A recursive formula for computing Taylor polynomial of quantile

This paper presents a simple recursive formula to compute the Taylor polynomial of quantile for a continuous random variable. It is very easy to implement the formula in standard symbolic programming system, for example Mathematica (Wolfram, 2003). Applications of the formula to standard normal distribution and to the generation of random variables for continuous distribution with bounded support are illustrated.

Mixture models for estimating operation time distributions.

Surgeon operation time is a useful and important information for hospital management, which involves operation time estimation for patients under different diagnoses, operation room scheduling, operating room utilization improvements and so on. In this work, we will focus on studying the operation time distributions of thirteen operations performed in the gynecology (GYN) department of one major teaching hospital in southern Taiwan. We firstly investigate what types of distributions are suitable in describing these operation times empirically, where log-normal and mixture log-normal distribution are identified to be acceptable statistically in describing these operation times. Then we compare and characterize the operations into different categories based on the operation time distribution estimates. Later we try to illustrate the possible reason why distributions for some operations with large data set turn out to be mixture of certain log-normal distributions. Finally we end with discussions on possible future work.

Geological Evolution Of The Gediz Graben, Sw Turkey: Temporal And Spatial Variation Of The Graben

Gediz Graben is a continental extensional basin filled with Neogene sediments. Its margins are controlled by active ~E&amp / #8211 / W-trending fault systems with major system, in terms of total offset and duration of activity, located along the southern margin. The graben evolved as a half graben by the activity of the southern margin during the entire Miocene. Then, the northern margin-bounding structure initiated by Plio&amp / #8211 / Quaternary to form the current configuration of the graben with an inherited asymmetry. The southern margin-bounding fault system forms a graben-facing step-like pattern from the horst block (~2000 m) down to the graben floor (~200 m). The faults become younger towards the graben and the structural maturity decreases in the same direction. Fault plane data suggest ~N&amp / #8211 / S-oriented regional crustal extension through the entire graben history with no evidence of temporal change in the regional extension direction. Minor spatial variations are attributed to poorly defined s3-axis or local stress field anomalies caused by fault interactions. Evolution of the Gediz Graben is a dynamic process as indicated by pronounced changes in the geometry and lateral extend of the southern margin-bounding structures along strike and dip directions. This also influenced the lithofacies, depositional pattern and thickness of the graben fill units. The western Anatolian extension is episodic with earlier (Miocene) and later (Plio&amp / #8211 / Quaternary) phases of extension and intervening short phase of contraction (Late Miocene&amp / #8211 / Early Pliocene). Despite of this fact, evidence for the short-term intervening contractional phase throughout the Gediz Graben is scarce and there is local observation of folds and thrust/reverse faults affecting the AlaSehir formation. These structures suggest that the short-term phase of contraction might have existed but most probably been absorbed by the high rates of extension. This data may further imply that graben evolution from half-graben phase (Miocene configuration) to full graben phase (present day configuration) might be a discontinuous process accompanied by a short-time break in-between.

Acoustic Wave Analysis Using Different Wave Propagation Models

In this study in order to simulate the acoustic waves, Ray Theory and Normal Mode models are used. These methods are analyzed using MATLAB simulation tool / differences between two models are examined and a region with a known bottom profile and sound velocity profiles is investigated. The Ray Theory is used in acoustic systems which is the one of the applications of wave modeling. Ray theory is solved with standard Ordinary Differential Equation solvers and normal mode with finite element method. Different bottom profiles and sound velocity profiles previously taken are interpolated to form an environment and examined in the case study. in the case study.

