Investigation of Two Polarimetric Optical Strain Sensors

Vulovic, Boris 03 1900 (has links)
This thesis presents a theoretical description and experimental testing of two polarimetric fiber-optic strain sensors. 'The first .of these is an intrinsic sensor in which a single mode optical fiber acts as the sensing element. This sensor exhibited low strain sensitivity and high cross-sensitivity to temperature. The second sensor was of the extrinsic type, A single polarization maintaining fiber was used to deliver and collect light from the sensing element, which a was piece of photoelastic sheet PS-1. This type of sensor exhibited large dynamic range of 1:1350, resolution of 0.59ps, and strain sensitivity of the normalized signal of0.00219pe+1. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

The development of a hand-held optical diffraction strain gauge

Creasey, Christopher David January 1998 (has links)
The measurement of strain is critical in many engineering design, test, and health monitoring procedures. Despite the promise of non-contacting and remote strain measurement, optical techniques have not been widely adopted by industry; the preference being the use of electrical resistance strain gauges. This is due to the perceived and real complexities of many optical techniques.

Automatic Macro- and Micro-Facial Expression Spotting and Applications

Shreve, Matthew Adam 01 January 2013 (has links)
Automatically determining the temporal characteristics of facial expressions has extensive application domains such as human-machine interfaces for emotion recognition, face identification, as well as medical analysis. However, many papers in the literature have not addressed the step of determining when such expressions occur. This dissertation is focused on the problem of automatically segmenting macro- and micro-expressions frames (or retrieving the expression intervals) in video sequences, without the need for training a model on a specific subset of such expressions. The proposed method exploits the non-rigid facial motion that occurs during facial expressions by modeling the strain observed during the elastic deformation of facial skin tissue. The method is capable of spotting both macro expressions which are typically associated with emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, and surprise, and rapid micro- expressions which are typically, but not always, associated with semi-suppressed macro-expressions. Additionally, we have used this method to automatically retrieve strain maps generated from peak expressions for human identification. This dissertation also contributes a novel 3-D surface strain estimation algorithm using commodity 3-D sensors aligned with an HD camera. We demonstrate the feasibility of the method, as well as the improvements gained when using 3-D, by providing empirical and quantitative comparisons between 2-D and 3-D strain estimations.

On the Experimental Determination of Damping of Metals and Calculation of Thermal Stresses in Solidifying Shells

Åberg, Jonas January 2006 (has links)
This thesis explores experimentally and theoretically two different aspects of the properties and behaviour of metals: their ability to damp noise and their susceptibility to crack when solidifying. The first part concerns intrinsic material damping, and is motivated by increased demands from society for reductions in noise emissions. It is a material’s inherent ability to reduce its vibration level, and hence noise emission, and transform its kinetic energy into a temperature increase. To design new materials with increased intrinsic material damping, we need to be able to measure it. In this thesis, different methods for measurement of the intrinsic damping have been considered: one using Fourier analysis has been experimentally evaluated, and another using a specimen in uniaxial tension to measure the phase-lag between stress and strain has been improved. Finally, after discarding these methods, a new method has been developed. The new method measures the damping properties during compression using differential calorimetry. A specimen is subjected to a cyclic uniaxial stress to give a prescribed energy input. The difference in temperature between a specimen under stress and a non-stressed reference sample is measured. The experiments are performed in an insulated vacuum container to reduce convective losses. The rate of temperature change, together with the energy input, is used as a measure of the intrinsic material damping in the specimen. The results show a difference in intrinsic material damping, and the way in which it is influenced by the internal structure is discussed. The second part of the thesis examines hot cracks in solidifying shells. Most metals have a brittle region starting in the two-phase temperature range during solidification and for some alloys this region extends as far as hundreds of degrees below the solidus temperature. To calculate the risk of hot cracking, one needs, besides knowledge of the solidifying material’s ability to withstand stress, knowledge of the casting process to be able to calculate the thermal history of the solidification, and from this calculate the stress. In this work, experimental methods to measure and evaluate the energy transfer from the solidifying melt have been developed. The evaluated data has been used as a boundary condition to numerically calculate the solidification process and the evolving stress in the solidifying shell. A solidification model has been implemented using a fixed-domain methodology in a commercial finite element code, Comsol Multiphysics. A new solidification model using an arbitrary Lagrange Eulerian (ALE) formulation has also been implemented to solve the solidification problem for pure metals. This new model explicitly tracks the movement of the liquid/solid interface and is much more effective than the first model. / QC 20100929

