Optimal Operational Strategy Design of a Single-sided Permanent Magnet Axial-flux Motor

Lin, Shih-Chao 07 July 2004 (has links)
This thesis presents a systematic scheme to determine the optimal propulsive/axial force ratio of a single-sided permanent magnet axial-flux motor (SPMAM) along with its operational constraints on both the winding currents and the speed induced voltages. According to the rotating magnetic field theory with combining the recoil line characteristics of permanent magnet and the equivalent operational magnetic circuits, appropriate projection of the stator currents to achieve an optimal ratio of the machine propulsive/axial forces has been confirmed through detailed three-dimensional finite element analysis (3-D FEA) and numerical studies. From these evaluations, a feasible operational guidance for SPMAM field oriented control (FOC) scheme realizations can be suitably provided. Finally, based on the proposed optimal scheme, a DSP-based drive system has been successfully implemented, and the desired operational strategy realization can be achieved.

Suppressing Coherence Collapse of Semiconductor Laser with Orthogonal Polarization Optical Feedback

Lin, Jian-yu 05 July 2005 (has links)
The coherence of a semiconductor laser subjected to a coherent optical feedback of greater than -30 dB will collapse, causing the laser¡¦s performance in many applications to be severely degraded. This research investigated the feasibility of suppression the coherence collapse with orthogonal-polarization optical feedback. In the experiments, we first studied the characteristics of coherence collapse state of semiconductor laser. Under an operational condition of 63.9 mA, 21.9¢J and -11 dB of coherent optical feedback, a Hitachi HLP 7806G semiconductor laser would be conducted from its solitary single-mode state into a multimode oscillation state with a very broad linewidth. At the same time, the relative intensity noise measured from the RF spectrum analyzer drastically raised about 15 dB. When a -16 dB and a -23 dB orthogonal-polarization optical feedback were fed back into the laser¡¦s cavity. The coherence collapse could be effectively suppressed, while the laser was conducted back to its solitary single-mode state stably. This result will greatly increase the application of the laser. Some experiments were also reported to explore the interaction between the laser and the orthogonal-polarization feedback light.

Investigation on Pulse Charging Characteristics of Lead-Acid Batteries

Cheng, Jung-Chieh 16 June 2003 (has links)
This thesis investigates the performance of pulse charging, which is believed to be superior to constant current charging in some respects, such as charging efficiency and charging speed. The investigation is focused upon the extensively used secondary batteries, lead-acid batteries. The consecutive orthogonal arrays method is applied to search for the optimum operating variables of pulse charging, including pulse amplitude, duty ratio and frequency of the charging current. Unfortunately, the experimental results of consecutive orthogonal arrays reveal that charging efficiency is not obviously affected by pulse amplitude, duty ratio or frequency. Instead, charging rate is dominantly influenced by average charging current. These results indicate that pulse charging scheme is not superior to constant current charging. To compare these two charging schemes further, a series of experiments are carried out to discuss the effects of each operating variables. Unfortunately, no evidence from the experimental results can prove the superiority of pulse charging to constant current charging as formerly documented.
