Clay mineral origin and distribution on Astoria Fan

Clay minerals from sediment samples obtained on Astoria Fan were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Clay minerals are defined for the purpose of this study as crystalline phyllosilicates less than two microns in equivalent settling diameter. The clay minerals are subdivided into the five common families: montmorillonite, chlorite, vermiculite, illite, and kaolinite. One X-ray scan of a magnesium ion saturated, ethylene glycol treated sample was sufficient for the identification of all the clay minerals. A typical Recent hemipelagic sediment contains about 40 percent montmorillonite, 30 percent illite, and 30 percent chlorite. Neither kaolinite nor vermiculite is detectable in these samples. These concentrations are similar to those reported for Columbia River sediments. The surface sediments have an identical clay mineral assemblage from the head of Astoria Canyon to the outer edge of the fan approximately 250 kilometers offshore. All of the Recent sediments in piston cores from Astoria Fan are the same as the surface sediments on the fan. This similarity indicates an unchanging source during Recent time and a lack of any visible marine diagenesis after burial. X-ray traces of Pleistocene clay minerals are distinctly different from those of the Recent. One can use this change in clay mineralogy as a time marker across the fan. Presumably the Pleistocene clays were formed under different weathering conditions caused by different climatic conditions. / Graduation date: 1967

Chemico-oceanographical parameters of the Central North Pacific Ocean

Data from the Surveyor 1968 Spring cruise were used to study the vertical distribution of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, apparent oxygen utilization, pH, alkalinity, specific alkalinity and percent saturation of calcite in two sections, one along 162°W from 35°N to 45°N and the other along 180°W from 35°N to 50°N. Data from this cruise and additional data from the Surveyor 1968 Fall cruise, YALOC 66 cruise (summer) (Barstowetal, , 1968) and Boreas cruise (winter, 1966) (SIO reports, 1966) were used to study the distribution of salinity, temperature, apparent oxygen utilization, preformed phosphate and depth on the sigma-t surfaces of 26.8 and 27.3 in an area between 35°N and 52°N and 162°W and 155°E. In both sections the vertical distribution of the physico-chemical parameters is such that in general there is a tendency for the isograms to slope upward from south to north following the same trend of the sigma-t surfaces. This indicates that mixing and advection along the sigma-t surfaces play an important role on the distribution of these parameters. AOU data from YALOC 66 cruise (summer) compared to that from Surveyor 1968 Spring cruise suggest that aeration by mixing, eddy diffusivity and conductivity takes place to more than 500 meters depth at about 50°N. It also suggests that the changes of organic primary production at the euphotic zone during different seasons of the year may affect to a great extent the AOU distribution on the 26.8 sigma-t surface and to a very small extent on the 27.3 sigma-t surface. The direction of flow suggested by the AOU distribution on the 26.8 and 27.3 sigma-t surfaces was compared to that indicated by the acceleration potential contours on the S[subscript t] = 125 cl/ton and S[subscript t] = 80 cl/ton surfaces drawn by Reid (1965). The disagreements were explained in terms of mixing and possible gradients of primary production at the sea surface. On the 26.8 sigma-t surface a southward flow connecting the westward flow south of the Aleutian chain and the eastward flow farther south, between 175°E and 180°W is suggested by the AOU distribution but not by the acceleration potential contours. If the circulation pattern at this density surface is similar to that at the sea surface, this linkage is very likely to be real. / Graduation date: 1970

Accumulation and toxicity of metals in oysters (Striostrea margaritacea) from the South African South Coast

Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the MTech: Oceanography in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, 2013 / The current status of metal pollution off the South African South coast is not well known. This study was the first to be undertaken in many years using Striostrea margaritacea as a subject species. The aims of the study were to determine the degree of metal contamination in the water, sediments, oyster tissues and oyster shells at sites selected in Witsand, Wilderness and Goukamma, as well as to establish if Striostrea margaritacea qualifies as a successful biomonitor when using lysosomal destabilization as a tool. Seasonal variations between sites were also considered. Other objectives, such as the potential of a Marine Protected Area (MPA) as a control site and the necessity of a monitoring program along the south coast were also included. Sites were sampled seasonally for one year at spring low tides. Ten oysters were collected from each individual site upon each visit. The Neutral Red Retention Time (NRRT) assay was used to determine lysosomal membrane integrity of oyster haemocytes, whereafter oysters were sacrificed for metal analyses. Metals that were analysed are aluminium (Al), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). Metal analyses were done using an Inductively Coupled Plasma - Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP- AES). All statistical analyses were performed using ANOVA on Ranks to determine if there were significant differences between sites and between sampling occasions. Aluminium concentrations found in the water column at all sites were considered as low. Iron, zinc and copper concentrations within the water column can on the other hand be considered as high when comparisons are drawn with other studies and data sets. Sediment concentrations for all the metals within the present study were considered to be low when compared to other studies and guidelines. There were not many significant differences recorded between sites and no seasonal patterns were present. Within the tissues of the oysters, the metal ranges are considered to be low when compared to other studies. No definite conclusion about the contamination status of the oyster tissue could be drawn due to the lack of comparative literature. A field study in conjunction with a laboratory experiment should yield more reliable results. There were also no seasonal trends present and very few differences between sites. The bioaccumulation factors were considered as being low with a few exceptions where they were moderate when oyster tissue data was compared to water and sediment data. Concentrations for Al, Zn and Cu in the shells could be considered low when comparisons are drawn, with the exception of Fe that was found to be high. The bioaccumulation factors were considered to be low when oyster shell concentrations were compared to water and sediment data. There were also no seasonal trends present and a prolonged sampling period is suggested to further investigate these findings. When a comparison was drawn between the tissue and shell data a clear pattern was evident. Al and Fe concentrations were highest within the shell where as Zn and Cu concentrations were highest within the tissues of the animal. The theory of mineralization is supported by these findings where bivalves will use their shell as a reservoir for micronutrients and other substances. The NRRT assay revealed that lysosomal membrane destabilization had occurred and that the animals appeared to be stressed for the duration of the sampling period. Site 3, within the MPA, had the longest retention time. The retention times that were recorded were short when compared to other studies. This assay did however show potential as a basic monitoring tool from which more thorough investigations can be initiated. In conclusion, the study sites along the south coast of South Africa does not seem to be contaminated by Al, Zn, Cu or Fe when data is compared to international and local water quality guidelines, sediment quality guidelines and other studies. Also, as concentrations between sites did not differ greatly, it is inconclusive whether or not the MPA can be used as a reliable references site for in situ studies. More vigorous and lengthy studies should be undertaken to contribute to current knowledge of our indigenous species, Striostrea margaritacea and to aid in the development of better management of this resource as well as an ongoing monitoring programme.

