Desert dune system response to Late Quaternary environmental change in the northeastern Rub’ al Khali : advances in the application of optically stimulated luminescence datasets

Leighton, Carly L. January 2014 (has links)
The application of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to desert sand dunes has allowed accumulation histories to be used as tools to infer past environmental change. In response to issues facing the interpretation of these records, two research questions are addressed in this thesis. (i) Are dune chronologies representative of dune stratigraphies? And (ii) how can we most appropriately interpret dune chronologies as records of Quaternary environmental conditions? Five dune profiles were sampled for OSL dating at two sites in the northeastern Rub’ al Khali in the southern Arabian Peninsula. The visible stratigraphy was used to guide sampling for three of the profiles and the effectiveness of this approach is assessed. A key finding is that bounding surfaces are not always identifiable as chronological hiatuses by OSL dating, given the level of precision that can be achieved. Using hierarchical relationships visible in two-dimensional exposures is therefore not guaranteed to identify the depositional units necessary to reconstruct dune histories. Comparison of the depositional records from three sampled profiles shows that there is significant variability in chronologies at both the dune and dunefield scales. In light of these findings, the use of ‘range-finder’ OSL dating was investigated as a method of increasing sample throughput in the laboratory. It is concluded that the use of partially prepared samples and shortened measurement techniques can be used to rapidly assess the chronological context of samples and target those units most useful in constructing dune profiles. A new method of presenting dunefield OSL datasets as net accumulation rates, incorporating accumulation thickness rather than relying on the frequency of ages, is presented. Within the last 30 ka, regional accumulation and preservation occurred at ~30-26, 22.5-18, 16-9, 6-2.7, 2.1-1.6, 1.1 and 0.7 ka. In conjunction with numerical model results and a review of other palaeoenvironmental archives, the regional aeolian record is interpreted as a response to changing forcing factors. High rates of net accumulation between ~16-9 ka are attributed to coeval increases in sediment supply and transport capacity. A hiatus in accumulation between ~9-6 ka is interpreted as a result of reduced sediment availability due to high moisture levels. The importance of both external forcing factors and local controls on dune accumulation processes is recognised, and therefore the importance of sampling at multiple locations to distinguish these factors is emphasised.

Extent and chronology of the Pleistocene permafrost in France : database of periglacial structures and OSL dating of sand wedges.

Andrieux, Eric 16 June 2017 (has links)
During the Mid to Late Pleistocene, the land area affected by periglacial conditions expanded and contracted repeatedly over large surfaces in mid-latitude Western Europe. In such environments, permafrost or deep seasonal freezing of the ground formed typical features, which have been the subject of abundant research by geomorphologists. In particular, researchers attempted to reconstruct the maximal extent of Pleistocene permafrost based on field evidence. Although most reconstructions suggest that permafrost spread over part of France during the coldest periods of the Pleistocene, there is no agreement regarding the land surface affected. This is mainly due to the scarcity of field data used for mapping and to the questionable palaeoclimatic significance of certain periglacial features. In addition, permafrost modelling during the Last Glacial Maximum using Global Climate Models does not seem consistent with field data. To solve these issues, a database of Pleistocene periglacial features has been compiled from a review of academic literature and unpublished reports, the analysis of aerial photographs and new field surveys. Polygons, soil stripes, ice-wedge pseudomorphs, sand wedges and composite wedge pseudomorphs were included in the database together with their geographic coordinates, geological context, description and references. The distribution of the identified features was analysed with a GIS software and clearly indicates that large areas in France were affected by periglaciation, apart from the southwesternmost part of France and the Languedoc. Ice-wedge pseudomorphs do not extend south of 47°N which indicates that widespread discontinuous permafrost did not affect the land south of the Paris basin. The exclusive presence of sand wedges with primary infill between 45 and 47°N, mainly in the periphery of coversands, suggests that thermal contraction cracking of the ground occurred together with sand drifting in a context of deep seasonal frost or sporadic discontinuous permafrost, unfavourable for the growth of significant ground-ice bodies. However, the description of composite-wedge pseudomorphs below 47°N indicates that at least locally ice veins formed probably during exceptionally cold winters. To provide a chronological framework for thermal contraction cracking single-grain OSL measurements were performed on 33 samples taken in the sandy infilling of sand-wedges and composite-wedge pseudomorphs. Results suggest that multiple events were recorded within wedges. The extraction of the datasets using the Finite Mixture Model, which was developed to analyse statistically data comprising multiple components, allowed calculating 86 ages. These age estimates show that wedge activity in France occurred at least 11 times over the last 100 ka. The most widespread events of thermal contraction cracking occurred between ca. 30 and 24 ka (Last Permafrost Maximum) and are concomitant with periods of high sand availability (MIS 2). Although most phases of sand-wedge growth correlate well with known Pleistocene cold periods, the identification of wedge activity during late MIS 5 and the very beginning of the Holocene strongly suggests that sand-wedges do not only indicate permafrost but also deep seasonal ground freezing in the context of low winter insolation. The previously published young ages yielded by North-European sand-wedges likely result from poor record of periglacial periods concomitant with low sand availability and/or age averaging inherent to standard luminescence methods. This work allowed us to propose a map of the maximum extent of Late Pleistocene permafrost in France, which partially reconciles field data with palaeoclimatic simulations. The remaining discrepancies may be linked with a potential time lag between the Last Permafrost Maximum (c. 31–24 ka) and the Last Glacial Maximum (21 ka) and to the already identified warm winter bias of the models.

