A microprobe study of metalliferous sediment components

Eklund, William Alan 09 August 1973 (has links)
Examination of polished sections of manganese micronodules from metalliferous sediments from the Bauer Deep reveals sequences of ferromanganese deposition which are consistent for micronodules from a single sediment sample and imply a common depositional history for members of such assemblages. The relatively simple 'stratigraphy' of manganese micronodules, as compared to macronodules, makes stratigraphic correlation of depositional histories easier and more conclusive for micronodules than macronodules. Quantitative microprobe analysis and X-ray mircodiffraction patterns indicate that the major authigenic silicate component of metalliferous sediment is an iron- and magnesium-rich, low-aluminum nontronite. Microprobe and X-ray microdiffraction analyses of manganese micronodules establish todorokite as the predominant crystalline component. Comparison of the distributions of lanthanum, cerium, and samarium in micronodules and phosphatic fish debris indicates that bulk sediment REE distribution is determined by the relative abundances of cerium-enriched micronodules and cerium-depleted biogenic phosphate. / Graduation date: 1974

Analysis of meteorological and oceanographic data from Ocean Station Vessel N (30N 140W)

Dorman, Clive Edgar 11 January 1974 (has links)
The thesis examines the principal air-sea properties at Ocean Station Vessel N (30N 140W). In a descriptive section, meteorological and oceanographic data for N are analyzed over 20 years (1951-1970) and 7 years (1964-1970), respectively. A rainfall estimate is constructed for the 20 year period. The yearly average rainfall is 22 centimeters, far less than current estimates. Daily and seasonal variations are presented. Heat budgets of the surface show that the two decades are distinctly different. Anomalies of the 20 years of all meteorological variables are calculated. The pressure anomaly appears to be loosely correlated with anomalous large scale events in the equatorial dry zone. Time series cross-sections are shown of the mixed layer depth, bottle temperature and salinity. The near surface density appears to be largely controlled by temperature. Surface wind speed, air pressure, sea temperature, air temperature and dew point spectra for a 10-year period (1961-1970) are shown in a spectral section. Spectra are computed separately for the 4 seasons. Rotary spectra for the wind are also calculated. In a discussion of mixed layer dynamics, theoretical calculations indicate that salinity is not a significant factor in the Eastern subtropics. In a final section, Denman's mixed layer model is applied to two cases of data from N. It is found that Denman's model describes the local mixed layer changes in the one case where advective effects could be resolved. It is suggested that mixed layer extinction lengths for sunlight are shorter than previously believed--about 5 meters. Denman's mixed layer model appears applicable to local changes in the Eastern subtropics. / Graduation date: 1974

Near-inertial motions off the Oregon coast

Anderson, Iain 30 April 1982 (has links)
Nearly three months of current meter records from five moorings off the Oregon coast taken between October 1977 and January 1978 were analyzed for near-inertial motions. The moorings were located from the midshelf out to the foot of the continental slope, spanning the continental margin. All but two of the eleven current meters were continuously below the mixed layer. For spectral analysis, the current observation period was divided into two time periods, one with large amplitude near-inertial motion (41.1 cm/sec maximum of the band-passed records) throughout and the other with much less near-inertial energy. The spectra of the current meter records showed between a 1 and 6% increase in frequency of the near-inertial peak above f (= 0.0592 cph) in all but three cases. The exceptions showed spectral peaks about 14% below f and were linked to a Doppler shift. The period of large amplitude near-inertial motion had diagonal coherence scales of over 450 meters vertically and 115 kilometers horizontally. An east-west (cross-shelf) wavelength of about 50 kilometers was estimated directly from the phase differences between current meters with roughly horizontal separations. The observed response of a current meter about 35 meters below the mixed layer to sharp maxima in the wind stress was similar to that predicted by the Pollard and Millard (1970) model for wind forced near-inertial motions in the surface mixed layer. The winds associated with a series of atmospheric fronts were apparently responsible for generating a 14-day period of large amplitude near-inertial motion observed below the mixed layer. / Graduation date: 1982
