Revision of Wyeomyia (Hystatomyia) Dyar & Knab (Diptera: Culicidae: Sabethini

Adkins, Jessica Y. 27 August 2003 (has links)
Members of the tribe Sabethini (Diptera: Culicidae) oviposit and develop in phytotelmata (plant-held waters) and are primarily distributed in a pantropical pattern. Recent cladistic studies have demonstrated that while the tribe is monophyletic, three of its 13 genera are not. The genus Wyeomyia is particularly problematic and debate among culicidologists continues with regard to the monophyly of its subgenera. For example, the subgenus Hystatomyia was recently resurrected to include seven species within Wyeomyia that were without subgeneric placement. This was based on unique larval, pupal, and adult characters. However, 12 more undescribed species were separated out and identified as Hystatomyia species by John Belkin during the "Mosquitoes of Middle America" project. The objective of this study was to provide a modern species-level revision of Hystatomyia that includes diagnosis and description of all species and an examination of phylogenetic relationships within Hystatomyia using morphological characters from larval, pupal, and adult stages. / Graduation date: 2004

Lau fish taxonomy

Tyhurst, Catherine H. January 1976 (has links)
This thesis is a preliminary attempt to consolidate materials pertaining to Lau fish taxonomy (North Malaita, Solomon Islands). Data utilized come from two sources: those collected by Maranda and Maranda (1966-1968) and those collected by the author during a two-month field period (October-December 1975). Two approaches to the analysis of terminological systems are explored first. A general description of the Lau Taxonomic Universe follows in which the major components are indicated. The focus then shifts to a more detailed discussion of Lau Fish taxonomy. Material presented here takes three forms: (1) A comprehensive list of fish identified according to biological classifications. (2) A summary of data obtained from informants' Memory Lists of fish names. The problems of taxonomic inclusion and equivalence are considered. (3) A discussion of those data traditionally regarded as "Non-Taxonomic Terminology". Distinctive Features are then considered and some examples given. Upper Level Taxa are discussed first. Following this, the Features and Criteria for the classification of Lower Level Taxa are outlined. Suggestions for further inquiry and propositions concerning analytical avenues constitute the final portion of this presentation. / Arts, Faculty of / Anthropology, Department of / Graduate

Time-resolved x-ray scattering using synchrotron radiation applied to the study of a polymorphic transition in carbamazepine.

Forbes, Robert T., Edwards, Anthony D., Shekunov, Boris Yu., Grossmann, J,, York, Peter January 2001 (has links)
No / The thermodynamic status of -carbamazepine has been clarified using equilibrium solubility measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), heated X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and temperature-controlled X-ray scattering techniques. -Carbamazepine is the least stable of the three well-characterized anhydrous polymorphs of carbamazepine at 25°C. In addition, it was confirmed that -carbamazepine undergoes an exothermic transition to -carbamazepine at 130°C. The novel technique of time-resolved simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering has been successfully applied to monitor this transition in situ. It was concluded that -carbamazepine has a monotropic relationship with -carbamazepine.

Systematics of Trogidae (Coleoptera) : new South African species, and a molecular phylogeny of the family

Van der Merwe, Yolandi 04 September 2009 (has links)
At its inception, taxonomy simply provided guidelines for nomenclature. It has since developed into a science applied to problems relating to economics, conservation and even law. Taxonomy is arguably one of the most important pillars of the biological sciences, providing the framework from which all other studies are conducted. We expand this essential foundation by describing four new species of Trox in Chapter 2 of this dissertation - the first to be recorded in South Africa since Scholtz’s comprehensive revision of the family in 1980. All four new species are flightless and are restricted to densely vegetated areas. Based on their morphological characteristics, we conclude that the new species probably belong to the endemic South African “horridus”-group of Trox. At present, morphological studies suggest that Trogidae consists of only three genera – Polynoncus, Omorgus and Trox. The current consensus on the zoogeography of trogids, based on their current distribution patterns, is that they evolved in Central Pangaea, prior to the split that formed Laurasia and Gondwanaland. The Trox lineage is thought to have speciated in temperate Laurasia, invading Africa via a temperate faunal exchange route only after Gondwanaland had separated into the southern landmasses. However, in Chapter 3, our work, based on a molecular dataset, challenges these ideas. We investigated the phylogenetic relationships within the family by analysing the 16S ribosomal subunit gene on the mitochondrial genome, which has proved useful in investigating sub-familial relationships due to its fairly conserved nature. We performed both phenetic (Neighbor-Joining and Minimum Evolution) and likelihood (Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference) analyses on the resulting molecular dataset. We found only partial support for the theories suggested by the morphological dataset. In all analyses, we find four major groups - Polynoncus, Omorgus, Holarctic Trox (Trox s. str.) and African Trox (Phoberus) - not three as suggested by previous morphological studies. We strongly support the promotion of Phoberus to full generic status as it is represented by a monophyletic group in all analyses. Given the evolutionary divergence suggested by our molecular phylogeny, we still propose a Pangaean origin for Trox sensu lato, but suggest that this lineage might have had its origin in what would become North Africa. It is likely to have inhabited the globe-spanning metamorphic geological features known as the Pan-African Belts, which would have offered the ancestral temperate biome preferred by this genus. We theorize that the formation of the Tethys Sea would have separated Trox s. str. from the Phoberus lineage. A framework of uniform motor terminology for South African occupational therapists working with developmental motor delay

