Previous issue date: 2013-06-07 / REUNI / This work aims to, between other objectives, analyze the disputes of memory among the years 1963-1990, of the conflict that involved police and inhabitants of the village of Ipatinga and occurred in one of the gates of Usiminas in the morning of October 7, 1963. The official reports about the episode say that, as a result of the moments of tension, shots were made toward the crowd that had stayed in front of the steel plant, resulting in hospitalization of dozens of people and in the death of eight others. Our goal is to analyze how the memories and narratives of these historical events have been influenced by the historical contexts of the following decades, especially during the brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985) and later process of Redemocratiza??o. In this historical period, we observed that economic, political and social factors contributed to that during the 60?s and 70?s, the "tragic events of 1963" passed by silencing processes, which also lined to plans of local authorities to control closely the labor movement in steel plant and disseminating an ideal of progress and social harmony in the region. However, in the next decade, with the strengthening of new political and social groups in the city of Ipatinga, the narratives of the "protests and deaths of 1963", get recovered and recollected by the perspectives and motivations of this different historical moment.
