Informe de Seminario para optar al grado de Licenciada en Lengua y Literatura Inglesa / One objective of this work is uncovering how the notions of subjectivity, otherness, and the urban landscape relate to one another in the novel NW, as they are displayed in the characters’ lives and in the narrative texture of the work. The relevance of this lies on the fact that uncovering how these notions relate to one another is uncovering how women’s subjectivities often find themselves in the crisis the novel portrays. The discussion of an issue that often identifies us as women is fundamental in the context of the XXI century when more times than not we lose our awareness of where we stand in the world, what we are and what we might be in the future. A second objective is to explore how the crises that the characters’ subjectivities are going through in their relation with the urban landscape are represented in terms of the novel’s aesthetic and narrative resources. To gain further insight as to the richness, in literary terms, of the novel is to deepen the literary discussion surrounding contemporary British literature.

In the course of it we have studied the first appearance of the urban subject, amazed by the new metropolitan surroundings that he finds himself in. Then comes the Fláneur who observes, sometimes as an outsider, the new bohemian life in the big cities and finally cannot find a place to fit in the crowd, or either enjoying the crowd in their loneliness. In literature, the cities are built up by the narrator; here is where detail shows its power to set full images in our minds. Cities we know as the back of our hands and like to wander to recall the past, cities we meet for the first time and would like to walk all over, and cities we knew when they were great and now we find destroyed. That we have studied concerning the city. However, this present work is almost entirely related to the urban subject and how they manage to live in the ever-growing city.

I believe that through the different temporalities of the characters, the section “Time Passes” may acquire a different meaning in the novel. This section is the one which brings to light the differences among the times lived by the characters; therefore, I propose that the temporalities exposed in this section surpass the boundaries given by the structure of the novel. In this way, the time of Time Passes outstrips the whole novel; thus gaining an organic relevance, changing our perception of the form of the literary work. From my point of view, Time Passes overcomes the structural

level in order to gain relevance in giving the novel another way of interpreting it through the issue of time and temporality.

Informe final de Seminario de Grado para optar al grado de Licenciado en Lengua y Literatura Inglesas / Facultad de Filosofía y Humanidades / George Orwell is most popularly known because of his novels dealing with the issue of totalitarian governments or states: Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. The former, deals with the topic by means of satire; while the latter, deals with it by means of a dystopia. Orwell‟s dystopia, which is the novel to be studied in this graduate thesis paper, is set in London, in the year 1984. It has been more than twenty-five years form that date, however the threats of a state of that kind and, the worst all, the many reflections of the novel in our society have not disappeared, nor, perhaps, diminished.
In the following work, I will study the issue of places and non-places in Nineteen Eighty-Four. Evidently, it is not my intention to analyse all places and non-places present in this novel but mainly one, which is, from my perspective, the room Winston rents to the fake antique dealer. For this purpose, I will analyse selected passages and episodes from the object novel of this thesis, Orwell‟s Nineteen Eighty-Four, especially those that relate with Winston‟s experiences in the city and the room.

Informe de Seminario para optar al grado de Licenciado en Lengua y Literatura Hispánica mención Literatura / [...] Ahora bien, la intención de este informe no es referir este amplio marco de estudio, sino centrarnos en una de sus manifestaciones más representativas durante el siglo XVIII, el Robinson Crusoe , escrito y publicado el año 1719 por Daniel Defoe en Inglaterra. La imagen del náufrago inglés es hoy casi universal, dada la fuerza de la metáfora de la sobrevivencia del hombre solo en una isla. Sin embargo, la lectura atenta de la novela y la investigación en torno a ella, han ido revelando cada vez con mayor detalle múltiples elementos dentro de ésta, que permiten identificar ciertas problemáticas que aquí queremos abordar. La primera motivación que fundamenta esta investigación es la de reconocer la obra de Daniel Defoe en un contexto de producción y dilucidar las redes que conectan al texto y su época. Sin embargo, esta resultaría una tarea demasiado extensa, dado que las posibilidades son múltiples: relación con un contexto religioso, relación con un contexto político, relación con un contexto social, económico, filosófico o incluso estrictamente literario. Pero la mejor solución para enfrentar este primer problema es simple: ceñirse a lo que la misma obra dice, a los elementos de la realidad que ésta desarrolla. Y el reconocimiento de estos, es el reconocimiento de la focalización. Los diccionarios de retórica consultados definen ésta fundamentalmente como el punto de vista desde el cual se narra. Ese es entonces nuestro primer objetivo: ¿quién y cómo narra Robinson Crusoe? ¿De qué herramientas se vale para ello? ¿Qué cosas son las que priman en esta relación? ¿Cómo se construye la perspectiva narrativa y de enunciación en la obra de Defoe?