Barnard, Paula Monique 28 October 2009 (has links)
M.Sc. (Occupational Therapy), Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, 2009 / A uniform taxonomy within occupational therapy has become a recent focus of discussion and concern in the literature. This study investigated inconsistency in the literature and how South African occupational therapists use and understand terms related to motor performance in children with developmental motor delay. A three stage Delphi Technique was used to gain consensus on the association of characteristics of movement to six motor component terms. The results yielded both quantitative and qualitative data, which revealed that while there was strong consensus among the occupational therapists on some aspects of motor terminology, there is still ambiguity and overlap of understanding. This is reflected in a worrying inconsistency of the description of these terms in the literature and how occupational therapists use the terms in clinical practice. A Framework of Uniform Motor Terminology was developed based on the results of the Delphi Technique.

A taxonomic study of the genus Campylobacter

Roop, Roy Martin January 1985 (has links)
One hundred and eighteen (118) Campylobacter strains were studied by DNA homology experiments and characterized phenotypically. These strains formed eleven (11) distinct DNA homology groups (species) corresponding to C. fetus, C. "hyointestinalis", C. jejuni, C. coli, C. laridis, C. nitrofigilis, C. sputorum, C. mucosalis, C. concisus, and two unnamed groups currently referred to as the aerotolerant campylobacters and the "catalase-negative or weak" (CNW) strains. For practical reasons, we propose retaining the subspecies fetus and venerealis designations for C. fetus. In addition, we propose that the subspecies sputorum and bubulus designations for C. sputorum be dropped and replaced with biovars sputorum, bubulus and fecalis, the latter biovar including the catalase-positive strains formerly known as C. “fecalis". Biotyping schemes are also presented for C. jejuni and C. coli. Growth at 25 and 42°C, sensitivity to nalidixic acid and cephalothin, growth in semisolid medium containing 1% glycine, 1% oxgall or 3.5% NaCl, growth in a semisolid minimal medium (MM), anaerobic growth in 0.1% trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), H₂S production in Sulfide-Indole-Motility (SIM) medium, or on triple sugar iron (TSI) agar slants, hippurate hydrolysis, aerobic growth on agar plates, a requirement for H₂ or formate for microaerophilic growth or H₂ or formate and fumarate for anaerobic growth, alkaline phosphatase activity, and deoxyribonuclease (DNase) activity proved to be the most useful phenotypic characteristics for identifying these strains at the species, subspecies and biovar levels. / Ph. Názvosloví organických sloučenin / Nomenclature of organic compounds

Sezemská, Karolína January 2015 (has links)
One of the expected outputs of organic chemistry in "RVP G" is the application of rules of organic systematic terminology for the description of compounds, with the posibility of sing trivial names. There are several handbooks oriented on nomenclature of organic compounds that are available on Czech market. However, repeated imperfections appear in them permanently: the textbooks do not comply with the hybridisation of carbon atoms, the same simple examples are repeated, the rules are so simplified that they lead to the application of incorrect terminology principles etc. The submitted thesis is dealing with the matters of the terminology of organic compounds - with created tutorial material as its outcome. It is in the form of compendium of organic terminology accompanied by the exercises. The contribution of submitted thesis is complex insight into the theme and collection of tutorial materials intended mainly for the high school teachers first of all. Nevertheless it can be used by the students of high schools or basic courses of colleges as well.

Improvements to the Efficiency of the Radiotherapy Treatment Planning Process

Lee, Chieh-Hsiu Jason 26 July 2012 (has links)
Radiotherapy is one method of treating di erent diseases like cancer. It requires a treatment plan that clearly delineates target and non-target volumes, and the beams and their intensities to deliver the prescribed dose. Historical treatment plans often contain volume names that are unaccounted for. An approach is applied where desired volumes are detected and renamed to conform to current search standards. The mapped names provide an avenue for searching historical plans when performing outcomes analysis in the future to help improve quality in radiation therapy. A specific form known as intensity modulated radiation therapy is applied to total marrow irradiation, a method to remove all marrow in the body prior to bone marrow transplant. A set-covering approach is used, solved using heuristics and commercial packages to compare outcomes. Constraint programming is used in an attempt to better and to improve on the heuristic solutions.
