Scalable Fabrication of High Efficiency Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells by Electrospray

Perovskite solar cells have attracted much attention both in research and industrial domains. An unprecedented progress in development of hybrid perovskite solar cells (HPSCs) has been seen in past few years. The power conversion efficiencies of HPSCs has been improved from 3.8% to 24.2% in less than a decade, rivaling that of silicon solar cells which currently dominate the solar cell market. Hybrid perovskite materials have exceptional opto-electrical properties and can be processed using cost-effective solution-based methods. In contrast, fabrication of silicon solar cells requires high-vacuum, high-temperature, and energy intensive processes. The combination of excellent opto-electrical properties and cost-effective manufacturing makes hybrid perovskite a winning candidate for solar cells. As power conversion efficiencies of HPSCs improves beyond that of the established solar cell technology and their long-term stability increases, one of the crucial hurdles in the path to commercialization remaining to be adequately addressed is the cost-effective scalable fabrication. Spin-coating is the prevailing method for fabrication of HPSCs in laboratories. However, this technique is limited to small areas and results in excessive material waste. Two types of scalable manufacturing methods have been successfully demonstrated to fabricate HPSCs: (i) meniscus-assisted coating such as doctor-blade coating and slot-die coating; and (ii) dispersed deposition based on the coalescence of individual droplets, such as inkjet printing and spray coating. Electrospray printing belongs to the second category with advantages of high material utilization rate and patterning capability along with the scalability and roll-to-roll compatibility. In Chapter 3 of this dissertation, electrospray printing process is described for manufacturing of HPSCs in ambient conditions below 150 C. All three functional layers were printed using electrospray printing including perovskite layer, electron transport layer, and hole transport layer. Strategies for successful electrospray printing of HPSCs include formulation of the precursor inks with solvents of low vapor pressures, judicial choice of droplet flight time, and tailoring the wetting property of the substrate to suppress coffee ring effects. Implementation of these strategies leads to pin-hole free, low surface roughness, and uniform perovskite layer, hole transport layer and electron transport layer. The power conversion efficiency of the all electrospray printed device reached up to 15.0%, which is among the highest to date for fully printed HPSCs. The most efficient HPSCs rely on gold and organic hole-transport materials (HTMs) for achieving high performance. Gold is also chosen for its high stability. Unfortunately, the high price of gold and high-vacuum along with high-temperature processing requirements for gold film is not suitable for the large-scale fabrication of HPSCs. Carbon is a cheap alternative electrode material which is inert to hybrid perovskite layer. Due to the ambipolar transport property of hybrid perovskite, perovskite itself can act as a hole conductor, and the extra hole transport layer can be left out. Carbon films prepared by doctor-blade coating method have been reported as the top electrode in HPSCs. The efficiencies of these devices suffer from the poor interface between the doctor-blade coated carbon and the underlying perovskite layer. In Chapter 4, electrospray printing was applied for the fabrication of carbon films and by optimizing the working distance during electrospray printing, the interface between carbon and the underlying perovskite layer was greatly improved compared to the doctor-blade coated carbon film. The resulting HPSCs based on the electrospray printed carbon electrode achieved higher efficiency than that based on doctor-blade method and remarkably, this performance is close to that of gold based devices. In Chapter 5, preliminary results are provided on the laser annealing of hybrid perovskite films to further advance their scalable manufacturing. All layers of HPSCs require thermal annealing at temperature over 150 C for about half an hour or longer. The time-consuming conventional thermal annealing complicates the fabrication process and is not suitable for continuous production. High temperature over150 C is also not compatible with flexible substrates such as PET. Laser annealing is a promising method for overcoming these issues. It has several other advantages including compatibility with continuous roll-to-roll printing, minimal influence on non-radiated surrounding area, and rapid processing. Laser annealing can be integrated with the electrospray process to realize the continuous fabrication of hybrid perovskite film. Rapid laser annealing process with optimized power density and scanning pattern is demonstrated here for annealing perovskite films. The resulting hybrid perovskite film is highly-crystalline and pin-hole free, similar to that obtained from conventional thermal annealing. / Doctor of Philosophy / Hybrid perovskite solar cell (HPSC) is a promising low-cost and high efficiency photovoltaic technology. One of the big challenges for it to be commercially competitive is scalable fabrication method. This dissertation focuses on developing electrospray printing technology for HPSCs. This is a scalable method with high material usage rate that naturally lead to large scale fabrication of HPSCs. Electrospray printing parameter space was systematically studied and optimized to synthesize high-quality perovskite films and other functional layers including hole transport layer and electron transport layer. All electrospray printed high-efficiency perovskite solar cell devices were successfully demonstrated under the ambient condition and low temperature. Another achievement of this thesis is the electrospray printing of carbon film to replace the costly gold electrode in perovskite solar cells. Laser annealing technique is demonstrated for HPSCs, which is compatible with continuous fabrication and integrates easily with electrospray printing.

