No. of bitstreams: 2 Tese_Antonio Arguinovis Agudelo Rondón.pdf: 8498751 bytes, checksum: 3170233ed37ff01fb1b3d3706335f8ad (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-05-29 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The Neotropical subfamily, Photininae Giglio-Tos, 1915, according to the current classification is divided into 2 tribes, 13 genera and 59 species. This along with 18 other subfamilies composes Mantidae. According to recent studies, most of these subfamilies are unnaturally formed and grouped mainly by morphological criteria that appear to be homoplasies that may be a result of convergent evolution. The lack of objective criteria for the designation of Photininae as a group that shares an evolutionary history created the need to deepen a phylogenetic study that supports the hypothesis that there exists a relationship between the genera. These data were acquired from 76 species. Of those 29 belonged to Photininae and 39 to other Neotropical families and 8 representatives of Mantidae from various biogeographical regions. Data for 13 genera of Photininae were recovered, of which 11 were analyzed with complete data sets. The data were selected from morphological structures that have been used for differential taxonomic diagnosis, mainly the head, raptorial legs and external genitalia, as well as nucleotide sequences from the COI, 16S, 18S and 28S genes. A total of 61 morphological, 2 ethological and 2111 molecular characters were analyzed under three different phylogenetic criteria: Parsimony, maximum likelihood, and bayesian inference. Photininae was found to be paraphyletic, mainly because of the distant positions of its tribes that do not share a common ancestor. These tribes, however, were often recovered as monophyletic. A classification by sequencing the largest lineage that includes Photininae groups and their close neighbors is proposed based on the consensus topology found through Bayesian analysis. This branch, which frequently appears in the analysis with strong support, consists of the superfamilies: Angeloidae n. stat., Coptopterygoidae n. stat., e Acanthopoidae n. stat. The first with a only family Angelidae n. stat.; the second aqually with a only family Coptopterigidae n. stat., the third with three: Photinidae n. stat., Liturgusidae, Acanthopidae. Within Photinidae n. stat., the following classification of subfamilies was proposed: Macromantinae n. stat., Orthoderellinae n. stat. and Photininae. Three lineages were found within Photininae, which are proposed as the tribes: Microphotinini n. trib., Photinini, Cardiopterini n. stat. The last tribe with two subtribes: Cardiopterina n. stat. and Photiomantina n. subtrib. The representatives from the Neotropical genera of Thespidae were found to be monophyletic. The family Stenophyllidae n. stat., was proposed as it was found to be a sister group to the current superfamily Mantoidae. Within Mantoidae, the subfamily Choeradodinae was positioned distant in relation to the other neotropical subfamilies, Stagmomantinae, Stagmatopterinae and Vatinae. These three subfamilies were frequently found and in a well-supported manner to be a Neotropical lineage of Mantoidae, such that it was proposed to group them together in Vatidae. The families Angelidae n. stat., Liturgusidae and Vatidae were proposed to contain only neotropical genera. For non-Neotropical genera related to these groups, the following nomenclature changes are proposed according to the current classification: For those that were included in Liturgusidae: family Dactylopterigidae Giglio-Tos, 1915 n. stat., (Dactilopteriginae n. stat.), family Gonatistellidae Giglio-Tos, 1915 n. stat., (Gonatistellinae n. stat.), family Humbertiellidae Brunner de W., 1893 n. stat., (Humbertiellinae n. stat.); for those included in Angelinae subfamily: Euchomenellinae Giglio-Tos, 1916 n. stat. (Euchomenellini n. stat., Leptocolini Giglio-Tos, 1916 n. stat.) (Mantidae) and subfamilies Heterochaetinae n. stat. (Heterochaetini); and for those included in Vatinae: Danuriinae n. stat. (Danuriini) (Mantidae). A dichotomous key for neotropical families is presented according to the classification proposal which is supplemented by the Photinidae genera. The diagnosis of Acanthopoidea n. stat., its superfamilies and families as well as a diagnosis of the Photinidae n. stat., genera were presented. The Taxonomy of Paraphotina Giglio-Tos, 1915 is reviewed. Paraphotina contain four species currently known: P. caatingaensis (Menezes & Bravo, 2013) n. comb., P. insolita (Rehn, 1941), P. ocidentalis Lombardo, 1998 and P. reticulata (Saussure, 1871). Paraphotina venezuelana Beier, 1963 is a new synonym of P. insolita. Keys for the Paraphotina species are proposed. The present study reports intersexuality in the holotype of Photina gracilis Giglio-Tos, 1915 as a possible consequence of nematomorph parasitism, which required the detailed re-evaluation of its taxonomic status. No entanto, as tribos frequentemente resultaram.
