Distribution, ecology, and reproductive biology of the orangefin madtom (Noturus gilberti)

Distribution of the orangefin madtom (Noturus gilberti) was determined from 347 sites sampled in Virginia and North Carolina. This species inhabited 264 stream kilometers, over twice the reported range, in the following systems: Craig Creek, Roanoke River, Dan River, Big Chestnut Creek, South Mayo River, Pigg River, and Smith River. The orangefin madtom was somewhat common; 33% (Dan River) to 70% (Craig Creek) of the sites sampled were occupied. Negative interspecific associates of orangefin madtoms included chubs, mountain redbelly dace, rosyside dace, crescent shiners, and crayfish; only Roanoke darters were considered positive associates. Sand and silt levels were significantly lower at sites with N. gilberti, while percentage of small cobble, local gradient, and depth were significantly higher. Discriminant function analysis identified large gravel, local gradient, silt, and occurrence of rosyside dace and crayfish, as significant predictors of the occurrence of the orangefin madtom. Seasonal samples from Craig Creek consisted of three age groups. The smallest individual captured was 33 mm total length (TL) and the largest was 111 mm TL. Mortality appeared moderate from age I until summer of the third year, when most individuals apparently died shortly after spawning. Spawning habitat of orangefin madtoms in Craig Creek appeared to be fast-water riffles dominated by small cobble substrate. Attempts to induce N. gilberti spawning in the laboratory were unsuccessful due to high mortality of captive fish. Field-collected margined madtom egg masses, however, were successfully hatched, and subsequent survival was significantly greater for fry fed ground trout chow versus live brine shrimp nauplii. / Master of Science

The Status Of Stonecats (Noturus Flavus) In The Laplatte And Missisquoi Rivers, Vermont

Stonecats (Noturus flavus, Rafinesque 1818) are designated as a Vermont state-listed endangered species because their known distribution is limited to two systems, the LaPlatte and Missisquoi rivers. The restricted distribution and lack of knowledge on abundance in either river is cause for concern in the continued survival of these populations. Based on the capture numbers and large size range of individuals, we predicted that the population in the LaPlatte River, which provides quality benthic habitat, is stable. However, the Missisquoi River population has the potential for increased intermittent mortalities from two sources, lampricide (3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol) treatment every four years and dewatering during drought conditions. In 2012, 2013, and 2014 we captured, PIT tagged (> 90 mm total length), and VIE marked all Stonecats collected using backpack electrofishing and minnow traps in the LaPlatte and Missisquoi rivers. A total of 1252 were PIT tagged in the LaPlatte River and 125 in the Missisquoi River. First we estimated survival and seniority of Stonecats in the LaPlatte River, using the Pradel model in Program Mark, and derived an average annual lambda of 0.9826. The population estimates from the LaPlatte River were modeled in a population viability analysis (PVA). Few Stonecats were captured in the Missisquoi River, so we used the PVA model to estimate the extinction rates with increased intermittent mortalities on 4-, 6-, and 8-year cycles to predict the long-term viability of the population. With an initial number of 2000 individuals, the population became extinct 100% of the time with an increase in mortality of 0.1 on a 4-year cycle. Our results indicate that the LaPlatte River population is stable, but the Missisquoi River population, in the area affected by lampricide, is not. These results are informative for developing future management scenarios, however, our approach has uncertainty that can only be addressed through obtaining more data on the Missisquoi River population.

Controlled cultivation techniques for the recovery of threatened fishes in Virginia

The goal of this research was to develop captive propagation methods for the Federally threatened spotfin chub, Cyprinella monacha, and yellowfin madtom, Noturus flavipinnis, by using closely related, but unthreatened species, to evaluate potential techniques. The surrogate species used were the whitetail shiner, Cyprinella galactura, and the margined madtom, Noturus insignis. I investigated methods to promote gonadal maturation, induce spawning, and rear larvae of these fishes. Captive whitetail shiners developed mature gonads under a variety of temperature and photoperiod conditions. Spawning condition was maintained for over two years when they were held at constant warm temperature (≈ 24 C) and long photoperiod (16 h light). Whitetail shiners did not readily spawn in aquaria, but were induced to spawn by hormonal injection with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and carp pituitary extract (CPE) at mean dosages of 1688 I.U./kg and 20 mg/kg, respectively, or with luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa) and domperidone at mean dosages of 363 µg/kg and 36 mg/kg, respectively. Most females spawned within 30 h of the first injection. Stripped ova were effectively wet-spawned, and larvae hatched in 8 d at 25 C. I obtained a mean hatch rate of 55 %, but lack of swimbladder inflation resulted in very poor survival of several batches of eggs. Larvae began feeding within 2 d of hatching, and survival rates of 50 to 90 % after 16 d were obtained when larvae were fed twice daily on a diet of brine shrimp nauplii at a rate of ≈ 10/L/d, and a commercially prepared larval fish diet at a rate of ≈ 14 mg/L/d. Changing photoperiod, but not temperature, was required to induce oocyte maturation in most captive female margined madtoms. Sperm production in mature male madtoms was enigmatic; motile sperm were observed only once. Plasma testosterone concentrations in males peaked just prior to the spawning season at 6.5 ng/mL, but levels were not correlated with male gonadosomatic values. Plasma 17β-estradiol levels in females peaked just prior to the spawning season at 15 ng/mL, and were correlated with gonadosomatic values. Captive margined madtoms did not tank spawn unless they were hormonally injected with hCG and CPE at mean dosages of 5256 I.U./kg and 58 mg/kg, respectively, or with LHRHa and domperidone at mean dosages of 554 µg/kg and 55 mg/kg, respectively. Most females ovulated within 78 h of the first injection. Inclusion of more than one breeding pair per tank inhibited tank spawning. Embryos did not develop in 55 % of tank-spawned ova, or from any strip-spawned ova. Parents consumed spawned egg masses if they remained with the nest. Hatch rates > 65 % were obtained by suspending egg masses in a large-mesh basket over turbulent aeration at 28 to 30 C. Larvae hatched in 7 d at 28 C. Survival rates > 50 % after 15 d were obtained when larvae were fed salmon starter twice daily at a rate of 20 mg/L/d, and tanks were thoroughly cleaned daily. / Ph. D.
