Changes in paleobiodiversity across the K-Pg boundary in Oktibbeha County, MississippiBroussard, Joshua 08 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Evidence of the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction can be seen across the Mississippi Embayment, however research examining the K-Pg boundary in the state of Mississippi is lacking. The objective of this study addresses how macrofauna changed across the K-Pg boundary in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi and subsequent comparison to other Early Paleogene and Late Cretaceous benthic marine macrofaunal localities. Comparison included previously collected material as well as specimens collected during this study in order to reconstruct the biological community living on the seafloor in the earliest Paleocene Mississippi Embayment. The primary fauna present after the K-Pg extinction was mainly composed of small suspension and deposit feeding oysters and clams as well as carnivorous gastropods. New Paleocene fauna and survivor species exhibited drastically smaller body sizes than organisms in the Cretaceous; postulated to be due to a relative decrease in primary producers and environmental nutrients.

Age and Paleontology of the Turin Pit locality, Monona County, IowaWright, Samantha 01 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The Turin Pit locality (Monona county, Iowa) has been known to paleontologists since 1908, yet the age of the fauna has been unclear. Early paleontologists considered Turin Pit to date to a pre-Illinoian interglacial (the “Aftonian).” Subsequent researchers suggested it dated to the last glaciation. This study provides a partial list of mammals in the Turin Pit fauna, and together with stratigraphic information, uses the known age ranges of taxa to estimate an age for the assemblage. The presence of Mammuthus, Aenocyon, and Castoroides combined with a magnetically-reversed till located stratigraphically above fossil-bearing deposits, suggest the Turin Pit assemblage dates between ~1.3 and 0.773 Ma. The fauna can be assigned to the Irvingtonian North American Land Mammal Age based on Mammuthus, Aenocyon, Castoroides, and Ondatra zibethicus annectens. This fossil assemblage provides a rare window into the Quaternary paleontology of Iowa that pre-dates the Illinoian glaciation.

Fossil Mammals from Hickory Tree Cave, Sullivan County, TennesseeRivera, Alexis 01 December 2022 (has links)
Hickory Tree Cave, also known as Big Spring Cave, is located in the southern Appalachians and is known for fossils that are considered to be Quaternary in age. Fossil mammals were identified and assigned to the lowest taxonomical level possible. Most remains are fragmented or digested and it seems likely that various taphonomic processes are responsible for the resulting assemblage. The site lacks the extreme boreal component of Pleistocene cave faunas in the region (e.g. Baker Bluff Cave), with most reported taxa inhabiting Appalachian deciduous forest environments in North America today. While the presence of tapir (Tapirus sp.) suggests a pre-Holocene component for the deposit, the lack of boreal taxa may indicate that deposition occurred during a relatively warm interval.
