We detach the profile epidemiological of the illness in the country, its demands in relation to the contamination and the insertion of the Social Service. Contextalive and configures the practical professional in the universe of the Units of Health of the city, that directly act with Program DST/HIV/AIDS giving emphasis to the daily action of the professional, having as intervention support, the technique of the advisement, instrumental operating essential for the development of the prevention actions, diagnosis and treatment in the Program in all country. / Trata-se de um estudo sobre a prática do Assistente Social, nos Programas de DST/HIV/AIDS no município de São Luís, tendo como referência uma análise da epidemia da AIDS como problema de âmbito mundial, as particularidades da epidemia no Brasil, bem como a construção da política nacional e seus desdobramentos no Maranhão, particularmente em São Luís. Destacamos o perfil epidemiológico da doença no país, suas demandas atuais em relação à contaminação e a inserção do Serviço Social. Contextualiza e configura a prática profissional no universo das unidades de Saúde do município, que atuam diretamente com o Programa DST/HIV/AIDS dando ênfase à ação diária do profissional, tendo como base de intervenção, a técnica do aconselhamento, instrumental operativo, primordial para o desenvolvimento das ações de prevenção, diagnóstico e tratamento no programa em todo o país.