Tectonique active de la région d'Oulan Bator, Mongolie : analyse morpho-tectonique et paléosismologique des failles actives de Sharkhai et Avdar / Active tectonic of the region of Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia : morpho-tectonic and paléosismological analysis of Sharkhai and Avdar active faults

Al Ashkar, Abeer 07 September 2015 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the active tectonic of two new faults: the Sharkhai fault and the Avdar faults. Both faults were discovered in 2011 from HR satellite images at tens kilometers from the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar.Morpho-tectonic, geomorphological and paleoseismological approaches using high resolution Pleiades satellites images and field investigations allowed: 1) to map the both faults in details; 2) to describe their geometry and segmentation; 3) to identify their kinematic; 4) to document their recent activity and their seismic behavior (co-seismic and cumulated displacements, the time of the last earthquakes, slip rate). The Sharkhai fault extends 46 km with an average direction between N42°E and N72°E, and a dip between 72° and 66° either to south-east, between E106.31°/N47.352° and E106.53°/N47.485°, or sub-vertical between E106.474°/N47.473° and E106.75°/N47.57°. The fault is characterized by a linear and simple geometry. It is a left lateral strike slip with a normal vertical component. The paleoseismological investigations show evidences for three earthquakes: the EQ3 earthquake occurred before 3850±120 calBP, the EQ2 earthquake between 2400±70 calBP and 2030±40 calBP, and the most recent earthquake (MRE) between 1090±84 calBP and before the age of recent soil. The minimum return period of strong earthquakes on the fault Sharkhai is 1195 ± 157 years, which implies a maximum slip rate between 0.6±0.2 and 2.14±0.5 mm/year. Several segmentation scenarios of the fault where proposed indicating that the fault is capable to produce an earthquake of magnitude between 6 and 7. The maximum peak ground acceleration (PGA at rock) generated at Ulaanbaatar is 0.12 g, 0.28 g at the new airport, and 0.17 g at the city of Zuunmod. These values correspond to intensity between VI and X at rock sites. The Avdar fault, 47 km length, have an average orientation between N26°E and N88°E and a dip between 40° and 55°. The southwestern part of the fault is characterized by a simple and linear geometry while the architecture of the surface rupture is complex in the northeastern part. The measured offsets indicate that the fault is left lateral with a normal component. The paleoseismic trenches attest its seismic activity during the Quaternary. The fault can be divided into several segments suggesting earthquakes of a magnitude ranging from 5.8 to 7. The most important values of PGA (at rock site) would be 0.1 g at Ulaanbaatar, 0.18 g for the new airport and 0.19 g for Zuunmod city. These values indicate an intensity between VI and X. Paleoseismic trench shows that the last earthquake occurred on the fault since 5665± 85calBP. All these results should be considered in estimating the seismic hazard in the region of the capital Ulaanbaatar especially as, alone, it contains more than the half of the country population. Situated in a sedimentary basin, it is the commercial and industrial center of Mongolia and contains many vulnerable buildings. Also, the city is growing with a new airport construction near the fault Sharkhai area where the city will extend very quickly.

Evolução dos sistemas eólicos costeiros quaternários entre Campo Bom e a foz do Rio Araranguá, SC / not available

Rodrigues, Fernanda Costa Gonçalves 23 June 2017 (has links)
South Santa Catarina coastal eolian system was subdivided into inactive and active. The inactive system is composed by undifferentiated eolian deposits (UED), sandsheets and dunefields. The active system has three associations of morphological elements: beach-dune, deflation plain and dunefield. The UED occur preferentially associated with elongated interfluves in the SW-NE direction. They constitute the substratum for other eolian deposits and present minimum optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages between 625 ky and 134 ky. The sandsheets correspond to terraces, with gentle undulations about 10 m long and up to 3 m high. Their deposition started at 22 ka, during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), when the lowering of the erosion base level probably favored non-cohesive sand availability as well the excavation of incised valleys which later would be drowned forming the Uruçanga-Araranguá estuarine-lagoon system. The last sandsheets were deposited around 5 ky, during the end of the Holocene marine transgression, when the establishment of a coastal context in the region, with approximately stable coastline, allowed the initiation of dunefields. The inactive dunefield presents depositional lobes, barchanoid chains and precipitation ridges, dated between 6.1 ky and 2.3 ky. It was responsible for the damming of the main lakes in the study area and its progradation occurred in pulses, as a response to the Holocene regression. Its progradation rate decreased after 4 ky, when a millenial phase of increase in precipitation and in coastal regression ended in the region. As for the active eolian system, the beach-dune association is characterized by dissipative beaches and foredune ridges, whereas the deflation plain is composed by gegenwalles associated with the advance of the dunefield, residual trailing ridges, blowouts and parabolic dunes. The dunefield appears as sand bodies formed by precipitation ridges, barchanoid chains and depositional lobes, detached from its source area (beach-dune association) by the deflation plain. The active system changed its morphodynamic state from 1938 to today. Between 1938 and 1957, it was characterized by sand saturation of almost 90% and direct connection between beach-dune and dunefield associations; currently beach and dunefield are separated by the deflation plain and the sand saturation is only 30%. In this time scale, of the last 60 years, the ongoing process of stabilization of the eolian system is conditioned by increase in pluviosity and decrease in eolian drift.

