The theoretical part is based on the studies of Fredric Jameson, David Harvey and Steven Connor with the purpose of understanding the discontinuity which the characters try to escape. In this first part, the idea of waning of affect, the problem of change of perspective in relation to time and space witnessed in postmodernism, as well as metafiction are discussed. Finally, the novel written by Douglas Coupland is analyzed, establishing relations between the construction of the characters and the narrative itself trying to demonstrate how the author tackled the issue of fragmentation in the late capitalist society.
