It is based on data gathered through personal observation and through interviews with Protestant and non-Protestant inmates. Its goal is to analyze how Pentecostal believers get adapted, both as individuals and as a group, to the prison institution, how they construct and maintain their religious identity in the penitentiaries, what strategies they use to deal with the stigma of being convicts and to solve problems of conscience related to their responsibility for their past criminal acts as well as the reasons for their religious conversion or reconversion within prison. For that purpose, I briefly describe the context of penal institutions, penal enforcement and Pentecostal expansion in the aforementioned penitentiaries. I analyze the daily lives of Protestant prisoners, their religious practices, proselytizing activities, relations with the other inmates, how they resume their relations with their families and their expectations for the future.
