No exame físico todas as amostras tinham coloração amarela, embora 35,11% (79/225) apresentavam aspecto turvo. A densidade urinária permaneceu entre 1017 a 1039. The acidification of the urine has shown to be a practical and efficient method to prevent the formation of uroliths in sheep. This study had the objective of evaluating the efficiency of the administration of ammonium chloride (GA group), ascorbic acid (GC group) and the association of both products (GAC group) in the urinary acidification observing the necessary time for pH reduction, its intensity and alterations in the urinalysis. Forty-five (45) clinically healthy sheep aged between 4 months and one year old were used. After a previous 15-day adaptation regarding feeding and environment, ammonium chloride was administered - a dose of 10g/day/animal – and also ascorbic acid – a dose of 4mg/kg/day/animal – and the association of both products (10g of ammonia chloride + 4mg/kg of ascorbic acid/day/animal) in three distinct groups, during 21 days, both orally. Material was collected at the M1; M2; M3; M4 and M5 moments, with an interval of seven days, for evaluation of the pH and urinalysis, and daily at the M2a; M2b;M2c; M2d; M2e; M2f; M3a; M3b; M3c; M3d; M3e and M3f moments only the pH values were checked. The GA and GAC groups presented pH acidification two days after the beginning of the treatment (M2b moment) and kept it until the end of the treatment (M5 moment). The GC group presented an oscillation between alkaline and acid pH and only at M3 it presented a pH below the initial value. In the urinalysis the results found were within the normal range for sheep. At the physical exam all the samples had a yellow color, although 35,11% (79/225) presented a turbid aspect. The urinary density remained between 1017 and 1039. At the chemical exam the urine... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
