Investigating Servant Leadership in the Context of Cause-Related Sporting Events

Parris, Denise 2011 December 1900 (has links)
This dissertation presents three separate studies designed to provide systematic and evidence-based insight into how servant leadership could be a crucial success factor in helping non-profit organizations (NPOs) hosting cause-related sporting events achieve their missions. Thus, the purpose of my dissertation was to advance the literature and the practice of servant leadership. In Study one, I conducted a systematic literature review of studies that explored an application of servant leadership. A disciplined screening process resulted in a sample population of 39 studies. The synthesis of these applied studies revealed: a) there is no consensus on the definition of servant leadership; b) servant leadership is being applied across a variety of contexts, cultures, and themes; c) researchers are using multiple measures to explore servant leadership; and d) these studies provide strong evidence that servant leadership helps organizations and improves the well-being of followers. In Study two, I explored the leadership style of the founder of a cause-related sporting event to understand how this leadership style motivated volunteers. This was achieved through semi-structured personal interviews, document analysis, and personal observations of the 25th National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Surf Festival. Results indicated that the founder was a servant leader who influenced volunteer motivation by generating a shared vision dedicated to helping others, building a caring and loving community, and creating the freedom and resources for followers to become servants themselves. In Study three, using a longitudinal case study, I qualitatively explored if a cause-related sporting event could inspire participants to become servant leaders, and if so, how does the event achieve this? Data collection methods included focus groups, open-ended qualitative questionnaires, direct observations, document analysis, and semi-structured personal interviews with participants of the U.S. NKF Transplant Games, specifically Team Florida. Analyses revealed the event inspired participants to serve others and helped to build a community of servant leaders. It was found that three specific mechanisms of the Games generated community-level outcomes, which led to impacts on participants and helped them develop servant leadership. I then developed a model to describe a cause-related sporting event's ability to inspire participants to become servant leaders.

Behaviour in a Canadian Multi-payer, Multi-provider Health Care Market: The Case of the Physiotherapy Market in Ontario

Holyoke, Paul 24 September 2009 (has links)
This is a study of several contentious issues in Canadian health policy involving the interaction of public and private payers and for-profit (FP) and not-for-profit (NFP) providers; the influence of health professionals on market structure; and the role of foreign investment. A case study was used, the Ontario physiotherapy market in 2003-2005, with its complex mix of payers and providers and foreign investment opportunities. Key market features were: fragmented but substantial payer influence, effective though uncoordinated cost control across payers, constrained labour supply, and fragmented patient referral sources. These features increased the complexity of providers’ interactions with patients and payers, reducing standardization and therefore favouring local, professional-owned small business FP providers (FP/s) for ambulatory care. NFP Hospitals’ market share declined. The findings generally confirmed expected behavioural differences between FP and NFP providers but expected differences between investor-owned FP providers (FP/c) and FP/s providers were not generally found. FP/s dominated the market, and FP/c providers appeared to mimic FP/s market behaviours, competing in local sub-markets. With no single or dominant payer, cost control difficulties were expected, but all 11 payer categories (public and private) used various cost control mechanisms, resulting in significant collective but uncoordinated influence. Generally, no payer alone supported a provider’s operations. The dominant labour suppliers, regulated physiotherapists, were scarce and exerted significant pressure, affecting market structure by asserting individual preferences and professional interests. FP/s dominance resulted, supported by the traditional patient referral source, physicians in small practices. Very little foreign investment was found despite little protection for domestic providers under NAFTA. In sum, this study showed FP and NFP provider stereotypes are subject to payer pressure: FP/c organizations can adapt by mimicking FP/s, and payers can modify NFPs’ assumed community orientation. Labour shortages and historical referral patterns can make individual professionals and their preferences more influential than their collective profession without diminishing the importance of professional interests. The degree and structure of payer control can make a market unattractive to foreign investors. Finally, this market – neither a planned or standard market – had a service provision pattern more broadly influenced by professionalism and practitioner interests than policies or prices.

Répartition du revenu et reproduction du capital : une approche classique / Distribution of income and reproduction of capital : a classical approach

Rosell, Olivier 10 December 2012 (has links)
The dissertation shows that contemporary classical theory relies on two representations of the idea of ‘wages’. Those representations depend on the way labour is valued. If wages are the result of a struggle for added value, they are seen as exogenous. On the other hand, if wages are the result of competition in labour markets, they are seen as endogenous. The classical theory, which is based on Ricardo and Torrens’ seminal works allows to understand: 1) the distribution of added value, and its effects on relative prices in economies both in equilibrium and disequilibrium, 2) the position of wage-earners in the processes of production and exchange, 3) the source of profits defined as compensation of specifically capitalist practice. Chapter I discusses Torrens’ contribution to the classical idea of exogenous wages. Chapter II presents Torrens’ theory of prices. This theory is then used in chapter III to analyse the relationships between distribution variables and relative prices in economies in equilibrium or in disequilibrium. Chapter IV focuses on the distribution of final goods among wage earners and capitalists. The last chapter (V) underlines the main features of Torrens’ theory of wages. In comparison with Sraffa’s work, this theory proposes first that real wages are fixed on labour market, and then that the rate of profit can be defined as a surplus labour, but not as an unpaid labour.

Specific conditions for marketing of non-profit organizations conducting fundraising / Specifika förutsättningar för marknadsföring av ideella organisationer med insamlingsverksamhet

Andersson, Kaisa, Björk, Carolina January 2013 (has links)

Skuhrová, Petra January 2011 (has links)
The title of my thesis is "The potential of non-profit organizations in increasing the financial literacy of citizens". The goal of my thesis is to analyze and evaluate the activity of non-profit organizations in increasing the financial literacy of citizens. It is also focusing on the relation between the government, the for-profit and the non-profit sector in the field of financial literacy. I divided my thesis into six chapters. In the first chapter I defined the research problem, set the goals of my thesis and defined the research questions. In the second chapter I focused on the methodology and the definition of my information resources. For the purpose of this thesis I chose the semi-standardized interview, the analysis of participants and the analysis of documents. In the second part of this chapter I made the review of the information resources which I used for this thesis. My thesis is based on the theory of "the triangle" of the market, the government and the civil society, the concept of the social accounting and the benefits and failures of the non-profit sector. First I focused on the government policy in the field of increasing the financial literacy of citizens. I found out that the first steps the government made in this field were done in the year 2005 when the first strategy...
