An Early History of the Community of Park City, Utah

Jesperson, Oscar F., Jr. 01 January 1969 (has links) (PDF)
Park City, Utah, has been one of the most permanent mining camps in Utah. While constituting the industrial and population center of Summit County, it has contributed over one half billions dollars to the economies of Utah and the nation. This thesis deals with the early years of Park City, 1869-1910. This period saw an influx and combination of several ethnic groups which served to enrich the cultural history of Park City. Religion and social organizations were a major part of the life of this community. The political effect of this mining camp on Summit County and the Territory of Utah are analyzed. The social organization of Park City is examined as an island of gentiles within a Mormon theocracy. The municipal development is traced with special emphasis on the problems encountered and solutions attempted as the camp's citizens expressed themselves through their representatives on the City Council. The history of the business community is also studied in relation to the total development of the city. Park City's major problem and eventual decline was due solely to the drop in the price of silver.

The Unemployment and Reemployment Experiences of Displaced Workers Resulting From the Shutdown of Two Utah Mines: the Park City Ventures and the Burgin Mine

Davidson, Richard A. 01 May 1980 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to study the unemployment and reemployment experiences of displaced workers. Two mines were shut down in 1978 in Utah: the Park City Ventures Mine located in Park City and the Burgin ~line located in Eureka. Data were collected from questionnaires mailed to all the displaced workers of both mines and from personal interviews conducted with mine officials, officials of formal job-search agencies, and union representatives. The shutdoMl at Park City Ventures affected 350 workers, and the shutdown at the Burgin Mine affected 153. Both mines qualified for and were certified for Trade Readjustment Act benefits. The paper is divided into four major parts: personal characteristics, job-search activities, financial status and public assistance programs, and workers' subjective feelings, in that order.

Energy Efficiency in Cold-Weather High-End Custom Homes

Kearl, Joseph R. 06 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Nationally, there is increasing interest in energy efficient homes due to growing energy costs and increased awareness. However, many builders haven't yet incorporated energy saving products and practices into homes. Many builders don't have the resources to evaluate available options and prefer to rely on the experiences of other builders. The purpose of this study was to create energy efficiency benchmarks for cold-weather, high-end custom homes and evaluate current building practices. A list of energy-efficient products and practices was created through a review of relevant literature. A group of expert builders was formed into a committee to help determine energy inefficiencies in cold-weather, high-end custom homes. The committee also helped establish criteria used to evaluate building products and practices. Finally, the committee helped create a survey that was sent to a larger community of builders. Energy Star Builders in Colorado, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming were selected to take part in the survey. They were asked to evaluate their experience with energy-efficient products and practices and give recommendations in overcoming specific inefficiencies of cold-weather, high-end custom homes. Payback calculations were performed on the products and practices identified in the survey to further evaluate their importance. From the review of literature, interviews with the committee of experts, the builders' survey responses, and the payback calculations, a list of 22 energy efficiency benchmarks was created for building cold-weather, high-end custom homes.