Organic Hole Transport Materials for Solid-State Dye-Sensitized and Perovskite Solar Cells

Solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (ssDSSCs) and recently developed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted a great attention in the scientific field of photovoltaics due to their low cost, absence of solvent, simple fabrication and promising power conversion efficiency (PCE). In these types of solar cell, the dye molecule or the perovskite can harvest the light on the basis of electron excitation. Afterwards, the electron and hole are collected at the charge transport materials. Photoelectrochemical polymerization (PEP) is employed in this thesis to synthesize conducting polymer hole transport materials (HTMs) for ssDSSCs. We have for the first time developed aqueous PEP in comparison with the conventional organic PEP with acetonitrile as solvent. This water-based PEP could potentially provide a low-cost, environmental-friendly method for efficient deposition of polymer HTM for ssDSSCs. In addition, new and simple precursors have been tested with PEP method. The effects of dye molecules on the PEP were also systematically studied, and we found that (a) the bulky structure of dye is of key importance for blocking the interfacial charge recombination; and (b) the matching of the energy levels between the dye and the precursor plays a key role in determining the kinetics of the PEP process. In PSCs, the HTM layer is crucial for efficient charge collection and its long term stability. We have studied different series of new molecular HTMs in order to understand fundamentally the influence of alkyl chains, molecular energy levels, and molecular geometry of the HTM on the photovoltaic performance. We have identified several important factors of the HTMs for efficient PSCs, including high uniformity of the HTM capping layer, perovskite-HTM energy level matching, good HTM solubility, and high conductivity. These factors affect interfacial hole injection, hole transport, and charge recombination in PSCs. By systematical optimization, a promising PCE of 19.8% has been achieved by employing a new HTM H11. We believe that this work could provide important guidance for the future development of new and efficient HTMs for PSCs.

The Studies of Fullerenes and Metallofullerenes in Geometry, Electron Transfer, Chromatography and Characterization