Lima, Toni Roger Schifelbain de January 2011 (has links)
The use of fracture mechanics has become increasingly popular in damage tolerance analysis or during determination of load limits in engineering components and structures. Nevertheless, the success of applying the concepts of fracture mechanics to investigate structural integrity assessment is highly dependent upon the correct determination of fracture mechanics material properties. The accurate prediction of ductile fracture behavior plays an important role in structural integrity assessment of critical engineering structures, including nuclear reactors, petrochemical vessels and tanks, pipelines in oil and gas industries and aircraft structures. J-R curve has become the most popular material parameters in elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and has been applied widely in practical engineering. There are procedures to determine J-R curves and they are widely presented in books and international standards. However, these procedures sometimes present some practical limitations or restrictions which have prompted research effort to develop alternative methods. In this work the hypothesis that is possible to develop a methodology to determinate J-R curve to materials with elastic-plastic behavior from analysis of near crack tip strain field was verified. For this purpose, an optical strain measurement system (OSMS) was used in order to monitor strains on surface of SE(B) specimens during fracture toughness testing. The methodology was applied to a laser welded joint of API X65 steel. The measurements successfully evaluate the strain field during testing. Besides of this, the methodology proposed allowed the determination of mathematical expressions to associate strain values with values of J-integral and crack extension (Δa). These expressions are valid to characterize these fracture toughness parameters to any one of the three distinct regions of the weld joint and made possible to determine J-R curve by monitoring the surface strain field evolution during a testing of a single specimen.

Weisbrich, Martin 29 January 2021 (has links)
Distributed fiber optic sensor (DFOS) technology based on Rayleigh scattering is a unique and promising method for strain measurement in concrete structures as well as structural health monitoring (SHM). It can detect the smallest strain changes at any point in the measuring fiber with a high spatial resolution and sensitivity. Currently, there exist no material and handling recommendations for a reliable application, and the literature contains contradictory statements on strain transfer losses between substrate and fiber. The present study deals with the validation of this measuring method for scenarios in concrete structures. Besides applications on steel and concrete surfaces, the integration in a concrete matrix was investigated. The validation yields results for strain transfer losses for different fiber coatings or fiber coating/adhesive combinations. Furthermore, the development of an evaluation method using the computer language Python provides automated data preparation and measurement error substitution of the enormous data volumes. For the validation on steel surfaces, the strain values of different coating-adhesive combinations on precision flat steels were compared in a 4-point bending test with a photogrammetric strain measurement. For the validation on concrete surfaces, concrete pressure cylinders were used to investigate the influence of a primer and different coating-adhesive combinations. Inductive displacement transducers served as a comparative measuring technique during the compression tests. Shrinkage tests allowed the validation of different coating materials in a matrix on concrete prisms. Digital dial gauges were used as a comparative measuring method. For evaluation purposes, the material and handling recommendations derived from the validation were tested on concrete beams. The results of the validation tests indicate good results regarding strain transfer with an Ormocer coating. For application as tested , the use of a cyanoacrylate adhesive is recommended -- especially M-Bond 200 was convincing due to its low strain losses. Concrete surfaces should be sanded and primed with epoxy resin. If integrated into a concrete matrix, the Ormocer fibers also showed minor differences from the comparative measurement. The results of the evaluation tests verify the handling and material recommendations: the strain values of the fibers correspond to the values obtained in concrete-beam analysis. Oscillations of the strain profile due to microstructural disturbances could only be detected at the load application points. Further research regarding the validation of additional components (adhesives, coating, primer) and their long-term stability, especially chemical and dynamic loads, is necessary. This study provides an overview of different coating and adhesives. However, the repertoire of available components is immense - especially for adhesives. During the validation on concrete surfaces and in matrix, a fine-grained concrete mixture was used. In this respect, different matrices and grain sizes should be the subject of further research.
