Although performance appraisals exist in most organisations, they are not implemented correctly. In many organisations the link between the performance appraisal ratings and the outcome is not so obvious. This has led to mistrust of the performance appraisal process by the users and the total process does not command the credibility it deserves. A summary of problems with performance appraisals systems and processes are as follows: Preparations prior to appraisal with staff are not adequate. Users of the system are not formally trained. Performance appraisal processes are often considered to be unpleasant and time consuming. The performance appraisal processes are subject to subjectivity. The rating scales and performance dimensions used in the systems are open to different interpretations due to lack of clear guidelines. / Prof. W. Backer

Investigation of police officer selection procedures

In the current dissertation, the relationship between police officer selection procedures and officer performance during the first year of employment was investigated within a metropolitan law enforcement agency. Ninety-two officers were followed during their first year of employment including the hiring process, academy and field training, and yearly evaluations. Data on education, aptitude, physical agility, personality, academy performance, supervisor ratings, and terminations were collected. The results reveal that the psychologists' recommendations predict whether or not an individual will leave the department before the completion of their first year as an officer. In addition, the aptitude test administered by the municipal human resources department accounted for the most variance in academy scores. The effects of non-musical components on the ratings of performance quality /

The purpose of this study was to determine whether certain non-musical components of a performance affect evaluator's performance quality ratings. Specifically, if there is an age at which point the presence of a music stand (i.e. an implied use of the score), the performers attractiveness, attire, stage behaviour and perceived level of accomplishment impacts performance ratings. Fourteen cellists were videotaped performing by memory, and then a second time with their music on a music stand, synchronizing their motions with the audio feedback from their first performance. The cellists and their performances were evaluated by 1024 individuals with no formal training in music ranging in age from six to fifty-five years old. Each evaluator was assigned to one of six groups: Visual only, Audio only, Memorized, Dubbed, Random 1, or Random 2. Results revealed that the presence or absence of a music stand had no impact on performance ratings. Performer attractiveness affected performance ratings for both sexes, although contrary to previous findings, being attractive was not advantageous. Dress had an inverse effect on ratings of female performers and poor stage behaviour affected ratings of both sexes. Although evaluators were unable to predict a performer's proficiency based solely on gesture, proficiency gestures made by musicians during performances affected ratings. Evaluators in the audiovisual conditions gave performers who appeared less accomplished significantly lower ratings than those in the audio only condition. Evaluators aged 13 were more critical than younger evaluators with their musical ratings and their ratings were also affected by the visual aspects of a performance. These results suggest that older non-musician evaluators use visual aspects to help their evaluations of subjective musical elements because they have a hard time hearing differences.

This study explores the status of marketing performance measurement in South Africa, by examining the perceptions, methods, challenges and status of organisations with regards to the advancement of marketing performance measurement. It researches five key problem areas, namely, the importance and awareness of marketing performance measurement; the methods managers use to measure marketing performance; the process these managers follow in selecting these methods; how advanced organisations are conceptually and practically in terms of measuring marketing performance, and finally the challenges managers face in measuring marketing performance in South Africa. Nine managers from eight medium to large South African firms were interviewed, ina qualitative study that possibly explores marketing performance measurement from this perspective, for the first time in South Africa.

An Analysis of the Efficiency of Social Assistance in Local Governments

The Social Welfare expenses of Taiwan local governments are not increasing to follow the social structure in the last few years. According to the increased social issues caused by poverty, people have the position to suspect that our government have not provided organized cares to help those people who suffer from poverty. This study focuses on analyzing the performance of social assistance in local governments and provides possible improvements. This study uses the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method, 5 input and 4 output data analysis, to evaluate the performances of social work in 23 local governments in Taiwan from 2004 to 2006. This evaluation includes CCR, BCC, scale efficiencies, scale-return, slack analysis, and delicacy analysis. From 2004 to 2006, the best management performance of social work is Tainan city and the second best is Kaohsiung city. The third best is Taipei city. The worst management performance of Social assistance is Tainan county and then Miaoli county. The third worst is Taoyuan county.
