The Decay of Romanticism in the Poetry of Thomas Hardy

Wartes, Carolynn L. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the concept of a godless universe governed by a consciousless and conscienceless Immanent Will in Hardy's poetry is an ineluctable outcome, given the expanded scientific knowledge of the nineteenth century, of the pantheistic views of the English Romantic poets. The purpose is accomplished by tracing characteristically Romantic attitudes through the representative poetry of the early Victorian period and in Hardy's poetry. The first chapter is a brief introduction. Chapter II surveys major Romantic themes, illustrating them in Wordsworth's poetry. Chapter III treats the decline of the Romantic vision in the poetry of Tennyson and Arnold. Hardy's views and the Victorian poets' influence are the subject of Chapter IV. Chapter V demonstrates Wordsworth's influence on Hardy in several areas.

Hudba v literární tvorbě vybraných českých humanistů 16. století / Music in the Literary Works of Selected Czech Humanists of 16th Century

Pacala, Frederik January 2018 (has links)
This thesis deals with the musical allusions in the literary works of Czech humanists of 16th century. The author presents the current applications of these sources in Czech musical historiography. Further attention is focused on the representatives of the humanist culture in the Czech lands, the possibilities of their connection with the musical culture and on the effort to point out their mutual ties and contacts. The second part of the thesis is focused on two specific personalities - Georgius Handschius and Jakub Srnovec - whose works illustrate the possibilities of deepening the use of this type of sources in musical-historiographical research. Swift in his Poetry

Kerbaugh, Jim Lawrence 08 1900 (has links)
Swift appears in many of his poems either in his o person or behind a poetic mask which does little to conceal his identity. The poems contain Swift's view of his own character. Even in the poems addressed to others, the most important subject is Swift himself. This study is divided into chapters which examine the various roles Swift assumed in both his private and public lives. Following a brief introduction are two chapters of more interest than significance. The first of these is concerned with poems on Swift as a houseguest. These poems frequently relate the difficulties Swift's eccentric behavior caused his hosts. The second deals with poems on Swift's relationships with friends such as Thomas Sheridan and Patrick Delany, as well as with a public adversary, Jonathan Smedley.

Milne, Sarah Elizabeth January 1967 (has links)