Temperature microstructure in Howe Sound

Temperature microstructure observations obtained in Howe Sound are presented and related to their oceanographic context, In some instances, two free-falling probes have been launched simultaneously with separations of 10 to 20 m at the surface in an attempt to look at the lateral extent of temperature microstructure features. Patches of temperature gradient variance were found where the gradient presented peak values of both signs at smaller scales. These patches were usually observed by one probe only and seem to extend laterally over less than 20 m. In other instances the peak gradient values took mostly the same sign within a given patch. Such patches were usually detected by both probes, indicating that their horizontal extent is significantly larger than 20 m. These types of temperature microstructure are also discussed in terms of mechanisms that could provide an explanation for their existence. In Howe Sound's Inner Basin, the Deep Water occasionally receives large influxes of water from the Strait of Georgia. Otherwise, it stays essentially trapped behind a 75 m deep sill and becomes more homogeneous with time. A model is presented which relates the rate at which temperature becomes homogeneous to temperature gradient variance and the molecular coefficient of heat diffusion. Predictors of users' preferences for digital information at the oceanographic research institute (ORI), Durban.

This research was a case study that investigated predictors of users’ preferences for digital information at the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) Library in Durban, South Africa. The objectives of the study were to determine the predictors of users’ preferences for digital information, examine user attitude towards use of digital information, evaluate user competencies in the use of digital information, examine available ICT infrastructure to facilitate access to digital information and assess usage patterns of electronic resources. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used to underpin the study, using the mixed method paradigm consisting of qualitative and quantitative methods. A census of the study population, consisting of 26 respondents, was taken. Data was collected using focus group discussions, semi-structured interviews, participant observations, document reviews and survey questionnaires. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data was analysed thematically. The findings of the study indicated that there was increasing preference of digital information to print by scholars. Moreover, usage of digital information was high by virtue of being easy to use and useful for scholarly work. The findings revealed that scholars had developed a positive attitude towards digital information. In addition, user experience with computers and the availability of infrastructure within the organisation were found to be facilitating conditions for digital information usage behaviour. The findings showed that respondents lacked relevant skills for the effective use of digital information and the ORI Library lacked adequate computers and electronic resources to satisfy user needs. The study recommended the development of a digital repository, user training to improve use of digital information resources. Suggested areas for research included examining the use of electronic resources in marine and aquatic institutions in Africa to establish grounds for collaborations and resource sharing. The ecology of scattering layer biota around Indian Ocean seamounts and islands

The waters of the open ocean constitute the largest living space on Earth but despite its obvious significance to the biosphere, the open ocean remains an unexplored frontier. With a regional focus on the Indian Ocean, this thesis investigates (i) the distribution of pelagic biota on basin scales, (ii) the effect of abrupt topography on pelagic biota and their predator-prey relationships, and (iii) the use of genetic techniques to elucidate population connectivity and dispersal of pelagic taxa. (i) Pelagic scattering layers (SLs) were surveyed with scientific echosounders across the southwest (SWIO) and central Indian Ocean to investigate their vertical and geographical distribution. Structurally distinct SL regimes were found across the Subantarctic Front, and may explain recently observed foraging behaviours of southern elephant seals. Regression models indicated a close relationship between sea surface temperature and mean volume backscatter, with significantly elevated backscatter in the subtropical convergence zone. The heterogeneous distribution of scattering layer biota may have implications for predator foraging and carbon cycling in the Indian Ocean. (ii) Acoustic surveys revealed diverse interactions between SLs, aggregations and topography around islands as well as shallow ( < 200m) and intermediate (200-800m) seamounts at spatial scales from 1 to 100 km. Epi-and mesopelagic backscatter was increased around reefs and banks of the Chagos archipelago, indicating connectivity between oceanic and neritic systems. SWIO seamounts harboured summit-associated aggregations, but the distributions of surrounding SLs did not follow a general pattern. Downstream SL depletion was observed in one location and combined with stomach content analyses, provides an insight into the mechanics of prey flux between open-ocean and seamount ecosystems. (iii) A mitochondrial marker was used to assess the population structure and demography of the hatchetfish Argyropelecus aculeatus in the SWIO. The results are suggestive of a single, well-connected population and indicate a recent population expansion around 0.14 million years ago. This highlights that even highly abundant mesopelagic populations are vulnerable to global climatic changes. Dispersal and recruitment are key ecological processes structuring seamount communities and are directly relevant for the management of exploited populations. Genetic barcoding was evaluated as a means to identify cryptic larval specimens of eels (leptocephali) and spiny lobsters (phyllosomata). Identification success was limited, but indicated the presence of 3-4 phyllosoma clades and 5-6 leptocephalus clades along the SWIR.
