In conclusion it may be said that contrary to the results of the fractionation obtained from the fractionation of cellulose xanthate diethylacetamide by Fink, Stahn, and Matthes; the results obtained here indicate that there is a definite variation of the degree of substitution from fraction to fraction. And that therefore cellulose xanthate as commercially prepared is heterogeneous with respect to degree of polymerization and degree of substitution. There does seem to be a definite relationship of some sort between the two factors, the degrees of polymerization and substitution. Fractionation as accomplished here is controlled by both the degree of polymerization and the degree of substitution and at no time is it likely that either factor is independent of the other. In fact, there is a strong probability that the degrees of polymerization determined are only apparent degrees of polymerizations controlled by the variations in substitution. It is known that the viscosity of compound in solution is a function of the degree of substitution; to what extent is unknown. / M.S.

Photoinduced Fresnel reflectors in germanium-doped optical fibersPlante, Angela J. 16 June 2009 (has links)
A novel method of fabricating low reflectance mirrors has been developed based on the photosensitivity of hydrogen-loaded, germanium-doped optical fibers. Using a side-writing technique, point-wise refractive index changes have been induced in the core of Ge-doped optical fibers via ultraviolet light from a high power excimer laser. These refractive index changes cause Fresnel reflections at the boundary of the higher photoinduced index change and the lower index in the unexposed core. The boundary of the two refractive indices may be considered a low reflectance mirror. Several techniques have been explored to characterize the Fresnel reflectors including optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) and spectral analysis. In-line, optical fiber Fresnel reflectors have applications as internal mirrors in intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (IFPI) sensors and OTDR distributed strain sensors. Photoinduced IFPI sensors have performed well as temperature sensors, strain sensors, and vibration sensors. Improved manufacturing techniques are also discussed for future developments.
The photoinduced IFPI sensor is inexpensive to manufacture and involves little skill, in contrast to the labor-intensive fabrication techniques of conventional IFPI sensors. The IFPI sensor has commercial applications in embedded structures, high temperature environments, and situations with large EMI conditions. / Master of Science

An Event-related Potential Investigation on Associative Encoding and the Effects of Intra-list Semantic SimilarityKim, Alice Sun-Nam 14 July 2009 (has links)
Event-related potentials were recorded as subjects were presented with pairs of words, one word at a time, to examine the electrocortical manifestations of association formation and the effect of intra-list semantic similarity. Two types of lists were presented: Same – all pairs belonged to the same semantic category; Different – all pairs belonged to a different semantic category. Subjects were told to memorize the pairs for a following paired associate recall test. Recall was better for the Different than Same lists. Subsequent recall was predicted by the amplitudes of a potential lasting throughout the epoch and the P555 to each word of a pair (likely reflecting state- and item-related encoding activity, respectively), as well as a late positive wave that occurred after the offset of the second word, which is thought to reflect association formation. A larger N425 was elicited by pairs in the Different than Same lists, likely reflecting semantic integration.