Since their discovery, fullerenes and metallofullerenes have been investigated regarding their structures, synthesis, isolations, and applications. The highly symmetric structures of fullerenes and metallofullerenes lead to extraordinary physical properties, such as electron transfers, and attract major attention from the science community. It has been well established that the stabilities of fullerenes and metallofullerenes can be estimated by recognizing structural patterns. Recently, we developed a generalized spiral program and additional codes and believe they are useful for fullerene/metallofullerene researchers. The higher fullerenes, those with more than 90 carbon atoms, also follow certain structural patterns. In our studies, we have shown that the higher fullerenes with tubular structures are stable in thermodynamics and can survive the aminopropanol reaction, but other spherical fullerenes cannot. For the past three decades, great efforts have been devoted to applying fullerenes and metallofullerenes as electronic materials. In our studies, we find the ground state electron transfer properties endow metallofullerenes as an ideal material for perovskite solar cells to enhance the stabilities. It has been shown in our investigations that common metallofullerenes, such as Sc3N@C80, are capable to be as the electron transfer layers in perovskite solar cells, and the test demonstrates that our novel perovskite solar cells may achieve high stability and high efficiency. The electron transfer abilities of metallofullerenes are studied with the M2@C79N since electron densities located in between the two metal atoms convert between a single electron bond and a double electron bond. The huge spherical electron delocalized structures of fullerenes and metallofullerenes lead to strong interactions with other delocalized systems, such as graphene. Previous studies have shown that graphene has a unique ability in molecular adsorptions. However, the graphene surface is not always flat and the rippled areas have effects on the packing styles. Therefore, we examined the behavior of fullerenes on the rippled graphene surface and then compared with another flat molecule, PTCDA. The results show that the effect of rippled areas varies due to molecular structures. This study gives instructions for electronic device manufacturing using graphene and fullerenes. In our studies, polarizability is a key factor of fullerenes and metallofullerenes. It has been shown that the chromatographic retention behavior has a strong relationship with the average polarizability of a molecule. Based on the experimental data, we built a model for the prediction of chromatographic retention times using computational polarizabilities. After that, we validated the model by two series of chromatographic data. The characterization of carbon-based materials has been long investigated. In the last chapter, we introduce a dynamic nuclear polarization-based method to characterize the structures of chars and studied the adsorption of oxygen on the activated radical sites. Overall, the dissertation reports my Ph. D. studies in the areas including theoretical studies of fullerene geometries, chromatographic models, applications and also experimental studies of the applications of fullerenes/metallofullerenes and characterization. / Doctor of Philosophy / Fullerenes and metallofullerenes are important materials for engineering and science. In general, a fullerene cage contains only carbon atoms and has a closed spherical structure. Theoretically, for a given number of carbon atoms, there are thousands of different ways to assemble a fullerene structure, just like assembling Lego. However, just a limited number of fullerene molecules have been discovered. In the past four decades, several theories have been proposed to explain the fact. For example, an isolated pentagon rule shows that the fullerene structures should not have any conjugated pentagons, which will decrease the stabilities of fullerene molecules. In this dissertation, I would like to show our results, which demonstrate fullerenes that can be synthesized follow certain patterns. We apply experimental and theoretical methods to discover the patterns and explain the reason. The application of fullerenes/metallofullerenes is another hot topic. We consider the structures of fullerenes endow them extraordinary abilities of electron transfers. Therefore, we use metallofullerenes as electron transfer material in a solar cell, and we have a good solar cell with high efficiency. We also inspect the interactions between fullerenes and rippled graphene surface. The results are also extended to understand the chromatographic behavior of fullerenes. By considering the physical properties of fullerenes, we build up simple models to simulate the chromatographic retention behaviors of fullerene inside the chromatographic column. The characterization of carbon-based material is a big challenge and in this dissertation, we demonstrate our contributions of a novel method for characterization, which can detect activated carbons.

The Master‘s thesis deals with the topic of perovskite solar cells with the main focus on the materials used for the active layer. In the introductory part, the electrical and optical properties of halide perovskites are described and specific examples of perovskite crystals are introduced. The description of impedance and photoimpedance measurement methods used for characterization of perovskite solar cells is also included in the thesis. The measurement of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was conducted on four perovskite crystals and equivalent circuit was formed to fit the obtained data. Parameters of the circuit elements were acquired using the fitting method and were further evaluated in experimental part of this thesis.

The diploma thesis deals with the study of perovskite solar cells with a regular n-i-p architecture. The theoretical part of this work is mainly focused on the stability of perovskite solar cells, i.e. thermal stability and the influence of UV radiation on final perovskite solar cell stability. Furthermore, the deposition methods, the architecture of solar cells and the materials used for the preparation of electron and hole transport layers were described in more detail. The experimental part deals with the optimization of the preparation of perovskite solar cells (especially in terms of resulting photovoltaic conversion efficiency), with a description of the structure preparation process of the final photovoltaic cell and the interpretation of the measured results.
