectiva visou realizar uma análise, considerando as articulações entre o social e o psiquismo, a questão dos sujeitos nas ciências humanas e sociais. Assim, definiu-se como objetivo geral: compreender as múltiplas facetas da vergonha na vivência de "trecheiros" e os significados dessa condição no mundo contemporâneo. Isso levou a estudos sobre as características da vergonha e os diferentes tipos desse sentimento que aparecem nos trecheiros. A pesquisa se fundamentou na abordagem psicossociológica e o material de estudo foi constituído por relatos de oitos "trecheiros" que fazem uso dos serviços do C.A.M. (Centro Atendimento ao Migrante) de Assis - SP. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevistas semi-dirigidas, com duração variável. Com o desenvolvimento desse trabalho, buscou-se contribuir para a compreensão do sentimento da vergonha e de como ela interfere na vida das pessoas, tentando compreender o sujeito sobre si mesmo e no meio social em que faz parte, e deste modo, colaborar com estudos e reflexões acerca da vivência do indivíduo no contexto atual / Abstract: On this research it was intended to identify the feeling of shame among "trecheiros" (nomads) in the contemporary world and which meanings are built on those people's lives. Such comprehension was achieved by questioning the subjects, their histories, their relationship with groups and society. In this perspective an analysis was made, considering the articulations between the social sphere and psychism, the query of subjects in social sciences. Therefore, a general objective was outlined: to understand the multiple facets of shame in the lives of the "trecheiros", and also the meanings of this condition in the contemporary world. This understanding led the study to the characteristics of shame and the different types of this feeling, which appear on the "trecheiros". The research was based on a psychosociological approach and the material was composed of narration of eight "trecheiros" who use the services of the C.A.M. (Centro Atendimento ao Migrante - Migrant Care Center), in Assis, state of São Paulo. Data was obtained through semi-structured qualitative interviews, which had unfixed length of time. This research has sought contribution to the understanding of the feeling of shame and how it interferes on people's lives, trying to comprehend the subjects over themselves and the milieu to which they belong, and by doing so, the contribution to the studies and reflection over the experience of life of individuals in the current context / Mestre

This thesis investigates the theoretical and practical importance of nomadic ways of life for architecture. Nomadology is a construction of Deleuze and Guattari's 'counter-philosophy', challenging authenticity and propriety, in this case, in the context of architecture. This thesis describes how nomadology may serve contemporary architectural practice and criticism; challenging static, permanent, and heroically solitary ways of working and dwelling. Nomadology in architecture proposes ways for thinking and working temporally, dynamically, and collaboratively. The thesis suggests strategies - diagramming, ephemerality, movement, and collaboration - as ways of reconciling nomadism and architecture. The 'Contexts' section of this thesis surveys Western and global contexts of understanding nomads and nomadology, and how these pertain to architecture. Western conceptions of architecture have inhibited the study of nomadology in architecture. A case is made for challenging biases in Western views of architecture, for critically employing the ideas of the diagram and the rhizome in architectural criticism, and for recognising the role of movement. The 'Applications' section shows, through practical examples, that the potential of nomadology is latent in spatial and environmental practices of architectural production and architectural criticism. This section of the thesis identifies the significance of nomads as users and exponents of architecture, despite their frequent exclusion from architectural history. Tent architecture, practices of nomadic resistance and Bedouin life practices are considered as key examples. The 'Strategies' section suggests ways of applying principles of nomadology. This final section expands on the potential for 'peripatetic' practices of architecture. Processes of reconciling settled and nomadic tendencies in architectural projects are outlined. Strategies are described by which engendering and collaborating may be the means for creating architecture. Sedentarization and tourism : the case of the Zalabia Bedouin tribe of the southern JordanTarawneh, Musa Salim. January 2008 (has links)
Most of the recent studies on the southern Jordan Bedouins portray the Bedouins as being resistant to change and development. These studies are more descriptive than analytical, focusing on romantic aspects of the Bedouin's lifestyle. In contrast, this study, based on fieldwork conducted in Wadi Rum between June-November 2004, attempts an ethnographical study that does not represent the Bedouins in a stereotypical way, neither romanticising them nor treating them as in need of development. It is based on an examination of the relationship between the socio-cultural, economic and political aspects of Bedouin society and the physical environment in which they live. The different types of settlements inhabited by Wadi Rum's Bedouin society are documented, and the contextual sources of change that shaped, and are still shaping the Bedouins' living patterns, are analyzed.