Effect Of Estimation In Goodness-of-fit Tests

In statistical analysis, distributional assumptions are needed to apply parametric procedures. Assumptions about underlying distribution should be true for accurate statistical inferences. Goodness-of-fit tests are used for checking the validity of the distributional assumptions. To apply some of the goodness-of-fit tests, the unknown population parameters are estimated. The null distributions of test statistics become complicated or depend on the unknown parameters if population parameters are replaced by their estimators. This will restrict the use of the test. Goodness-of-fit statistics which are invariant to parameters can be used if the distribution under null hypothesis is a location-scale distribution. For location and scale invariant goodness-of-fit tests, there is no need to estimate the unknown population parameters. However, approximations are used in some of those tests. Different types of estimation and approximation techniques are used in this study to compute goodness-of-fit statistics for complete and censored samples from univariate distributions as well as complete samples from bivariate normal distribution. Simulated power properties of the goodness-of-fit tests against a broad range of skew and symmetric alternative distributions are examined to identify the estimation effects in goodness-of-fit tests. The main aim of this thesis is to modify goodness-of-fit tests by using different estimators or approximation techniques, and finally see the effect of estimation on the power of these tests.

Effectiveness Of Set Accelerating Admixtures With Different Cement Types

Accelerating and mineral admixtures, one of the major ingredients in concrete, are primarily used to modify the properties of both fresh and hardened concrete. Within the scope of this thesis, there were four types of cements having almost identical fineness. The mixes were prepared by using natural pozzolan, blast furnace slag and limestone conforming to TS EN 197-1 and two types of accelerating admixtures, namely triethanolamine (TEA) and calcium formate (CF). The effect of set accelerating admixtures with different cement types on the setting time, water demand and compressive strength has been analyzed by an experimental study in accordance with relevant ASTM standards. Finally, it has been observed that the amount of the accelerating admixtures used is suitable because of their effects on the water demand, setting and strength. Due to the density difference of mineral admixtures and clinker, the normal consistency and 110% flow water content should be considered on a volumetric basis. The effectiveness of the accelerating admixtures on the normal consistency water, 110% flow water content and setting time depends on the type and amount of mineral admixtures. The increase caused by CF in the normal consistency and 110% flow water content is higher than that by TEA. The accelerating effect of TEA and CF on the setting times is more significant for cements incorporating 6% mineral admixture. The effects of accelerating admixtures on the compressive strength change with specimen age, type and amount of mineral admixtures. Generally, for all cement types, early age compressive strengths increase with the increase of TEA, however long term strengths increase by increasing CF.

In 1989, the Tiananmen Square massacre shocked the world. Under the heavy pressure from Congress and the public opinion, the government of the United States, which regarded human rights as one of its most cherished values, was forced to reexamine its relations with the PRC and to pay more attention to the PRC¡¦s human rights issues. However, the Cliton administration chose to de-link the human rights issue from its consideration whether to give the PRC the MFN status. To Beijing, the human rights issue is only a tool in Washington¡¦s foreign policy. China regards human rights as its domestic affairs. It had always questioned Washington¡¦s purpose and motivation to intervene mainland China¡¦s domestic affairs. This thesis studies the factor of human rights in the U.S.-China relations. U.S. Congress used MFN as an annual check about China¡¦s human rights situation. Before 2000, U.S. Congress members had long time questioned the administration that grantee PNTR would lead to the destruction of China¡¦s motivation about human right improvement. The author intends to review the ¡§Human Right Report¡¨ in the period of Cliton¡¦s administration, trade relations, UN human right debate and bills. Besides, the progress of China¡¦s human rights situation will be evaluated in the thesis. Through the review of the human right factor in the Sino-US relations, we can find that how the strategy of human right been used by U.S. government. However, the human right issue still is one of the important factors which could affect the future Sino-US relations.

Use and Development of Computational Tools in Drug Discovery: From Small Molecules to Cyclic Peptides