Análise morfológica da evolução da captura do rio Guaratuba (Bertioga-SP) através da técnica de datação por luminescência opticamente estimulada (LOE) / Morphological analysis of the evolution of the Guaratuba River Capture (Bertioga SP) using the Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating technique

Neves, Fernanda Volpon 09 October 2012 (has links)
The Serra do Mar mountain range belongs to the Brazilian coastal complex which runs from the state of Santa Catarina to Rio de Janeiro. Its relief has peculiar features, derived from a recent tectonism with accelerated weathering process, which leads to distinct features throughout the complex of the Serra do Mar. The evolution of this relief results in the drainage adequacy to the failures and disruptions found in the rocks. Therefore, the evolution of the Serra do Mar and understanding of drainage anomalies, such as the Guaratuba upper river fluvial capture, becomes the point of investigation in this research, using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) for dating. For the development of the research, the relief was divided into three geomorphologic compartments (Plateau, Guaratuba upper river plain, Borders and Scarp of the Serra do Mar). The compartmentation was developed in compliance with the morphologies and local drainage, based on the Ab\'Saber Theory (1969) on how to study the Quaternary. Thematic maps were drawn (slope, hypsometry, orientation of the strands, etc.) for a visual basis of the theory discussed in the thesis, linking them to the points of sample collection. From the relief compartmentation a field activity was carried out for the collection of sedimentary material of possible sections of the old riverbed. The samples were processed in the laboratory through the technique of dating OSL, using the single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR). Samples were chemically worked out to obtain the quartz grain in its pure form. From the data acquired through dating, the information was analyzed on spreadsheets and software focused on the interpretation of data. The values achieved were discussed throughout the thesis research to explain any positive XI and negative results of the samples. The data obtained agree with the literature on the geomorphological evolution of the Serra do Mar that is presented in the thesis.

Mendes, Vinicius Ribau 04 May 2012 (has links)
This master dissertation refers to five areas withactive and stabilized eolian dune fields in the central coast of the Santa Catarina State, southernBrazil. In this region, a recent tendency to stabilization of active dune fields is inferred from the comparison between aerial photographs of different years. Meteorological data obtained between 1962 and 2010, including daily records of rainfall, wind intensity and wind direction, indicate increasing precipitation and weakening wind to this period. The combination of these two factors inhibits the eolian sediment transport to the dune field, as effect of increasing sand cohesion by wetting and vegetal colonization in deflation zones. Being persistent in the last three decades, these factorshave reduced gradually the sand areas exposed to eolian reworking and decreased more and more the effective eolian drift, culminating in the stabilization of dune fields. The sedimentary deposits of eolian dunes and paleodunes were grouped, by morphological, stratigraphic, granulometric and mineralogical criteria in four generations (G1 to G4), analogous to that previously recognized in the literature. The older generation (G1) has a wider age distribution than previously thought and can be subdivided regarding the geochronological aspect. The grain-size analysis data indicate trends of sediment coarsening, better sorting and more positive skewness, from the older to the younger generation, what is attributed to the influence of successive reworking of sediments between generations, withoutdiscarding the effect of changes in the transport energy and/or beach morphodynamics. The ages of the three older generations obtained by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) method show coincidence with contexts of stable coastline and with climate in transition from less to more wet. The observed relationship between the OSL ages andthe relative sea level (RSL) and paleoprecipitation curves, besides the model of recent dune stabilization by the wet increasing and wind energy decreasing, allow us to suggest that the initiation of the dune fields in their different generations, in this coastal region, can be favoredby moments of stable and / or in reversal trend RSL, as well by less humid and more windy weather. In other hand, the stabilization of the dune fields would be favored by higher RSL, increasing rain and decreasing wind intensity. From the perspective of climate control, the mentioned condition to initiation of dune fields agree with moments of weakening of the South America Summer Monsoon System (SASM), related to warmer periods in the northern hemisphere. Analogously, the favorablecondition for the stabilization of dune fields would coincide with moments of intensification of the SASM, related to colder periods in the northern hemisphere.
