Life in the Pits: A Trumpeter’s Life in New York’s Musical Theater

Nason, Ryan 06 September 2018 (has links)
Pit musicians have fallen through the cracks of musical theater scholarship. In all my research, I have yet to come across any sources that thoroughly examine musical theater from the perspective of the musicians who perform in its orchestras day in and day out. Thus, this thesis documents Richard (Dick) R. Smith's life as a professional musician living and working--in vaudeville and on Broadway--in midcentury New York City. Smith might be relatively unknown, but he played a significant role in a variety of musical contexts. By understanding his life, we gain valuable insight into histories that have only focused on the experiences and achievements of actors, bandleaders, composers, orchestrators, and conductors, among others. Examining Smith's experiences also help us understand something about the hundreds, if not thousands, of similarly anonymous pit musicians whose talents and hard work made New York City's vibrant musical life possible.

Reducing Door-to-Provider Times by Using Nurse Practitioners in Triage

Anderson, Megan Lynnell 01 January 2019 (has links)
Increased patient wait times it the emergency department (ED) have been linked to poor patient outcomes and adverse health care events. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine if placing a nurse practitioner (NP) in the triage area would reduce door-to-provider times and improve patient throughput within the ED. The primary question for this quality improvement project was whether the use of NPs in the triage area would improve patient throughput and decrease wait times in the ED. A secondary question identified was if implementing an NP in the triage area would decrease patient length of stay in the ED. Rogers's diffusion of innovations model was used as a theoretical framework for the project. To evaluate the improvement in patient throughput in the ED, data were gathered for 12 months prior to and 12 months after the placement of an NP in the triage area. Data collection included door-to-provider times and door-to-discharge times. Analysis of the data using independent t tests showed no statistically significant reduction in door-to-provider times (p = .278) or overall lengths of stay in the ED (p = .235). There was an overall reduction in door-to-provider times of 11% and a 5% reduction in door-to-discharge times during the intervention. The implications of this project for social change include evidence that NPs are beneficial to the ED when used in the triage area. Based on the findings of this quality improvement project, it is recommended that an NP be placed in the triage area to decrease door-to-provider and door-to-discharge times, and to continue to improve the culture of the ED team to promote the use of NPs within the ED.

Geotechnical strategy and tactics at Anglo Platinum's PPRust open pit operation, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Little, Megan Jane 10 October 2007 (has links)
Over the last four years Potgietersrust Platinums (PPRust) has successfully implemented new geotechnical strategy and tactics to reduce risk, improving safety but also maximising profitability. A large database of core logging, face mapping and rock testing has been assembled and used in the slope design process. The data has also been used for optimising blast designs on a daily basis through the use of a geotechnical block model. This greatly improves blast fragmentation and therefore loading and milling efficiencies. Slope management includes a limit blasting programme, daily visual inspections, and state-of-the-art slope monitoring equipment, namely GroundProbe radar, Riegl lasers and GeoMoS automated prism monitoring. Slope optimisation incorporates all the field data, operational controls, cost of failure, full economic analysis of various slope angles and fault tree analysis. Savings on waste stripping of hundreds of millions of Rands were gained from the optimisation as slope angles could be increased due to improved geotechnical knowledge and management. PPRust’s geotechnical work is considered the benchmark for Anglo American open pit operations.

Solution Pits

Bell, John Robert 04 1900 (has links)
Littoral solution pits were studied along 4 shorelines in the Guelph and Amabel Formations of the Bruce Peninsula. Pit depths, diameters, and densities were measured at several elevations above and below water, and various distances from the shoreline. Differences in pit characteristics were related to differences in shoreline energies, lithologies, and fluctuating lake levels in the post glacial period. Pit depths above water are shallower than pit depths below water. This conclusion supports previous hypotheses proposed by Cowell (1976) and Ford (in Goodchild, 1984) that the depth of solution pits increase with increasing water depth. The conclusions also indicate that pits are initiated above water, and that solutional deepening of pits can occur underwater. / Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)