The scope of this work focuses on computationally modeling compounds with protein structures. While the impetus of drug discovery is the innovation of new therapeutic molecules, it also involves distinguishing molecules that would not be an effective drug. This can be achieved by inventing new tools or by refining old tools. Virtual screening (VS, also called docking), the computational modeling of a molecule in a receptor structure, is a staple in predicting a molecule's affinity for an intended target. In our Virtual Target Screening system (also called inverse-docking), VS is used to find high-affinity targets, which can potentially explain absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) of a molecule of interest in the human body. The next project, low-mode docking (LD), attempts to improve VS by incorporating protein flexibility into traditional docking where a static receptor structure has potential to produce poor results due to incorrectly predicted ligand poses. Finally, VS, performed mostly on small molecules, is scaled up to cyclic peptides by employing Monte Carlo simulations and molecular dynamics to mimic the steps of small molecule VS. The first project discussed is Virtual Target Screening (also called inverse-docking) where a small molecule is virtually screened against a library of protein structures. Predicting receptors to which a synthesized compound may bind would give insights to drug repurposing, metabolism, toxicity, and lead optimization. Our protocol calibrates each protein entry with a diverse set of small molecule structures, the NCI Diversity Set I. Our test set, 20 kinase inhibitors, was predicted to have a high percentage of kinase "hits" among approximately 1500 protein structures. Further, approved drugs within the test set generally had better rates of kinase hits. Next, normal mode analysis (NMA), which can computationally describe the fundamental motions of a receptor structure, is utilized to approach the rigid body bias problem in traditional docking techniques. Traditional docking involves the selection of a static receptor structure for VS; however, protein structures are dynamic. Simulation of the induced fit effect in protein-ligand binding events is modeled by full articulation of the approximated large-scale low-frequency normal modes of vibration, or "low-modes," coupled with the docking of a ligand structure. Low-mode dockings of 40 cyclin dependent 2 (CDK2) inhibitors into 54 low-modes of CDK2 yielded minimum root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) values of 1.82 – 1.20 Å when compared to known coordinate data. The choice of pose is currently limited to docking score, however, with ligand pose RMSD values of 3.87 – 2.07 Å. When compared to corresponding traditional dockings with RMSD values of 5.89 – 2.33 Å, low-mode docking was more accurate. The last discussion involves the rational docking of a cyclic peptide to the murine double minute 2 (MDM2) oncoprotein. The affinity for a cyclic peptide (synthesized by Priyesh Jain, McLaughin Lab, University of South Florida), PJ-8-73, in MDM2 was found to be within an order of magnitude of a cyclic peptide from the Robinson Lab at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Both are Β-hairpin cyclic peptides with IC50 values of 650 nm and 140 nm, respectively. Using the co-crystalized structure of the Robinson peptide (PDB 2AXI), we modeled the McLaughlin peptide based on an important interaction of the 6-chloro-tryptophan residue of the Robinson peptide occupying the same pocket in MDM2 as the tryptophan residue by the native p53 transactivation helical domain. By preserving this interaction in initial cyclic peptide poses, the resulting pose of PJ-8-73 structure in MDM2 possessed comparable active site residue contacts and surface area. These protocols will aid medical research by using computer technology to reduce cost and time. VTS utilizes a unique structural and statistical calibration to virtually assay thousands of protein structures to predict high affinity binding. Determining unintended protein targets aids in creating more effective drugs. In low-mode docking, the accuracy of virtual screening was increased by including the fundamental motions of proteins. This newfound accuracy can decrease false negative results common in virtual screening. Lastly, docking techniques, usually for small molecules, were applied to larger peptide molecules. These modifications allow for the prediction of peptide therapeutics in protein-protein interaction modulation, a growing interest in medicine. Impactful in their own ways, these procedures contribute to the discovery of drugs, whether they are small molecules or cyclic peptides.

A Study of Permutation Polynomials over Finite Fields

Let p be a prime and q = pk. The polynomial gn,q isin Fp[x] defined by the functional equation Sigmaa isin Fq (x+a)n = gn,q(xq- x) gives rise to many permutation polynomials over finite fields. We are interested in triples (n,e;q) for which gn,q is a permutation polynomial of Fqe. In Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of this dissertation, we present many new families of permutation polynomials in the form of gn,q. The permutation behavior of gn,q is becoming increasingly more interesting and challenging. As we further explore the permutation behavior of gn,q, there is a clear indication that gn,q is a plenteous source of permutation polynomials. We also describe a piecewise construction of permutation polynomials over a finite field Fq which uses a subgroup of Fq*, a “selection” function, and several “case” functions. Chapter 5 of this dissertation is devoted to this piecewise construction which generalizes several recently discovered families of permutation polynomials.
