This dissertation provides a quantitative analysis of cultural ecology and social structure in a rural parish in Northwest Portugal. There is greater economic inequality, and greater social stratification than most ethnographers of Iberia have described. Chapter 1 introduces some of the material indications of wealth and land inequality in the community. Some households are shown to have much more land and dairy cattle than others. Chapter 2 discusses nickname behavior as a set of socio-cultural symbols for expressing an ideal of equality, which in some sense runs counter to material differences within the community. Chapter 3 analyses contemporary farming systems; showing that having different amounts of land determines each household's choice of technology. Each household operates its farm in a unique natural and economic environment, because of different access to the factors of production, especially land, but including labor and capital. Chapter 4 shows that patterns of technical change also depend on land supply. Larger farmers are the first to adopt new innovations, especially labor-saving devices. Chapter 5 demonstrates that, counter to common assumptions, land fragmentation is more pronounced on large farms than on smaller farms, but that for no farms is land fragmentation a barrier to agricultural production. Chapter 6 is a brief history of recent changes of land use. It shows that the most common land-use types, fields and forests, are somewhat interchangeable. Fields are converted to forest, and forest to field, depending on the economic environment of the owning household, and the natural environment of the land itself. Ecologically marginal land that is owned by large farmers is the most likely to be changed from field to forest, or from forest to field.

Este trabalho investigação e reflexão crítica surgiu do nosso interesse pelo estudo e divulgação da “Literatura de Cordel” enquanto reflexo das transformações culturais da sociedade, sobretudo no domínio da moda, observando-as à luz de critérios vulgarizados no “Século das Luzes”. Assim, propusemo-nos esboçar um breve e sintético panorama estético geral da evolução ideo-mental das sociedades ocidentais, para, a partir dele, gradativamente, tentarmos lançar luz sobre o palco das modas em Portugal, por cujas ruas e caminhos, se encontravam “volanteiros”, vendendo os tais folhetos de cordel, entre os quais figuravam as mais interessantes críticas e visões acerca da moda. Sendo evidente o valor de tais documentos, apresentamos em anexo uma modesta antologia para edição, esperando incentivar a novos investimentos de estudo, nesta área, que tão rica e tão pouco abordada.

A presente dissertação tem como objecto de estudo a representação na pintura a óleo de três rainhas do Antigo Regime, D. Maria Ana de Áustria (1683- 1754), D. Mariana Vitória de Bourbon (1718-1781) e D. Maria I (1734-1816). Embora nas figuras observadas se verifique uma evolução no que respeita a adornos, jóias e trajes, existe repetição no esquema de representação, mais precisamente no que respeita à pose, à posição da figura e aos signos régios que a acompanham. As nossas fontes primárias são obras de autores de artistas de várias nacionalidades, incluindo a portuguesa. Foram estudadas utilizando varias fontes secundárias, incluindo pinturas dos mesmos e de outros autores, o que nos permitiu obter informação mais detalhada sobre as primeiras.

Em Portugal, a organização da luta anti-cancerosa acompanhou de uma forma muito próxima o movimento global do primeiro quartel do século XX, ultrapassando alguns países europeus no tocante à planificação e concretização de um projecto que se revelou fundamental na vida médica e científica nacional. Nos anos 20 e 30, o risco posto pela doença acompanhou a transformação profunda do lugar ocupado pela medicina nos domínios da saúde pública, bem como do seu novo papel no seio de uma sociedade que se queria moldada sob o signo da modernidade. Emergiu então um movimento anticanceroso a partir de uma faixa de médicos ligada ao mundo académico, que gravitavam em redor das cúpulas políticas da época. Inserida entre uma especialidade em processo de afirmação e as necessidades assistenciais dos cancerosos, a luta portuguesa contra o cancro resultou da conjugação de uma série de factores que ultrapassam a mera assimilação de novas tecnologias médicas ou até da criação de um espaço próprio para a prática da oncologia. Tornou-se sobretudo num meio para realizar um trabalho intenso de educação para a saúde das populações, num instrumento de ponta na formação médica especializada e numa referência de modernidade científica no contexto do Estado Novo.

Tendo em vista a centralidade e a importância dos impressos nessa centúria, esta investigação teve por objetivo analisar a revista “A Illustração Luso-brazileira”, tomada aqui como objeto de pesquisa e fonte para pensarmos o nacionalismo português. A partir da referida proposta buscamos entender a atuação dessa publicação como protagonista histórica e difusora de um discurso nacionalista na conjuntura de início da Regeneração em Portugal (1851). Refletimos ainda sobre os possíveis propósitos por trás das publicações luso-brasileiras, haja vista o fato de, apesar do título sugestivo, elas falarem pouco da nação brasileira. Outra questão abordada referiu-se às contribuições da revista para o debate acerca da questão ibérica, tema polêmico que ganhou fôlego nas discussões entre os intelectuais do período. Do mesmo modo, tratamos da contribuição do semanário na difusão de um pensamento que buscava a formação da identidade nacional lusa, em reação ao nacionalismo ibérico, propalado por alguns escritores. Trata-se de um momento privilegiado para se pensar esses temas, já que a publicação tem, como pano de fundo, o contexto do romantismo e a querela sobre a união, ou não, de Portugal com a Espanha. / The nineteenth century witnessed a great development in the production of periodical press. Given the centrality and importance of press in this century, those research aims to analyze the magazine “A Illustração Luso-brazileira”, taking it here as a research object and source to think the Portuguese nationalism. From this proposal we intend to understand the performance of this publication as historical protagonist and diffusing of a nationalist discourse in early juncture of regeneration in Portugal (1851). We reflect further on the possible purpose behind the Luso-Brazilian publications, given the fact that, despite the suggestive title, they speak little of the Brazilian nation. Another issue addressed referred to the review of contributions to the debate on the Iberian issue, a controversial issue and gained momentum in the discussions between the intellectuals of the period. Likewise, we deal with the weekly contribution in spreading a thought seeking the formation of the national Portuguese identity in reaction to the Iberian nationalism, heralded by some writers. It is a privileged moment to think about these issues, since the publication has, as a backdrop, the romantic context and quarrel about unity, or not, of Portugal with Spain. / FAPESP: 2013/14940-5

Music journalism has been acknowledged as an important space of mediation between artists and consumers. Journalists and critics have played an historical role in the creation of discourse on popular music and are acknowledged by the music industry as an important referent in promotion strategies. Research on the subject has been mostly focused either on the relationship between music journalism and the wider music industry in which it operates or on its status as a field of cultural production. Little consideration has been given to the role played by music journalists in articulating popular music with wider political, social and cultural concerns. This thesis will examine the case-study of Portuguese popular music journalism. It will address its historical evolution and current status by taking into consideration some dimensions, namely, the wider institutional contexts that frame the status of music journalism and how they work upon it, the ideologies and values realised in journalistic discourse, the journalists’ relationship to the music industry (as represented by record labels/companies and concert promotion companies) and issues of interactivity with readers. The thesis will draw on theories of the public sphere and, to a lesser extent, on Bourdieu’s notions of field, capital and habitus to assess the possibilities for music journalism to create reasoned discourse on popular music and, therefore, contribute to wider debates on the public sphere of culture.
